Vietnam, Czech Republic reflect on past, look to future

<p>The traditional political and economic ties and future cooperation prospects between Vietnam and the Czech Republic were under review at a conference held in Prague on April 20.</p>
<p>The conference, titled ‘Vietnam, its glorious history and development prospects in international integration’, was organised by the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament in collaboration with the Vietnamese Embassy in the Central Europe country on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the liberation of southern Vietnam and national reunification.</p>
<p>Delivering a report titled ‘Vietnam in 30 years of reform’, Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations Hoang Binh Quan underscored the great and historic achievements in building and protecting socialist Vietnam.</p>
<p>With the ‘Traditional friendship relationship between Vietnam and the Czech Republic over the past 65 years and great future prospects’ report, Vietnamese Ambassador Truong Manh Son highlighted landmarks in the friendship between the two countries and measures to boost cooperation in investment, education and training, culture, sports and tourism, transport and science and technology.</p>
<p>The ambassador called on the Czech Republic to invest in Vietnam in advantageous fields such as energy, telecommunications, public transport, machinery and equipment, crystal glass and production for export.</p>
<p>He urged the central European country to streamline visa procedures for Vietnamese enterprises to conduct business in the country.</p>
<p>During the Year of Vietnamese Culture in the Czech Republic in 2015, a number of activities will be held including conferences, business forums and photos exhibitions as well as exchanges in culture, sports, economy and investment.</p>
<p>Vojtech Filip, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament, said that both Vietnam and the Czech Republic have respected and effectively implemented signed agreements.</p>
<p>Many reports at the conference focused on the traditional friendship and cooperation, and the active role of the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic.-VNA</p>

Youth strike gongs to preserve their culture

<p>Youths from many villages in Yang Bac Commune, Dak Po District in Gia Lai Province, are raising funds to preserve and promote gong culture.</p>
<p>In each village, the People’s Committee lends farm land to each groups of youths to grow crops and raise cattle. The profits are mostly earmarked for buying new gongs for their communities.</p>
<p>In Jung Village, for example, youths exchanged two buffaloes, VND20 million (US$940), for a set of gongs. Similarly, nearby Bung Bang, Kroi and Jro Dong Villages all have their own set of gongs, which are worth up to million dong each.</p>
<p>“We have loved the sound of gongs since we were still in our mothers’ wombs. Playing gongs is also the major cultural activity of local youth during festivals. All the youth in my village are able to play gongs. Each commune consists of 15 villages, each of which has established its own gong group,” said Dinh-DRap, secretary of the Youth Union in Yang Bac Village.</p>

<p>Truong Trung Tuyen, secretary of Youth Union in Dak Po Village added: “Gongs are not only a musical instrument, but a means of communication and valuable family heirlooms. The idea therefore should be expanded widely in Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands).”</p>
<p>Gong culture has already been recognised as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and listed as national-intangible heritage by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.</p>
<p>It is also considered part of the spiritual life of ethnic people in the Central Highlands, so its preservation is of great importance.</p>
<p>According to Professor Tran Van Khe, a cultural and musical researcher of traditional Vietnamese music, youth play a key role in preserving gong music.</p>
<p>A gong festival is held every four years in the province and every two years in Gia Lai District. These are the effective ways of passing on knowledge.</p>
<p>Gia Lai Cultural-Arts Vocational School and boarding schools in the province are introducing gong culture into their curriculum.</p>
<p>According to recent statistics, there are 5,655 sets of gongs, of which 932 are considered precious. All are kept in the province.</p>

<p>NDO – Unique traditional cultural activities practiced by ethnic groups will be featured at the Vietnam National Villages for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in Hanoi from April 28 to May 3.</p>
<p>The festive days, held to celebrate the Southern Liberation and National Reunification Day (April 30), will see the participation of Mong, Tay, Nung, Muong, Thai and Dao groups from the northern mountainous provinces of Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Hoa Binh, Son La, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan and Hanoi’s Ba Vi district.</p>
<p>Visitors will be amused with the groups’ folk games such as swing, <em>con</em> (a ball made from colourful fabric pieces covering a handful of rice and cotton seeds) throwing, stick pushing, folklore songs, dances, and a goat fighting competition of Ha Giang province’s Mong ethnic group.</p>
<p>A 30-booth rural market displaying indigenous products and dishes of the localities and a photo exhibition introducing cultural life, daily activities, customs and people in the northeast and northwest regions, are also being organised.</p>

Activities mark 40th anniversary of national reunification

<p>(VOVworld) – Construction of the Nguyen Huu Canh temple began in Ho Chi Minh city on Monday as part of activities to mark the 40<sup>th</sup> anniversary of Southern Liberation and National Reunification. The temple will be built on a 7,400-square-meter area inside the Park of Ethnic Culture and History to pay tribute to Nguyen Huu Canh,who established Vietnam’s territorial sovereignty in Saigon and the Gia Định region in 1698, now Ho Chi Minh city.</p>

<p>An art festival featuring Vietnam’s heroic traditions concluded on Monday in the central province of Quang Tri. 19 art troupes brought to the festival 100 expertly-choreographed performances. Organizers presented 25 gold medals for the best performances.</p>

<p>The Vietnam National Museum of History in Hanoi has held a discussion between young police officers, commandoes, soldiers, and 2 historical eyewitnesses. They were lieutenant general Duong Cong Suu and sergeant Ngo Sy Nguyen, who were the artillerymen in the first tank to ram the main gates of the Independence Palace on April 30<sup>th</sup>, 1975.</p>

<p>Hundreds of book lovers, especially youths have visited the four-day event to buy books and join numerous activities, including exhibitions of good and rare historical books, foreign books, old books’ swap, exchanges with writers and bookshelves for workers.</p>
<p>A regular book street titled “Pho sach Sai Gon – TPHCM” (Saigon – HCMC Book Street) will be discussed as part of the event. Previously, Prof. Quach Thu Nguyet, former director of Tre (Youth) Publishing House, proposed organizing a regular book street to create a venue for local intellectuals and book lovers on her Facebook page.</p>
<p>The venue for the cultural event on Nguyen Van Binh Street in District 1 has got good feedback from the public as well as local media since it was suggested by Prof. Nguyet. A project on the activities of the book street will be put forward for public comments.</p>

<p>You are invited to the art exhibition There Is No Box with new oil paintings by the Vietnamese artist Bui Thanh Tam.</p>
<p>Bui Thanh Tam in his paintings explores contemporary society from different angles. Vietnam is a conservative society as in most of Southeast Asia, and changing rapidly. The women in his paintings often serve as symbols and may be viewed as having non-traditional Vietnamese values. The artist questions the role of women in Vietnam’s society, the development of its contemporary society and also how the current society can be seen as chaotic, especially for its youth.</p>
<p>The artist says: “This series of paintings was created when Vietnam is in a transitional stage. The halfhearted communist regime is on its path to change and integrate into the wider world. This sudden change without orientation makes the human psyche overwhelmed, confused and disoriented. The result is that society often develops conflicts between parts of the Vietnamese culture that are Eastern and parts that have Western influences”.</p>
<p>Bui Thanh Tam is 36 years old and one of Vietnam’s most important young and upcoming artists. He graduated from the Hanoi Institute of Fine Art in 2009 and has taken part in international exhibitions in Hong Kong, Netherlands, Malaysia, and China as well as in Vietnam. This is his first exhibition in Thailand.</p>

Two Colombian contemporary artists have been chosen from a national call across Colombia, to spend at one month in Ho Chi Minh City in 2014 and 2015. This program understands that to enable artistic exchange via the creation of new work, there must be stimulated dialog between cultures and producers to expand the horizon of critical thinking. <p>DomDom-The Hub for experimental music in collaboration with L’Espace -Institut français- proudly present: Concert with PARALLEL ASTEROID and YOUNG MUSICIANS OF DOMDOM.</p>
<p>“Parallel Asteroid”: Two musicians, two styles, one vision. The duo combines experimental, acoustic sounds with free form improvisations. The musicians are Cao Thanh Lan originally from Hanoi, Vietnam at the piano, prepared piano, objects and Gregor Siedl from Austria on saxophone and Game Calls.</p>
<p>Cao Thanh Lan has a strong classical contemporary music background and Gregor Siedl is a jazz musician with roots in improvised and experimental music. Their common ground is free improvisation with vigorous use of extended techniques and new forms of expression. The duo is actively connected to the thriving music scenes of Vienna, Berlin, Cologne and Brussels.</p>
<p>This time Parallel Asteroid returns to Vietnam by the invitation of Domdom and the financial support of Austria Embassy. After the intensive workshop and practice sessions with young musicians of the advanced improvisation class of Domdom, the result of this adventurous project will be presented in a unique concert for the audience of Hanoi.</p>

<p>Cao Thanh Lan – the only Vietnamese pianist who is specialized in classical contemporary music (graduated from Cologne Conservatory Germany with Highest Distinction in the Master program of New Music). She participated in world famous festivals of contemporary music, amongst others Manifest at Ircam Paris, Klangspuren and Impuls in Austria, Strom Festival in Germany…</p>
<p>Gregor Siedl is an Austrian musician with a background in jazz music who is also an expert in using instrumental extended techniques. He has won several prizes at prestigious international jazz competitions and has released numerous recordings as well as performed in many festivals in Europe and in Asia.</p>
<p>The young composers of Domdom are from different music backgrounds. Some were trained in classical music, others studied Vietnamese traditional music, some others are self-taught musicians. The educational courses of Domdom encourage and enable them to absorb and integrate aesthetical concepts of experimental music as well as develop their skills and necessary knowledge in performing experimental music. They became and will become the positive creative forces of the experimental music scene of Vietnam.</p>

<p>This upcoming April 30th marks the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, also formally known in Vietnam as the Resistance War against America. On this occasion, I would like to invite you to a screening of two of my found footage films, both concern themselves with the war.</p>
<p>2010 saw my first found footage film, Song to the Front, re-edited from the 1973 titular feature production by the Vietnam Feature Film Studio. The piece is also the first realized work in my pending project Vietnamese Classics Re-Cut Series.</p>
<p>The second film, Vietnam the Movie, is finished just a bit earlier this year. In this work, I ponder the definition of a nation and its place on the world map by watching how characters in movies and popular media had referred to Vietnam during the past 50 years.</p>
<p>Vietnam the Movie surveys how the word “Vietnam” appeared internationally (usually as a war, a symbol, an ideology, a concept), particularly in the context of the Vietnam War, and also the legacy of the Indochina War. It looks into the ways popular media forms our collective imaginations, memories, and understandings of a war, a country, a nation.</p>
<p>Along the side of Hollywood classics such as Apocalypse Now, Born on the Fourth of July, The Deer Hunter, Forrest Gump, Full Metal Jacket, etc., the forty chosen sources that directly employ the word “Vietnam” also feature the lesser known or virtually forgotten works by Harun Farocki, Fassbinder, Herzog, Nagisa Oshima, and Ann Hui. In particular, the making of this film has granted me the opportunity to explore the political stance of Jean-Luc Godard whose films held the most mention of “Vietnam”, at least among those of the filmmakers surveyed.</p>
<p>My motivations in recycling found footage is to preserve, deconstruct, subvert different kinds of film and media’s aesthetics and language; to re-tell, re-think, re-read, re-engage with history.</p>

<p>The Department of Performing Arts has held a press briefing on it’s upcoming activities of 2015.</p>
<p>Accordingly, the department was assigned to organize art performances to celebrate great national festivals in 2015.</p>
<p>On the occasion of the 40<sup>th</sup> anniversary of the southern liberation and national unification (April 30<sup>th</sup>), the department will organize a special art performance on the night of April 28<sup>th</sup> in the Central province of Quang Tri.</p>
<p>On the occasion of the 125<sup>th</sup> anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s birth, the department will organize an art performance to open the Sen Village festival and cultural day of ethnic minority groups in the central region.</p>
<p>Two art performances will take place in the center square in northern Hung Yen province and Hung Yen provincial Cultural Center on June 29<sup>th</sup> and 30<sup>th</sup> to mark the 100<sup>th</sup> anniversary of late Party General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh’s birth (July 1<sup>st</sup>).</p>
<p>The Department will also preside over the organization of art performances to mark the 70<sup>th</sup> anniversary of National Independence Day (September 2<sup>nd</sup>) and the 250<sup>th</sup> anniversary of great poet Nguyen Du’s birth (November 25<sup>th</sup>).</p>
<p>In 2015, the department will also announce literature and art works on revolutionary war, build plans for art performances to mark the 12<sup>th</sup> National Party Congress, organize contest on professional arts and Vietnam-Lao-Cambodia Young Circus contest, a Water Puppetry festival and ASEAN traditional music festival with Vietnamese traditional music festival./.</p>

Danang Int’l Fireworks Competition to blast off

<p>(VOV) – The countdown is on until five prestigious pyrotechnic companies light up the Danang skies as part of the annual International Fireworks Competition.</p>
<p>Some of the world’s top pyrotechnic teams will compete for the much sought after competition title during five days of explosive action on April 29 to May 3.</p>
<p>Set for Danang City at the Han River Port, the stunning firework displays will be synchronised to music against the backdrop of the infamous Han River.</p>
<p>This year’s pyrotechnic companies firing at the event are Howard & Son Fireworks from Australia, Fireworks for Africa from South Africa, Pyrotecnico from the US, Surex Firma Rodzinna from Poland and the Danang City Team.</p>

<p>Danang has also planned a wide range of activities to coincide with the event such as bike races, concerts, art performances and is opening a large number of souvenir and food shops to cater to the event.</p>

<p>Quang Ngai Provincial People’s Committee has requested assistance from the State Government to recovery losses caused by recent unusual heavy rains in the province lasting from 24th to 27th March, 2015. </p>
<p>Particularly, the assistance includes 2,000 tons of rice for people in flooded areas, 200 tons of various seeds for the recovery of cultivation, and 79.5 billion for the fixing on as many as broken roads, irrigation systems, and so on.</p>
<p>According to the report of Quang Ngai province about damages caused by the heavy rains, as many as areas of agricultural production were almost flooded and aquaculture was seriously impacted.</p>
<p>The historical rains also caused serious landslides in mountainous zones, breaking many roads and irrigation construction works.</p>
<p>The total loss was calculated to be 160.5 billion dong.</p>

<p>A delegation from the department of propaganda and training of Ha Noi city Party Committee and representatives from more than 30 Central and Ha Noi press agencies on April 16 visited the Prime Minister Pham Van Dong Commemorative Area and Dang Thuy Tram Clinic. </p>
<p>Located in Duc Tan commune, Mo Duc district on an area of 02ha, Prime Minister Pham Van Dong Commemorative Area was inaugurated on September 01, 2008 including guests welcoming room, film projection room about the Late PM Pham Van Dong’s works and life, material display area, commemorative house where Late PM Pham Van Dong worked in 1936-1937.</p>
<p>The Commemorative Area has welcomed from 5,000 to 6,000 visitors per month.</p>
<p>Dang Thuy Tran Clinic was built in Pho Cuong commune, Duc Pho district and put into operation in 2016. Currently, the Clinic has 13 medical staffs.</p>
<p>At the two destinations, delegates were introduced about the lives and achievements during the wars of Late PM Pham Van Dong and Doctor Dang Thuy Tram.</p>
<p>At the same day, the delegation also visited and offered incense at Huynh Thuc Khang grave – a strong-willed patriotic scholar at Thien An mountain, Tinh An Dong commune, Son Tinh district, Quang Ngai province.</p>

Exhibition of rare animal rescued by WAR

<p><strong>A special exhibition was opened yesterday in Eo Xoai Eco-Tourism Park in Phu Quoc Island in the Mekong delta province of Kien Giang, displaying more than 40 photos of rare animals rescued by Wildlife at Risk Organization.</strong></p>
<p>The exhibition named “Lucky Wildlife” showed photos of rare animals such as leopards, golden-cheeked gibbons, gray-shanked douc langur, Indochinese lutung and Asian black bear which have been rescued by the Wildlife at Risk Organization (WAR).</p>
<p>More than 60 individual animals had been rescued from the hands of poachers and released back into the wild. Attached to each photo is a story of the fate of the animal and how rare they are.</p>
<p>Visitors are moved at the stories of fate of the animals and rescuing them as well as people feel happy at knowing that the animals were released to the wild or live peacefully in WAR-managed rescue stations afterwards.</p>
<p>Visitors are asked to pledge not to consume rare wildlife.</p>
<p>The exhibition will last to May 15, 2015.</p>
<p>The exhibition was opened by the Wildlife at Risk Organization (WAR) and Eo Xoai Eco-Tourism Park.</p>

<p>The event aims to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the South’s Liberation Day (April 30), Labor Day (May 1), and Uncle Ho’s 125th birth anniversary (May 19, 1890).</p>
<p>Movies include Nhung Dua Con Cua Lang (Children of the Village), Nhin Ra Bien Ca (Looking towards Sea), Duong xuyen rung (Journey across the forest), Tieng khen (The sound of Khen- a musical instrument used by the Mong ethnic minority), Dinh cao chien thang (The peak of victory).</p>
<p>They will be screened at National Cinema Center in Hanoi, Hung Dao Theater in Buon Ma Thuot City in the central highland province of Dak Lak, multi-function Film Center in the northern province of Nghe An and CineBox in Ho Chi Minh City.</p>
<p>The film week aims to honor glorious history and combats, promote patriotism and national pride in building and protecting the country.</p>
<p>The event is organized by the National Cinema Department in cooperation with local film studios.</p>

<p>After passing three rounds, eight best students among 1, 600 contestants from Le Hong Phong, Tran Dai Nghia, Nguyen Thuong Hien, Gia Dinh, Bui Thi Xuan and Vo Thi Sau were selected to enter the final round.</p>
<p>Accordingly, the first and second prize went to Nguyen Thi Thanh Thanh and Tran Anh Kiet from Le Hong Phong High school; the third prize belonged to Nguyen Cuong Quoc from Gia Dinh High school and the consolation prize went to Ton Nu Bao Tran from Vo Thi Sau High school.</p>
<p>In the final round, contestants had to pass general knowledge, face to face competition and presentation performance.</p>
<p>In the presentation performance, Nguyen Thi Thanh Thanh from Le Hong Phong High school won the first prize.</p>
<p>The annual contest was organized by the city’s Department of Education and Training and Yola Institute, aiming to provide an opportunity for students to enhance knowledge and develop English learning skill through TOEFL iBT tests.</p>

<p><strong>Book festival opens at National Library</strong></p>

<p>The 2015 Book Festival takes place at the National Library of Vietnam in Hanoi from April 18 to May 5 in response to Vietnam Book Day (April 21) and World Book and Copyright Day (April 23).</p>
<p>Held annually since 2006, the festival aims to honour authors and their work, encourage reading in the community, and increase public awareness of reading culture, author rights and the role of libraries.</p>
<p>Readers participating in the festival have a chance to meet and talk with authors and literary critics.</p>
<p>A book exhibition featuring the mixture of cultures will also be held to highlight the various cultures of ASEAN countries and others around the world.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, children can participate in a drawing contest or play games.</p>
<p>Within the framework of the festival, the National Library receives donated books to be distributed to libraries in-need across the country.</p>
<p>In response to Vietnam Book Day, book festivals were launched on April 18 in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.</p>
<p>Also the same day, a ceremony was held in Hanoi to present the 2014 Vietnam Book prize.</p>
<p>The organising board presented 75 prizes among 479 entries from 44 publishing houses nationwide.</p>
<p>The event, the 10th of its kind, is among activities celebrating Vietnam Book Day (April 21).</p>
<p><strong>Dancenter to hold annual show</strong></p>
<p>The international dance training school Dancenter will stage a show called Celebration featuring 200 dancers at the Youth Cultural House in early June.</p>
<p>“The show Celebration is how we show our appreciation and joy for what life has given us. People around the world celebrate what they enjoy, are thankful for, and believe in,” a Dancenter press release says.</p>
<p>Dancenter calls their show a true “theatrical experience”, with the best of music, expressive costumes and lighting design, and passionate performers who excel in dance styles from ballet to breakdance. Each of the performances will tell a story of a celebration taking place somewhere in the universe.</p>
<p>The eighth edition of Dancenter’s annual show is dedicated to audiences, who have given the school support over the years.</p>
<p>The school says they hope to see audiences all up on their feet cheering, dancing, and filling the theatre with happiness and energy.</p>

<p><strong>Exhibition marks 150 years of press</strong></p>
<p>An exhibition on old Vietnamese publications will take place in Ha Noi today to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of the Vietnamese language press.</p>
<p>The event will explain the start and development of the Vietnamese press since the publication of Gia Dinh, the first Vietnamese newspaper, in Sai Gon on April 15, 1865.</p>
<p>Popular newspapers and magazines printed between 1865 and 1954 will be on display with presentations from their private collectors.</p>
<p>Translator Pham Xuan Nguyen, researcher Lai Nguyen An and writer Nguyen Truong Quy will also hold a talk show today on the Vietnamese language press. They will discuss the role of press in the nation’s history – especially documents printed in the romanised-Vietnamese script, which was introduced to Viet Nam by Priest Alexandre de Rhodes in 1865.</p>
<p>The exhibition will run until Tuesday at the Ha Noi Library, 47 Ba Trieu Street in Ha Noi.</p>
<p>The online forum sachxua.net, the Dong Tay Culture and Language Centre and the Ha Noi Library organised the exhibition.</p>
<p><strong>Indian New Year gala in HCM City</strong></p>
<p>There is no single Indian New Year, but Indians living in HCM City celebrate UTSAV every year in mid-April, when it is indeed New Year in many parts of that country. This year it will be celebrated today at Queen Hall on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street in District 4 on April 18.</p>
<p>The fun starts at 6.30pm with cultural shows, a fashion show featuring clothes from various states, dances from around the country, Bollywood music and dance with an Indian DJ. Of course, there will be lots of Indian food as well as drinks.</p>
<p>Organisers said UTSAV was usually a family occasion, with lots of fun and games for children too.</p>

<p><strong>Project provides free playgrounds to Ha Noi children</strong></p>
<p>A free mobile playground will be provided to children in the old quarter of Ha Noi on Saturday evenings from today (17 April) till June 27.</p>
<p>The project is an initiative of the Think Playgrounds group, and is supported by the management board of the Ha Noi Old Quarter and Health Bridge.</p>
<p>The project, entitled Play Street, continues the previous activities of Think Playgrounds and partners to create free playgrounds for children in Ha Noi, and give them space to play with proper meaning.</p>
<p>The playground of the Play Street project will be located on Dao Duy Tu Street, (the section between Luong Ngoc Quyen Street and Hang Buom Street).</p>
<p>The first session will be held on Friday evening (from 8pm to 10pm). It will be organised every weekend evening (from 7pm to 9pm) till the end of June. All equipment of this mobile playground is expected to be handed over to the community or set up in some fixed playgrounds in the locality.</p>
<p>Play Street has equipment made of bamboo and recycled materials, free play space with themes that are regularly changed (such as chalk drawings, racing and cartoons), as well as traditional games such as bamboo jacks, the game of squares and stilt-walking.</p>
<p><strong>Farming, practical way to maintain Gong space in Gia Lai</strong></p>
<p>Exchanging two buffalos for a gong set is a vivid example of how the intangible heritage has effectively been preserved in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.</p>
<p>The Yang Bac commune People’s Committee has for many years allowed youth unions from local villages borrow land for farming, earning dozens of million VND per year. The money is used to cover their operation expenses, especially gong purchases.</p>
<p>Secretary of the Yang Bac Communist Youth Union Dinh Drap shared that his generation has fallen in love with the traditional instrument’s sound and all of them know how to play it.</p>
<p>Gong troupes have been set up gathering young people across 15 villages, he said.</p>
<p>In Gia Lai, in a bid to bring the music closer to children, many boarding schools have started teaching the gong as part of their educational programmes.</p>
<p>The province also organises a provincial gong festival every 4 years and a district-level event every two years.</p>
<p>Gia Lai is now preserving 5,655 gong sets, including 932 rare items.</p>
<p>The Central Highlands region, which comprises the five provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lam Dong, Gia Lai and Kon Tum, is home to stunning mythical landscapes and a significant population of diverse ethnic minorities and cultures.</p>
<p>In particular, the region’s gong culture was recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005.-</p>
<p><strong>Arts programme honours banking sector</strong></p>
<p>An arts programme on legend of monetary road was held in Ho Chi Minh City on April 17 to honour the Vietnamese banking sector for its great contributions to the development of the country.</p>
<p>The event was attended by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, and former Party and state leaders, along with leaders of central branches, ministries, and HCM City.</p>
<p>During the programme, the delegates reviewed the tradition of the banking sector over the nation’s history.</p>
<p>The programme also featured a wide variety of arts and cultural performances praising the beauty of the land and people of Vietnam.</p>
<p>Addressing the programme, the Prime Minister stressed the role of the banking system during war time as well as national construction and development today.</p>
<p>On May 6, 1951, President Ho Chi Minh signed a decree establishing the Vietnam National Bank which was responsible for issuing banknotes, managing the State Treasury and budget revenues, and conducting credit activities to serve commodity circulation and strengthening the state economy, as well as fighting the enemy on the currency monetary front.</p>
<p>During the anti-US war, the main tasks of the banking sector were consolidating the currency market, recovering the economy of the north of Vietnam after the fiercest years of the war against the US and promoting the development of agriculture, industry and trade to contribute to the cause of building socialism in the North and the struggle for liberation in the South.</p>
<p>Over the past years, the sector has actively contributed to ensuring the country’s social security, especially supporting the poor as well as people of ethnic minorities and in remote areas, emphasised the PM.</p>
<p>He also expressed his hope that the banking officials and staff will strive further to make the system develop more rapidly, comprehensively, effectively, safely and sustainably, contributing more to the national construction and defence in the new period.</p>
<p><strong>The secret identity of Vietnam’s new breakout author</strong></p>
<p>Publishing is an industry full of mysteries. Authors conceal themselves behind what they write, with the exception of memoirs and other personal narratives. Books are usually perfect hideaways for untold secrets.</p>
<p>Still it’s rare to have a writer, in this era of questioning and this growing culture of fame seeking, who is so diligent about keeping his or her identity a mystery. And very good at it.</p>
<p>When Tony Buổi Sáng, or Tony Morning, launched his Facebook page in 2013, it was almost impossible to foresee his rise to prominence. He posts regularly in unpolished Vietnamese about his life, study and work, in a voice that is amusingly egotistical, sometimes mildly sarcastic.</p>
<p>It’s a style that has been overworked by countless writers. But somehow Tony has managed to hit the right chord with thousands of young readers in Vietnam.</p>
<p>There is no clear through-line in what he writes. One day he may post about his experience with unfriendly Vietnam Airlines flight attendants, and the next he asks his audience to think about the social costs of eating dog meat. His voice at times borders on being didactic, if not patronizing.</p>
<p>But what he lacks in poise, he makes up with sincerity: he just wants young people to improve the image of the nation by being the best version of themselves.</p>
<p>The tapestry of his public persona – a Harvard-trained, cosmopolitan, outspoken entrepreneur with an unwavering interest in agriculture – has been mostly woven from the scarce threads provided in his short writings. The rest comes from what can be speculated between the lines. For</p>
<p>instance, he may have a disdain for the media, based on his recurring criticism that it only focuses on negative things and gives the public nothing to be hopeful for.</p>
<p>In terms of popularity, secrecy strangely never works against him. Local netizens have kept the rumor mill running over the past two years, gradually turning him into a household name. His Facebook page now has more than 340,000 fans, twice the number six months ago, and continues to add nearly 700 new followers a day.</p>
<p>That hardly qualifies him as a social media star in Vietnam, where top singers and comedians can have up to seven million followers. But for a new writer that nobody has ever met, Tony could make any brand-name author in the country jealous.</p>
<p>The secluded Tony Morning had his first big break last fall when “Coffee with Tony,” a collection of his most popular Facebook writings, hit the shelves. The book became an instant bestseller and is still in the top fives of many bookstores both online and bricks-and-mortar.</p>
<p>Vu Thi Thanh Thuy, a spokesperson for Lantabra, the publisher of the book, confirmed that it was a big hit. More than 40,000 copies have been sold so far and the upcoming fifth reprint of 20,000 more is being planned. In Vietnam’s relatively small publishing industry, any title that can move 15,000 copies is considered a major commercial success.</p>
<p>The publisher had followed Tony’s online footprints for months before finally securing the rights to republish his essays, seeing a life beyond the Internet for them. One of the conditions of the deal, Thuy said, is that her company has to keep mum about the author.</p>
<p>“We are fascinated by his writings and by how many young people have been inspired by him. We want more readers across the country to be uplifted by Tony’s positive thinking on life and work, especially those in rural areas who haven’t read him on the Internet yet,” Thuy said.</p>
<p>Industry insiders believe the publisher has taken quite a leap of faith with the book and some are actually surprised that it has paid off. They say publishers like authors who already have name recognition. Banking on a new writer from social media is not a good idea, much less one who refuses to appear publicly or speak to the press to promote the book.</p>
<p>International experts confirm that it is extremely rare in the book world to see a case like this. Peter Gordon, editor of the Asian Review of Books, said in English-speaking countries, using a pseudonym to hide one’s identity is not very common.</p>
<p>“The reason for using a pseudonym, or nom de plume, is often that the author has a public persona and feels that the book is in some ways contradictory with it,” he said.</p>
<p>Two recent cases, Gordon said, have been the Man Booker Prize winner John Banville and “Harry Potter” author J. K. Rowling. Both of them changed genres under a pseudonym, and both were soon unmasked because “pseudonyms in English rarely provide much privacy for very long,” he said.</p>
<p>“But the situation in Asian countries may well be different, politically and socially, and pseudonyms may therefore play a different role. But even so, I think it will remain rare: books sales and anonymity are not always entirely compatible,” Gordon said.</p>
<p>One can only guess as to why Tony chooses to stay hidden. No matter what the reason, if that allows him to write freely about things that he otherwise would probably keep to himself, then there’s no point wondering who he really is.</p>
<p>But privacy may come at the cost of believability, because who tells the story is just as important as the story itself. For someone whose social commentary has been praised as original and dead on, Tony has yet to legitimate his authority as an interpreter of events. More often than not he still feels like a fictional too-good-to-be-true character.</p>
<p>And yet that’s probably what his avid fans need. Tony, they say, is not an author but a funny, successful uncle whom they can reach out for moral support, over the titular symbolic cup of coffee. He is the epitome of social mobility and self improvement. He is their new role model.</p>
<p>The way many of his fans review the book is inexplicably similar to how devout people often describe their faith. Thuy of Lantabra, the publisher, seemed to support this far-fetched idea. “We do think this is more than just a book. It’s a kind of faith and the author is a missionary who is promoting it. We want readers to be enlightened and inspired,” she said.</p>
<p>If that’s the case, questions about the author and his credibility can easily be rendered invalid. When it comes to faith, storytelling is never bereft of mystery and fantasy. You either believe it, or you don’t.</p>
<p><strong>2nd Vietnam Book Day opens across country</strong></p>
<p>The 2nd Vietnam Book Day in Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Noi and Da Nang opened from April 18-21. On this occasion, many exchange activities are taken place, aiming to encourage and promote reading habit in the community and introduce historicak and cultural books to audiences through out the country.</p>
<p>This year’s festival themed “Saigon book street- Ho Chi Minh City” aims to mark the 40th Anniversary of South liberation and national reunification. (April 30).</p>
<p>The event attracted many publishing houses, such as Kim Dong, Nha Xuat Ban Tre (Youth Publishing House), Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House, Phuong Nam Book and more.</p>
<p>Many activities will be held during the event, such as workshops and talk shows, introduction of national anniversary-themed books, historical and cultural books as well as rare ancient and valuable publications.</p>
<p>The event is to encourage and promote reading habit in the community and raise awareness of using books as a tool for critical thinking. It will also celebrate appreciation for readers, writers, publishers, distributors, and other affiliates of the publishing industry.</p>
<p>The 2nd Vietnam Book Day in Hanoi also took place at Thong Nhat Park on April 17.</p>

<p><strong>Ha Noi sets off fireworks to celebrate National Reunification Day</strong></p>
<p>The capital Ha Noi will let off fireworks atfive locations as part of activities to celebrate National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975- April 30, 2015).</p>
<p>The fireworks display is planned for 15-minute shows at 9:00 pm on April 30 at Hoan Kiem lake, Thong Nhat park, Van Quan Lake, My Dinh National Stadium and Son Tay Town’s Flower Garden.</p>
<p>A national celebration scheduled at My Dinh National Convention Center, along with arts performances, sporting events, exhibitions, and talks will be held on May 18 to celebrate the 125th birthday of late President Ho Chi Minh.</p>
<p><strong>Publisher gives books by writer Son Nam to school</strong></p>
<p>Tre Publishing House has given books by writer Son Nam to Nguyen Hue Elementary School in HCMC’s District 6 to start its program of bringing the late writer’s books to schools in the southern region.</p>
<p>The publisher is calling for enterprises to support its program by buying those books for local schools.</p>
<p>“Before he died (in 2008), Son Nam had transferred the copyright of all of his books to Tre Pubinlishing House for free. Now, we use the sum which should have been used to pay him to buy 200 book collections of his to schools in Kien Giang Province, Son Nam’s hometown,” said Nguyen Minh Nhut, director of Tre Publishing House.</p>
<p>The publisher also calls for support from enterprises to bring Son Nam’s books to schools in HCMC and other provinces in the south to help teachers and students learn more about the culture of the south, he said.</p>
<p>Participating firms will be offered a 40% discount and for orders of more than 500 copies, the publisher will print new copies of those books with the names of the corporate donors on the covers of the books.</p>
<p>The same will also apply to firms which help Tre give other books to students provided that the books are chosen by the publisher.</p>
<p>Born Pham Minh Tai in 1926 in Kien Giang, Son Nam studied in Can Tho City and then took part in the war against French colonial rulers. After the Geneva Agreement in 1954, he moved to Saigon to write articles and books.</p>
<p>He left behind many works about southern Vietnamese literature. People describe him as ‘a dictionary on the South’ for his deep knowledge of the region.</p>

<p><strong>While most of those working in Vietnam’s tourist industry agree that granting visa exemption to more countries will lure more visitors to Vietnam, the country’s tourism administration has said that is going to take a really long time.</strong></p>

<p><em>Tuoi Tre</em> (Youth) newspaper following an op-ed by Luong Hoai Nam, former deputy head of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), who said the <strong><a href="#http://bit.ly/1Oz98C7">strict visa rule</a></strong> is hindering the country’s tourism from being attractive to worldwide vacationers.</p>
<p>The Ho Chi Minh City Travel Association recently called on the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to transfer its proposal to the central government, asking to add 12 markets to the list of countries exempt from Vietnamese visas.</p>
<p>Vietnam currently scraps visas for tourists from the ten-country ASEAN bloc, besides seven other countries, namely Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Russia, and Denmark.</p>
<p>“We want to add Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, the UK, Brazil, India, Ukraine, Latvia, and Estonia to the list,” Nguyen Thi Khanh, deputy chairwoman of the association, told <em>Tuoi Tre</em>.</p>
<p>These countries are “very potential markets” for Vietnam’s tourism, as holidaymakers there are willing to stay long and spend more money in the Southeast Asian country, Khanh said.</p>
<p>These markets will boost tourism revenue and economic growth as well as contribute to enhancing the Vietnamese tourism competitiveness in comparison with other regional countries.</p>
<p>“Waiving visas for tourists from these countries will help attract a huge number of international visitors to Vietnam in the future,” she added.</p>
<p>Thailand has a list of 48 countries exempt from visa requirements, whereas the respective figures for Singapore and China are 124 and 80 nations.</p>
<p>Nguyen Van Tuan, head of the VNAT, which is managed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, said the issue is now beyond the administration’s ability.</p>
<p>“We already received the proposition from the Ho Chi Minh City Travel Association, but all we could do was forward it to the central government,” Tuan said.</p>
<p>Upon receiving the proposal, the government has assigned the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to consider it.</p>
<p>“So the issue is now in the hands of these ministries,” Tuan said, adding a quick solution should not be expected.</p>
<p>The VNAT also wants the visa rule to be less complicated and “it would be great if we can scrap visas for as many countries as possible,” the director told <em>Tuoi Tre</em>.</p>
<p>“But the consideration and approval of this proposition entail many factors and need a road map [for realization],” he admitted.</p>
<p><strong>Visa exemption a plus for tourism</strong></p>
<p>Le Hoang Khanh Long, deputy director of Exxotissimo Vietnam, a travel organizer known for its Asia tour packages, said a visa-exempt policy will be much more meaningful to those who spontaneously want to travel to Vietnam than those who have planned their trip.</p>
<p>“Imagine a tourist wants to change the destination for his vacation at the last minute,” Khanh told <em>Tuoi Tre</em>.</p>
<p>“He will then choose the country with the most easy visa rule, which is not the case of Vietnam.”</p>
<p>Vietnam is now an unattractive destination for global tourists thanks to its time-consuming visa procedures, he added.</p>
<p>“So we should offer visa exemption to tourists from such potential market as the EU,” he urged.</p>
<p>Hoang Huu Loc, chairman of another tour organizer, Saigontourist, also believes a visa-exempt policy will be a plus for Vietnam’s tourism, especially when the country’s tourism infrastructure is lagging far behind Southeast Asian peers such as Thailand or Malaysia.</p>
<p>“The fee to get a visa is not really as important as the complicated formalities holidaymakers have to go through,” he said.</p>
<p>Tourists from some European countries and Australia or New Zealand are still much interested in traveling to Vietnam, Loc said.</p>
<p>“It will be far easier for them to plan their trip if they are not to worry about applying for a visa, as there are already nonstop flights between their countries and Vietnam,” he added.</p>
<p>For Bui Viet Thuy Tien, director of Asian Trails, a travel firm that has offices in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, visa exemption is less important than procedure simplification.</p>
<p>While Tien agrees that the 12 markets the Ho Chi Minh City Travel Association wants to waive visas for are potential markets for Vietnam, she said it is not really necessary to exempt them from visa requirements.</p>
<p>“It is essential that they get a visa easily and quickly upon their arrival at our airports,” she said.</p>
<p>The current time-consuming and complicated visa application procedure is discouraging tourists, who should be able to apply for a Vietnamese visa online,” Tien suggested.</p>
<p>“Other countries are doing this and tourists will find Vietnam no longer attractive if it just cannot do the same,” she concluded.</p>

<p><em>The formation and development of Ha Noi’s Old Quarter, one of the last traditional handicraft and trading areas in Southeast Asia, is being featured at an exhibition in the capital’s downtown.</em></p>

<p>Titled Ke Cho – Pho Co (City Dwellers – Old Quarter), the exhibition consists of more than 100 photos, images and explanations, maps and miniature models of houses and streets, which showcase the changes of the area since King Ly Thai To chose it to build the new capital city in 1010.</p>
<p>Various video clips are also being screened as part of the exhibition.</p>
<p>The exhibition highlights the most important periods of the city’s development: the golden age of the commercial quarter during the 17th-19th century:; the French colonisation in 1884-1954; and the revival period after the doi moi (renewal) policy was applied.</p>
<p>Each period is illustrated with information on urban architecture, economics, lifestyles of the residents, and work being done for the Old Quarter restoration.</p>
<p>“I’m interested in the model of the wooden tube houses of local traders,” said Robie Brown from the Netherlands.</p>
<p>“They were composed of several buildings separated by courtyards. I didn’t know before that the house was wisely designed to be full of air and light. It served both as a home for a family and a boutique or workshop for traders or craftsmen.”</p>
<p>Brown was also attracted by the golden age of the commercial quarter when craftsmen settled in the city.</p>
<p>During that period each ‘urban village’ was composed of one or several rural villages. These people formed a craft guild, lived on the same street and made and sold some specific products. The names of today’s streets bear this fact: Hang Bac (Silver) Street, Hang Dong (Copper) Street and Hang Bong (Cotton) Street.</p>
<p>Sarah Wright from Germany said she was impressed by the modern concept of this exhibition.</p>
<p>“My children like opening closed cabinets, where they kept surprising objects popular in the past in the Old Quarter, such as a roll of colourful thread, a box for keeping betel and areca, and a hair pin. It’s so informative and interesting. We regret that we don’t have much time to remain longer to see the documentaries.”</p>
<p>Pham Tuan Long, deputy head of the Old Quarter Management Board, said that beside tourists, the exhibition is also aimed at local residents to help them understand the beauty and hidden charms of the area and help them have a deeper understanding about the city.</p>
<p>The exhibition was developed by experts from Toulouse, in co-operation with Vietnamese and foreign individuals and organisations, scientists, historians, graphic designers, painters and photographers.</p>
<p>“It is one of various measures being taken at the moment to bring into full play the Old Quarter’s values and to preserve it,” Long added.</p>
<p>The exhibition is held at the Old Quarter Culture Exchange Centre, 50 Dao Duy Tu Street.</p>

Royal rickshaw comes home, to be displayed in central Vietnam

<p><strong>A rickshaw which belonged to a king of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), Vietnam’s last monarchy, has finally arrived home after some 100 years being away and will be put on display in the central region next week as a happy ending for insiders’ unprecedentedly concerted efforts.</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://bit.ly/1HoxTk4"><img alt="1664033-sx5yl8r5" class="attachment-medium aligncenter" height="295" rel="lightbox" src="http://bit.ly/1HoxTk4" width="500" /></a></p>
<p>The rickshaw, which was gifted by King Thanh Thai (1879-1954), the 10th king of the Nguyen Dynasty, to his mother during his lifetime, is considered a royal treasure which is highly cherished for its technical, aesthetic, cultural, and historical value.</p>
<p>The prized item was custom-made from “trac” wood encrusted with conch and boasts sophisticated carvings.</p>
<p>The rickshaw will be displayed at an exhibition, which is poised to run on Wednesday at Dien Tho Palace, part of the UNESCO-recognized Complex of Monuments in Hue City.</p>
<p>The palace is a prominent highlight in Hue, the capital city of the central province of Thua Thien-Hue.</p>
<p>The homecoming is the fruit of Vietnamese culture authorities’ campaign, with the leader of a Paris-based museum giving up its legal right to purchase the object and fund-raising efforts.</p>
<p><a href="#http://bit.ly/1D80xRm"><strong>At an auction in Tours, France on June 13, 2014</strong></a> of various treasured items, including King Thanh Thai’s rickshaw, Vietnam’s people won the bid for the vehicle for €45,000. The item fetched €55,800 including organization fees.</p>
<p>In an unexpected twist, Katia Mollet, a curator of the Guimet Museum, declared that France had the right to buy the rickshaw for the same price.</p>
<p>State-run organizations in France were entitled by law to purchase the items at the same price as that offered by the auction winners.</p>
<p>The Vietnam Embassy in France and Vietnamese culture authorities persevered in talking the French museum’s leader out of the intention, and sought for support from French cultural agencies and experts on Vietnamese culture for Vietnam’s bid to purchase the rickshaw.</p>
<p>Some days following the auction, the Guimet Museum, which is well known for its painstaking conservation of a number of Vietnamese artifacts and has helped promote them through its exhibits, gave up its right to buy the rickshaw.</p>
<p>Buu Y, a respected culture researcher in Hue, was taken aback by the full-length details of King Thanh Thai’s rickshaw in a record kept by the French auction company.</p>
<p>According to the auctioning record, the king sold his rickshaw and bed – another royal treasure – to Prosper Jourdan, head of the king’s escort team, who took it to France in 1907.</p>
<p>The rickshaw has seen repairs to and restoration of some of its parts since, the record added.</p>
<p>Jourdan’s heirs later decided to put these two invaluable items up for auction and expressed their wish that after the auction, they will be displayed in Hue, which was Vietnam’s imperial capital during the Nguyen Dynasty.</p>
<p>At the June 13, 2014 auction, where the rickshaw was offered for sale, the price of the bed began at €1,000 and soared to €100,000 only after five minutes.</p>
<p>The two Vietnamese-French people assigned by the Vietnam Embassy in France to attend the auction failed to buy the priceless bed, which fetched a total of €124,000, including organization fees.</p>

<p>Phan Thanh Hai, director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, still vividly remembers his anxiety when he proposed that Thua Thien-Hue spend US$50,000 purchasing the rickshaw.</p>
<p>To Hai’s delighted astonishment, the chair of the provincial People’s Committee quickly approved his proposal.</p>
<p>He also underlined the vital roles of the Vietnam Embassy in France, the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Sports, and the France Embassy in Vietnam in persuading the Guimet Museum’s leader to give up on the quest for buying the rickshaw.</p>
<p>Many Vietnamese expats in France and local culture enthusiasts made contributions totaling nearly €15,000 to purchase the royal vehicle.</p>
<p>National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines offered a 50-percent discount on the fares for transporting the rickshaw from France back to Vietnam, while Bao Viet, a local insurance company, also helped with half of the insurance fee.</p>
<p>“This is the very first time an auction has received wholehearted support from that many state agencies, organizations, and individuals. It’s also an unprecedented case that authorities of a Vietnamese province spent such a whopping sum purchasing an antique,” Hai noted.</p>
<p><strong>Stepping up efforts to bring back national treasures</strong></p>
<p>According to researcher Nguyen Xuan Hoa, former director of Thua Thien-Hue’s Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, though the Hue Royal Antique Museum is currently home to 11,500 artifacts associated with Hue Palace and its opulent royal lifestyle, many of the royal collectibles have gone missing after historical events and wars, or were lost to negligence or inadequate management.</p>
<p>Hai, director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, said the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is slated to join a UNESCO convention regarding the return of stolen cultural heritage.</p>
<p>Joining the convention will provide Vietnam with a legal foundation to claim back its antiques which are currently owned by other countries.</p>
<p>Hai’s center has recently proposed that Vietnamese embassies in other countries find out about Vietnamese antiques.</p>
<p>Hai also suggested that competent agencies consider adding policies on auctioning and managing lost antiques to legal documents regarding cultural heritages.</p>
<p>Local researcher Nguyen Xuan Hoa urged that a fund be set up to help bring back home more of the Nguyen Dynasty’s collectibles in the coming time.</p>

<p><b>The term “grey-blue glazed ceramic” was firstly mentioned by experts of Vietnam Fine Arts Museum to dedicate to a type of ceramic that has a surface that is covered by a heavy blue glaze, partly mixed with grey or yellow brown glaze. It has a heavy and thick bone. Experts said the craftsmen must have been excellent at fire controlling and bone material so they could make such big size ceramics with an even and heavy glaze.</b></p>
