After a successful 2015, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien was voted Athlete of the Year at a ceremony in Hanoi on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old swimmer from the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho topped the list of 10 best athletes of the year 2015 with 1,031 points, based on votes from sports journalists across the country.

At the 28th Southeast Asian Games in June in Singapore, Vien won eight gold, one silver and one bronze medals and broke eight regional records.

She also became the first Vietnamese swimmer to win World Cup medals.

Vien bagged a bronze medal at the women’s 400m individual medley in Paris on August 16, her third medal at the 2015 International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup series.

Earlier, she had won a silver in women’s 400m individual medley and a bronze in 200m individual medley at the event’s Moscow stop.

Her coach Dang Anh Tuan said he has never seen any athlete with a strong will like her.

Last year, Vien also won seven gold medals and five silver medals at Southeast Asian Age Group Swimming Championships.

She also set a new record in women’s 200m medley at the Military World Games in South Korea in October.

Playing for the Military Club, Vien became the youngest Vietnamese to be promoted to the rank of captain. She will compete at the Olympics in Rio this August.

The runner-up in the list was Nguyen Thi Huyen with 619 points. The 23-year-old track and field athlete from Nam Dinh Province won three gold medals at the 28th SEA Games in Singapore and broke two records.

She also won two gold medals at the Grand Prix Track and Field Championships.

Ly Hoang Nam, a 19-year-old tennis player, ranked third. The top 10 also includes gymnast Phan Thi Ha Thanh, weightlifters Thach Kim Tuan and Vuong Thi Huyen, shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh, gymnast Dinh Phuong Thanh, and chess player Le Quang Liem.
