Swansea end Manchester Utd’s unbeaten start

SWANSEA: Second-half goals from Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis earned Swansea City a stirring 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday (Aug 30) as Garry Monk’s side went fourth in the Premier League.
Juan Mata’s 48th-minute strike put United ahead at the Liberty Stadium, but Swansea hit back with quick-fire goals to take all three points and edge Louis van Gaal’s men into fifth place.
It was a third successive league win over United for Swansea and ended the visitors’ unbeaten record, bringing them down to earth after their mid-week 4-0 win over Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off round.
On a pitch that was made just about perfect by early-morning drizzle, United’s first chance of the game came inside 90 seconds. Swansea conceded a free-kick 25 yards from goal and were delighted to see goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski palm Memphis Depay’s shot to safety.
Mata was a yard too high, a minute later, from distance and though Swansea tried, it was the visitors who controlled the game in a midfield dominated by Mata, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.
Mata was causing all sorts of problems with his movement in the final third, but when the ball was dished up on a plate to the Spaniard in the 16th minute, he dragged his shot wide of Fabianski’s near post.
Swansea’s first chance fell to Gomis. Jonjo Shelvey won a tackle in his own half, but when Ayew picked out Gomis with a lofted delivery, the Frenchman screwed his shot wide.
Two minutes later, Swansea missed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock. Shelvey’s free-kick was turned into the path of Gylfi Sigurdsson, who from nine yards dragged his shot wide of the far post.
Shelvey’s attempted chip, barely a minute later, was comfortably dealt with by Sergio Romero, but Gomis then went closer by driving towards goal and stabbing a shot against the post.
Having settled, Swansea were beginning to pose one or two serious questions of a United side who looked vulnerable at the back. Two minutes into the second half, Matteo Darmian was too slow to react to a ball across the back four from Daley Blind and was forced to trip Wayne Routledge.
Williams thwarts Rooney
The Italian full-back escaped a yellow card and was fortunate to see Shelvey’s free-kick land in the arms of Romero.
A minute after that, United found themselves in front. Luke Shaw broke down the United left and delivered a cross to the far post that Mata converted despite the attentions of Ashley Williams.
Williams came close to gifting United a second in the 51st minute. Depay crossed from the right and when Williams went to clear, the ball sliced off his left boot and forced Fabianski into a smart save.
Gary Monk replaced the ineffective Routledge with Ki Sung-yueng with 32 minutes remaining and immediately sent Ayew to partner Gomis in a 4-4-2 formation with a midfield diamond.
The new shape worked immediately. Williams released Sigurdsson down the right and when the Icelandic midfielder delivered toAyew, the Ghanaian’s downward header flashed past Romero.
The game moved on quickly and with United second best in all areas, Swansea seized the moment and took the lead through Gomis. Shelvey and Sigurdsson combined on halfway before Ayew brilliantly sent the Frenchman through using the outside of his left foot.
Gomis failed to get a good connection on his shot, but it was enough to beat Romero at his near post.
The introduction of Marouane Fellaini gave United more presence in the final third but Swansea defended with a degree of comfort throughout the final quarter with Williams, once again, a tower of strength.
Rooney had one final chance to snatch a point, but having worked his way into a shooting position, he delayed his shot and allowed Williams to clear the danger. It summed up a frustrating afternoon for Rooney and United.

Roma send Juventus to second straight defeat

Roma condemned Juventus to a second straight defeat at the start of the season for the first time in the Old Lady of Turin’s history with a 2-1 Serie A victory on Sunday.

MILAN: Roma condemned Juventus to a second straight defeat at the start of the season for the first time in the Old Lady of Turin’s history with a 2-1 Serie A victory on Sunday (Aug 30).
Runners-up to Juventus the past two seasons, Roma raced into a 2-0 lead with 11 minutes to play thanks to Bosnia pair Miralem Pjanic and Edin Dzeko after Juventus had been reduced to 10 men following Patrice Evra’s sending-off.
The champions pulled a consolation goal back, their first of the league season, through Paulo Dybala in the final minutes. But Roma held on to beat Juventus in the league for the first time since a Francesco Totti winner sealed a 1-0 win in February 2013.
“We dominated them so we’re looking at the glass half-full, but we went to sleep at the end and gave them a really soft goal,”Roma captain Daniele De Rossi told Sky Sport. “But I think we played incredibly. You can’t forget, Juventus were challenging for the Champions League (in the final) a few months ago.”
Beaten 3-1 by Barcelona in the final of last season’s Champions League, Juve have now failed to win their opening two games of a Serie A season for the very first time, having lost 1-0 at home to Udinese last week.
“I’m not worried, but we have to change something, namely our mental approach,” said Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri, whose side has undergone several changes since last season. “Unfortunately, in football these things happen.”
French left back Lucas Digne made his Roma debut following a loan move from Paris Saint-Germain and held his own amid a tense and high-octane encounter.
Roma went about their task with a swagger in a dominant first half that left Juve’s Gianluigi Buffon by far the busier of the two goalkeepers.
Iago Falque, Mohamed Salah, Radja Nainggolan and Alessandro Florenzi kept the Roma midfield ticking as Juventus struggled to find their rhythm, with Buffon relieved when Pjanic’s angled effort came off the far upright.
A Giorgio Chiellini yellow card, for the defender’s second foul from behind on Pjanic, was indicative of a niggly encounter in which several players clashed. Roma had earlier seen claims for a penalty waved away after Florenzi came crashing down in front of Mario Mandzukic as he ran in to the box.
The first chance of the second half fell to Juventus, but Martin Caceres skewed off target after De Rossi had cleared Chiellini’s header into his path. But Roma turned the tempo up a notch again.
The pace and movement of Florenzi and Salah were causing problems, and Pjanic again came close to the opener when he held off markers to spin on a loose ball in the area.
Roma had the momentum and a Salah-led counter-attack edged the hosts closer to the opener, Dzeko winning possession just outside the penalty box only for Buffon to save desperately with his legs.
Moments later, Buffon was left rooted to the spot after Pjanic stepped up and curled a free kick over the wall and in to send the stadium into raptures.
On a rare Juve attack, Paul Pogba flashed a header wide from a corner but Pjanic almost had his second when his snap-shot from Dzeko’s pass in close was blocked.
On-loan Chelsea winger Juan Cuadrado came on for Simone Padoin in the closing stages but Juve had to reshuffle when Evra saw red for a second bookable offence when he and Pogba sandwiched Nainggolan.
Roma capitalised immediately. Iturbe, who had replaced Salah moments earlier, was afforded space on the left of the area and lobbed an inviting cross for Dzeko to meet high in the air and head into Buffon’s bottom left corner.
Dybala’s consolation three minutes from time gave Juve brief hope but at the death Roma keeper Wojciech Szczesny performed heroics to keep out Bonucci’s header from a corner.

Vietnamese, Japanese runners win Da Nang international marathon titles

Koji Nishizawa from Japan and Vietnam’s Hoang Thi Thanh won the men’s and women’s marathon (42km) at the Danang International Marathon Race on August 30.
This was the second time in a row that Thanh, a member of the national athletics team of Viet Nam, won the title.
“It’s a great honour for me to clinch the title again. The cool weather helped me and all participants during the race,” Thanh said after crossing the finish line.
“The race is actually a tough test for us in preparation for major races in the future.”
In the half-marathon (21km) event, Vietnam’s Le Van Tuan finished first in the men’s division, while Japanese Uekuma Hiromi from Japan stood on the victory podium for the women’s event.
The race, which was organised in the city for the third time, drew 4,200 runners from 37 countries and territories competing in the marathon, half marathon and Fun Walk (5km).
The ‘Run for Peace’ race, was organised by the city’s Culture, Sport and Tourism Department, the World Marathon Company and Pulse Active.
It is the first Vietnamese marathon certified by the International Amateur Athletics Association-Association of International Marathons and Distance Races, and used the automatic timing system, the Chronotrack, to clock runners’ times.
According to the organising committee, athletes who finish the Danang International Marathon Race are eligible to participate in the Boston Marathon.
Last year’s race involved 4,000 participants, 400 of whom were professional athletes from 27 countries and territories.

SOUTHAMPTON: Dusan Tadic scored a quick-fire brace as Southampton beat 10-man Norwich City 3-0 at St Mary’s on Sunday (Aug 30) to record a first win of the Premier League campaign.
Seventh last season, Ronald Koeman’s Southampton had drawn two and lost one of their first three games, but victory lifted them into the top half of the table, one point above promoted Norwich.
After Norwich right-back Steven Whittaker had been sent off for two bookable offences, Graziano Pelle opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time and Serbia winger Tadic struck twice in the second half.
It was the first time that 34-year-old Norwich manager Alex Neil had tasted defeat in an away league game since his appointment in January.
Showing three changes to the team eliminated from the Europa League by Danish champions FC Midtjylland on Thursday,Southampton were quick to put their opponents on the back foot.
James Ward-Prowse extended Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy with a dangerous free-kick in the second minute, while Pelle headed wide at a corner, Sadio Mane saw a shot held by Ruddy and Tadic drilled a shot wide.
Cameron Jerome squandered a chance to put Norwich ahead when he could not make telling contact with Graham Dorrans’s volleyed cross and in the 31st minute, the visitors’ chances took a hit with Whittaker’s dismissal.
Having just been booked for preventing Matt Targett from taking a quick throw-in, the Scotland international was shown a second yellow card for holding Tadic back on halfway.
Neil adjusted by sending on defender Andre Wisdom for schemer Wes Hoolahan, but his side’s hopes of holding out until half-time were dashed in first-half stoppage time.
After Ward-Prowse had done well to recover possession wide on the right, Mane crossed and Pelle swept the ball home at the near post.
Norwich survived a flurry of chances around the hour mark, with Ruddy parrying well from Mane and half-time substitute Jay Rodriguez before Pelle curled a shot into the side-netting from the edge of the box.
But Tadic scored twice in three minutes to break Norwich’s spirit, applying an assured first-time finish to Mane’s right-wing cross in the 64th minute and then following in to tap home when Pelle’s powerful header was parried by Ruddy.
Southampton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg denied Bradley Johnson an injury-time consolation for Norwich, with Johnson’s fellow substitute Gary Hooper wastefully dragging the rebound wide.

PRATTVILLE: American Austin Ernst took a two-stroke lead into the final round of the LPGA Classic on Sunday (Aug 30), seeking a second LPGA title in a marathon final day at the weather-hit event.
Ernst completed a bogey-free third-round 68 on the Senator course on Sunday morning to take a two shot lead over Taiwan’s Tseng Ya-ni and American Lexi Thompson.
Tseng, a former world number one vying for her first title since 2012, carded a one-under 71, while Thompson posted a 69 for 205. They were one stroke in front of American Kris Tamulis and South Korean Kim Sei-Young, who both shot 67 for 206.
Weather delays totalling five hours on Saturday saw Ernst and Tseng complete just four holes before darkness halted play.
So Ernst knew she was facing a long march in her effort to add another title to the first career trophy she lifted in Portland last year.
“It will basically just be get as many birdies as I can,” she said. “I know the scores are still going to be low. It’s just going to be more continuous golf than usual.”

Thanh, Nishizawa win marathon titles

DA NANG (VNS) — Koji Nishizawa from Japan and Viet Nam’s Hoang Thi Thanh won the men’s and women’s marathon (42km) at the Da Nang International Marathon Race yesterday.
This was the second time in a row that Thanh, a member of the national athletics team of Viet Nam, won the title.

“Lotteria Football Challenge Cup 2015″ starts

PANO – The national junior football tournament “Lotteria Football Challenge Cup 2015″ was officially kicked off on August 29th at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center.
Patronized by the General Department of Sports and Physical Training and the Vietnam Football Federation, the event is an annual football junior tournament starting from 2013 to develop football movement among children aged 7 to 9 years old and provide an educational playground of honesty, sportsmanship, sense of discipline and solidarity.
16 teams from Hanoi
Right after the opening ceremony, the teams drew lots to form groups. The teams will compete in their groups for candidates for the final round .
At the final round, teams will play for the first and second places of each group to enter the knock-out round to find the winners of the cup.

Japanese, Vietnamese top int’l marathon in Da Nang

Japanese and Vietnamese runners dominated Da Nang International Marathon 2015 with 5,000 athletes from 24 countries worldwide and various localities in Vietnam participated on August 30.
Japan’s Koji Nishizawa won the men’s Full Marathon (42.159 km) while Vietnamese Hoang Thi Thanh came in first in the women’s category.

Le Van Tuan from Vietnam took the title of the men’s 21-kilometre division and Japanese Uekuma Hiromi finished first in the women’s category.
Da Nang International Marathon 2015, also including a 5-kilometre fun run and walk, was the first professional Marathon in Vietnam certified by IAAF-AIMS (International Association of Athletics Federations and Association of International Marathons and Distance Races).
It was co-organized by Da Nang city’s Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism and the World Marathon Tours and Pulse Active companies.

Vietnam swimming talent says improper training plan prevents him from winning more

Vietnamese swimming talent Hoang Quy Phuoc said he would have achieved better results in his swimming career had he been given a proper training plan in the last four years.
He expressed the regret in a recent interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper in Hanoi, where he is undergoing treatment for his back injury at Vietnam Sports Hospital.
Now at the age of 22, Phuoc said he has worked with many different coaches, one after another, and that has prevented him from benefiting from a consistent training method.
The swimmer rose to fame in 2010, when he won nine gold medals and broke nine national records at the National Sports Festival held in the central city of Da Nang.
At the 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Indonesia in 2011, he won two gold medals in the men’s 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly events.
In 53.07 seconds, he broke the SEA Games record in the men’s 100m butterfly and bettered the result of Joseph Schooling, now a rising star in Singapore.
Phuoc was the first Vietnamese swimmer to gain these results in regional tournaments.
After that, sports authorities in Da Nang and the General Department of Sports and Physical Training approved a plan to send him to a training course in the U.S. in early 2012.
But the two Vietnamese coaches leading a team of five swimmers got into a deep disagreement and Phuoc had to return home early.
He was later sent to Australia, China, and Japan for training with different coaches and he failed to get better achievements.
Nguyen Hong Minh, head of the Vietnamese sports delegation at different tournaments abroad, said, “I can confirm that Hoang Quy Phuoc is a rare swimming talent of Vietnam but we have caused him to fail due to our inconsistent plan for his training.”
Athletes for elite competitions must be trained in a systematic and consistent manner for long-term development, he added.
As an elite swimmer, Phuoc said he had to cook himself and was given no guidance on nutrition.
Now, he is renting a hotel room in Hanoi for his back injury treatment that is expected to last for two weeks.
He said he has suffered from that injury for years but pain has only erupted this year.

The monument of Dao Tri Tombstone and Temple location is the evidence of a historical celebrity of Phu Yen land, who was involved in the historical events of Vietnamese people in the 19th century.
Dao Tri Tomb is now located behind Tan Thanh village, on the northeast slopes of Hon Vung mountain, with an elevation of 20 meters above the sea level, about 300 meters from National Highway No.1. The Location is in the land of Mr. Dao Van, whose house is approximately 1km to the north of the Tomb. Dao Tri Temple was destroyed by the war, the remain is the foundation of only an 7,2mx8m area…
Addressing at the ceremony for being recognized as the National historic site, Deputy Chairman of the Provincial People’s Community, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc An confirmed, Grave and Temple site of Dao Tri bears an enormous cultural and historical significance. To promote its historic value, the Provincial People’s Committee proposed Song Cau town People’s Committee to collaborate with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and related sectors to promote the tasks of propagating and introducing the value of the monument; strengthen managing and protecting monuments; research and plan the project for preserving, renovating, restoring the monument so that the ruins can become the spot for learning, researching and educating on the tradition. Connecting the Monument with the other relics in Xuan Dai bay area and surroundings will form the sightseeing routes in the province.

Exhibition features Vietnam’s 70-year achievements

An exhibition to showcase the nation’s socio-economic achievements, one of the largest celebrations to mark the 70th year since Vietnam gained independence, was opened in Hanoi on August 28.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Planning and Investment, saw the presence of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Deputy Prime Ministers Vu Duc Dam and Pham Binh Minh, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi, and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Le Thanh Hai.
The exhibition highlights the sacrifices of the Vietnamese people in protecting their country following the historic victory over aggressors in the August Revolution that led to the establishment of the nation on September 2, 1945.
The impressive achievements made in both social and economic terms since the Doi moi (renewal) policy was created in 1986 are also outlined.
More than 60 venues were set up by 25 ministries and Government agencies presenting archival and historical artefacts from the last 70 years.
Additionally, nearly 30 localities, including Tien Giang and Dong Nai provinces in the south and Ha Giang province in the north, are providing cultural folk music and food specialities.
At the opening ceremony, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam said that through the implementation of the renewal process and international integration, Vietnam has grown from an impoverished and backward nation to a middle-income one.
He said it is now one of the world’s top exporters of farm produce, contributing to global food security.
“Vietnam has made itself exemplary in poverty reduction as well as in implementing Millennium Development Goals,” he said, adding that this has been highly appreciated by the world community.
“Quite a few indicators of Vietnam relating to human beings and social security are much higher than those in countries of similar development level.
“From a centrally planned subsidised economy, Vietnam has turned itself into a dynamic economy operating in a socialist-oriented market.
“It has total export and import turnover of 300 billion USD, about 1.5 times higher than the country’s GDP,” the Deputy PM said.
Vietnam has established trade relationships with most of nations and economies and is an attractive destination for foreign investors. It has nearly 300 billion USD in investment from 100 countries and territories funnelled into about 20,000 projects.
Vietnam is also an active and responsible member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), regional and international cooperation institutions and the United Nations.
“The exhibition aims to showcase all Vietnamese people have produced in the past 70 years – with cooperation and assistance from friends all over the world,” he said.
Vietnam Television (VTV) and the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), the two largest state news agencies, are also represented at the exhibition.
On September 15, 1945, when Vietnam’s Declaration of Independence was made public worldwide in English, French and Vietnamese, it also marked the birth of the Vietnam News Agency.
The agency has more than 60 news and information products and is a supplier of information for much of the nation’s media. It has 63 representative offices nationwide and 30 offices in five continents worldwide.
Visiting the VNA’s display booths, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung showed interest in equipment, exhibits, and personal belongings that agency workers used during the war time.
Among more than 400 journalists who lost their life during this time, 260 journalists were working for the Vietnam News Agency on the battlefield.
The exhibition will run until September 3 at Giang Vo National Exhibition Centre.

<td>(CPV) – The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has sent an official dispatch asking heads of their units, directors of departments of tourism, departments of culture, sports and tourism to ensure safety and security for tourists on National Day (September 2nd).

Accordingly, the ministry asked their units and localities to seriously follow the Prime Minister’s instruction 14/CT-TTg on enhancing state management effectiveness on controlling prices and the quality of services to ensure environmental hygiene, food safety and security for tourists.
Travel businesses were urged to enhance activities to popularize traffic safety and solutions to prevent traffic accidents on the holiday.
The ministry will coordinate with relevant agencies to arrange forces to check and ensure traffic safety at tourist destinations. In addition, travel businesses and wharfs were urged to have suitable and flexible transportation plans to meet the travel demand of foreign and domestic tourists./.

Exhibition highlights Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements 2015

(Cinet) – An exhibition entitled “Innovation, integration and development” opened on August 28th at Vietnam Exhibition Fair Center.
This is a major event hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in collaboration with other ministries, agencies and local organizations to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day, September 2nd.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said: “The exhibition of Vietnam’s Socio-Economic achievements 2015 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day, September 2nd was organized to introduce the results in the striving of Vietnamese people with the cooperation and valuable assistance of friends all over the world in the cause of national defense and reconstruction”.
With an area of 12.000 m2 for indoor display and 3.000 m2 for outdoor display, the exhibition gathered 66 exhibition stands together including 27 ones of ministries and sectors, 27 of local regions and 12 of busineses and was divided into 4 large exhibition areas: general exhibition areas, the showroom of the ministries and sectors, the displaying of local regions and exhibition areas of businesses.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said at the opening ceremony of the exhibition.
Contents and forms were represented abundantly, diversely and impressively. Each display area was shown by the array, block materials with the images, objects, films…which were various and vibrant, contributing to affirming and honoring the great achievements of economic and social fields of the country in last seventy years, especially during the regeneration and integration.
In addition to representing contents, many ministries, sectors and localities also organized art performances, exchanges and introduced the projects, typical shemes or programs that promoted, introduced products and motivated the business development…of ministries and localities.
The exhibition stand of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism with pictures, rich materials introduced the achievements of its construction and development in the fields of culture, sports, tourism, and family, confirming the role of the industry in economic and social development of the country in the process of modernization, industrialization and international integration today. Especially the pictures, vivid documentary materials introduced and promoted the country and people of Vietnam.
Besides the main topics of the booth units involved, in the framework of the exhibition also took place many supplementing activities such as seminars, trade promotion activities, particularly performances in chemistry, arts and ones by the Organizing Committee and the units taking part in the exhibition. These activities took place daily at the large outdoor stage and at the booth of each unit, which created the vibrant and attractive atmosphere, drew the attraction of all visitors.

Gia Lai, Binh Duong in important win at V-League

Hoang Anh Gia Lai gave themselves a chance of staying in V.League 1 while Becamex Binh Duong moved a step closer to winning the title after their victories in the 23rd round yesterday.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai beat relegation rivals Dong Nai 2-1 away at a stadium they have never won at before.
It was the first match of this season Hoang Anh Gia Lai were without their most important striker Le Cong Phuong, due to suspension.
However, his absence did not affect the young squad who are determined to play in the top flight for a second year in a row with their new group of home-grown talent.
Dong Nai enjoyed strong home support, and nearly opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Nsi’s shot fizzed wide.
The visiting side however found the net just five minutes later.
Nguyen Van Toan converted a perfect pass from the left wing from midfielder Nguyen Hoang Thien to send the opener past goalkeeper Thanh Diep.
Dong Nai had been given the added incentive before the match of a double bonus if they won, and continue to push forward.
They needed just eight minutes for Tcheuko Minh to find the net with a sharp shot past goalie Van Tien.
Tran Vu made it 2-1 for Hoang Anh Gia Lai in the 62nd minute with 20m free kick after missing several chance in the first half.
Dong Nai wasted their best chance when Hai Anh’s penalty hit the bar.
The victory lifted Hoang Anh Gia Lai to second from bottom with 20 points, with Dong Nai propping up the table with 17 points.
Hoang Anh Gia Lai next meet Ha Noi T&T at home while Dong Nai face Dong Tam Long An.
Binh Duong extended their gap over FLC Thanh Hoa to five points after beating them 5-2 yesterday.
Former national striker Nguyen Anh Duc needed only four minutes to find the goal.
Captain Nguyen Trong Hoang and Abass scored a brace to make it 3-0, but Thanh Hoa’s Omar narrowed the gap with a close-range shot at the end of the first half.
Mose and Quang Vinh got their names on the scoreboard for the host team while Le Van Tan bagged the second for Thanh Hoa.
Binh Duong need just four points from the last three matches to defend their title.
They will travel north to face Hai Phong next week.
In other games, Ha Noi T&T rose into the top three after s 3-0 win over Sanna Khanh Hoa at Hang Day Stadium.
Former champions SHB Da Nang defeated Can Tho 3-1, Quang Ninh Coal beat Dong Tam Long An 3-1, Song Lam Nghe An overcame Dong Thap 1-0, and Quang Nam trounced Hai Phong 5-0.

NDO – Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh told the Mekong Delta region to restructure its economy to move labour from the agriculture sector to industry, processing and service sectors serving agricultural production in order to raise the income of locals.
He also asked the region to promote the production of large scale high quality agricultural products to create higher added value for products.
The Deputy PM made the request at a workshop on the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta region in the 2016-2020 period held in Can Tho on August 21.
The Mekong Delta region has a strategic significance to the national socio-economic development and plays a key role in the agricultural production of the country. As of the end of 2014, the region accounted for over 90% of rice and 60% of aquatic products for export.
The region posted an export revenue of US$12.3 billion in 2014, equivalent to 8.2% of the total national export revenue. The poverty rate was reduced from 7.4% in 2013 to 5.7% in 2014, and is expected to fall to 4.5% in 2015.
However, delegates raised many shortcomings of the region including the slow economic structure transfer, the inefficiency in attracting FDI projects, and low turnover from the tourism sector (accounting for only 3% of the national tourism sector).
They also pointed out other problems such as the lack of production connectivity between localities in the region, unqualified workers to serve high-tech industries in addition to the poor infrastructure in the areas of education, health and culture.
Deputy PM Ninh noted that the region should improve the social infrastructure associated with the economic infrastructure to meet the demand of both local people and enterprises.
He also told the region to mobilise more sources from the private sectors to invest in infrastructure development amid the tightened budget.
The workshop was jointly held by the Southwest Steering Committee, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the People’s Committee of Can Tho and the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV).

On August 20, the department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in collaboration with Quang Ngai city People’s Committee and Tinh Khe commune organized an incense-offering ceremony at the Truong Dinh temple to commemorate the 151st death anniversary of national hero Truong Dinh (August 20, 1864 – August 20, 2014).
National hero Truong Dinh was born in 1820 in Tu Cung hamlet, Tinh Khe Commune, Son Tinh district (now Quang Ngai city), Quang Ngai Province. In 1844 he followed his father and moved southward to Long An and Tien Giang provinces where he gathered poor farmers and peasants into groups to combat the plantation French troops.
He had led several movements struggling against the French colonialists’ invasion for six years, won many glorious feats of arms and was honored as ‘Binh Tay Dai nguyen soai’ (the Binh Tay Marshal).
In a battle on August 20, 1864 he killed himself with his sword to avoid being captured by the enemy. He was only 44 years old. He was buried in Go Cong town, Tien Giang province, and ever since his death anniversary has been commemorated annually by local people in a sacred ceremony.
In his home village – Go Cong town and Gia Thuan commune in Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province, the ceremony for his commemoration is also organized on August 20 every year.

Vietnamese website fined for publishing film inspired by horrible massacre
A local website has been fined for broadcasting a film made by an amateur based on the <a href="#http://bit.ly/1JyX5Ie">massacre</a> of six family members in the southern province of Binh Phuoc.
The operator of the site was required to pay VND25 million (US$1,116) for publishing the 22-minute film “Tham Sat So 6″ (Massacre Number 6), inspired by the brutal murder of six people in a wood magnate’s family in Binh Phuoc last month.
The film, which was considered offensive and inciting, has been removed from the website, as requested by officials from the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on August 18.
The Vietnamese Central Council on Film Evaluation and the Cinematography Agency held a meeting on August 14 to evaluate the short film and concluded that it simulated the massacre in Binh Phuoc, incited violence, and featured inhumane characters performing cruel and offensive acts of murder.
“Tham Sat So 6″ has been completely banned in all forms, as it violates the country’s cinema law, while all people participating in the production and distribution process will also be fined, according to the Cinematography Agency.
The 22-minute film was released in early August, one month after the slaughter of the six people in Binh Phuoc. It describes the whole story which led to the terrible crime that shocked the entire country.
T.P., 21, who produced the film and played Nguyen Hai Duong, the main character, who was arrested in real life along with two accomplices for allegedly killing the six people, said that he dreams of becoming an artist.
In a conversation with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters, T.P. innocently said he did not think the film was offensive as he only wanted to advise people not to perform cruel acts of murder.
T.P. added that he had even eliminated many real details from the film.
Le Van My, 48, a wood processing magnate, his 42-year-old wife, Nguyen Le Thi Anh Nga, and their two children and two relatives were found dead inside their villa in Chon Thanh District at 7:00 am on July 7, while his youngest daughter, aged 18 months, survived the tragedy.
<a href="#http://bit.ly/1NLhgQT">Two suspects</a>, including Nguyen Hai Duong, hailing from the southern province of An Giang, and Vu Van Tien, a Binh Phuoc resident, were captured only four days after the massacre.
On August 10, Tran Dinh Thoai, 27, identified as <a href="#http://bit.ly/1JyX72S">the third suspect</a> in the bloodbath, was nabbed by Binh Phuoc police in an outlying area of Ho Chi Minh City.
Thoai is considered a suspect because he agreed to be Duong’s accomplice but eventually could not join him in carrying out the murder plot due to some unexpected, objective reasons, according to a source close to Tuoi Tre with knowledge of the matter.
He is thus facing charges of murder and robbery instead of “failing to report criminals,” the source said.

(TITC) – From Sept. 24 – 29, the Culture and Tourism Week of Mu Cang Chai terraced field 2015 will take place under the theme “Golden Season on Mountains”.
The event aims to celebrate the 58th anniversary of the establishment of Mu Cang Chai District (October 18) as well as to introduce the beauty of Mu Cang Chai terraced field, local people, culture and tourism potential to domestic and international visitors.
In the framework of event, there will be many activities to be held such as photo exhibitions, traditional market, film screenings, folk games… In addition, ecotourism and community-based tours to tourist attractions in the district will also be offered at the festival.
This is a chance to raise local people’s awareness in preservation and promotion of ethnic minority groups’ cultural values to develop tourism.

More ways needed to fully tap Son Tra Peninsula’s tourism potential
The Prime Minister has approved a master plan for developing Da Nang’s Son Tra Peninsula into a national tourism area. This decision will help to promote the tourism development of the peninsula, as well as diversify the local tourism products and help the city’s tourism improve its position as a local spearhead economic sector.
Many domestic and foreign visitors have unforgettable memories of their trips to the peninsular as they discovered red-shanked douc langurs and the thousand-year-old banyan tree, stayed in high-class holiday resorts, dived to explore the coral reefs, or took part in numerous beach sports and other interesting activities.
According to the Management Board of the Son Tra Peninsula and Tourism Beaches, the number of visitors to the peninsula reached 650,000 over the first half of this year. Of these, over 600,000 visited the Linh Ung Pagoda and the thousand-year-old banyan tree, whilst 7,500 discovered the underwater world of marine creatures.
According to local tourism experts, the peninsula is one of the city’s key tourist attractions boasting many types of tourism which satisfy a variety of visitor demands, especially holidays and eco-tourism tours.
Over recent years the Management Board have, on a trial basis, organised many famtrip tours for delegations wishing to survey the new tourism products on the peninsula. However, local travel agencies have not yet begun to organise tours around the peninsula in a sustainable manner.
The Song Hoi tourism company in Hoi An has been a pioneer of tours on the peninsula. The company’s Director, Mr Tran Hung, remarked that the peninsula’s special and diversified potentials of nature, culture, history and spiritual values have yet to be fully tapped. The company usually offers tours around the peninsula for around 100 cruise ship passengers every day during the peak tourism season. However, the number of visitors who make a return visit is still low.
In an effort to fully tap the peninsula’s tourism potential, the Management Board last year made plans to build more floating wooden rafts for anglers and a 1,000m2 transit station at the T-junction of Le Duc Tho and Hoang Sa streets, and to upgrade some of the rest-stops, like the viewing tower, the Ban Co (Chessboard) peak, and the Green Space area. However, some of these plans remain on the drawing board.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has collected ideas for a project that aims to encourage more reading among Vietnamese people – especially children. The project would cost about VND230 billion (US$10.2 million).
Under the draft version, the money will be spent on equipping facilities and buying books for local libraries.
A survey by the ministry shows that Vietnamese people only read one book per year on average. That average is about 12 in Western countries.

PANO – A scientific workshop “Tuyen Quang – the capital of the liberated zone in the August Revolution” took place in Tuyen Quang province on August 15th.
Memoirs delivered by delegates praised the importance of the 1945 August Revolution in the national history and affirmed that the revolution had resulted from the wise leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the combined strength of people from all walks of life.

The participants also highlighted the great decision of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh to choose Tuyen Quang as the resistance zone’s capital. During the August Revolution in 1945, Tuyen Quang was the capital of the liberated zone, where President Ho Chi Minh and the Party Central Committee lived and worked to lead the general uprising to wrest back power across the country and to lead the resistance war to a complete success.
Over the past time, the province has been bringing into play its traditions to promote socio-economic development and obtained considerable achievements.
* Previously, the Hanoi Department of Information and Communications mapped out an array of programs to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19th) and National Day (September 2nd).
Accordingly, seminars, exhibitions, contests, artistic performances in praise of the country’s major events as well as gratitude activities to pay tribute to those who had rendered good service to the cause for national salvation would be organized.

Special concert to celebrate National Day

th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (September 2). The concert, entitled the Autumn Melody, will be the largest-ever semi-classical symphonic musical event. It will feature a 200-strong choir and 100 musicians, including members of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and the Military University of Culture and Arts. It will also include renowned performers such as including player Bui Le Chi, violinist Bui Cong Duy and singers Quang Tho, Duong Minh Duc and Quang Huy. Conducted by Japan’s Honna Tetsuji, artists will perform typical pieces of Vietnam’s revolutionary music, taking an expected audience of 27,000 through the country’s glorious achievements during the revolutionary wars and national development.
The concert, held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, will be broadcast live on VOV’s National Assembly Channel, VOV and Nhan dan or People Television channel.

To train human resources for Nghi Son Oil Refinery

The Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited in collaboration with the Petrovietnam Manpower Training College opened the training program on human resources for Nghi Son Oil Refinery.
Accordingly, within 03 months, at Dung Quat Oil Refinery, 176 trainees will be trained and accustomed with the operation at the Dung Quat oil refinery as well as the central control room.
These trainees have been trained on the basic theory at the Petrovietnam Manpower Training College.
All trainees are required to learn and work a shift of 12 hours per day as employees of the Dung Quat oil refinery.
Earlier, the Dung Quat oil refinery also trained (phase 1) 140 workers and engineers for the Nghi Son Oil Refinery.
Under the signed agreement, the Dung Quat oil refinery will provide training courses for 600 workers and engineers that serve the operation of the Nghi Son oil refinery.

151st death anniversary of National Hero Truong Dinh

On August 20, the department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in collaboration with Quang Ngai city People’s Committee and Tinh Khe commune organized an incense-offering ceremony at the Truong Dinh temple to commemorate the 151st death anniversary of national hero Truong Dinh (August 20, 1864 – August 20, 2014).
National hero Truong Dinh was born in 1820 in Tu Cung hamlet, Tinh Khe Commune, Son Tinh district (now Quang Ngai city), Quang Ngai Province. In 1844 he followed his father and moved southward to Long An and Tien Giang provinces where he gathered poor farmers and peasants into groups to combat the plantation French troops.
He had led several movements struggling against the French colonialists’ invasion for six years, won many glorious feats of arms and was honored as ‘Binh Tay Dai nguyen soai’ (the Binh Tay Marshal).
In a battle on August 20, 1864 he killed himself with his sword to avoid being captured by the enemy. He was only 44 years old. He was buried in Go Cong town, Tien Giang province, and ever since his death anniversary has been commemorated annually by local people in a sacred ceremony.
In his home village – Go Cong town and Gia Thuan commune in Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province, the ceremony for his commemoration is also organized on August 20 every year.

Truc resoundingly defeated Akarsu Gizem of Turkey in the semi-final. She will meet Hanphan Rattanaphon of Thailand in the final on August 23.
However, Truc isn’t likely to play with her best level of fitness in the gold medal match, as she suffered a knee injury after the semi-final match.
At the World Martial Arts Council Games Thailand 2015 in March, Truc had won a gold medal in the women’s semi-professional 48kg category.
The Muaythai tournament, held under the auspices of the International Federation of Muaythai Amateurs, has attracted 2,000 fighters and officials from 102 countries. The tournament is being held at the National Stadium from August 13 to 23.
All gold medal winners in this international event will automatically qualify for the World Games 2017, which will be held under the patronage of the International Olympic Council.

Vietnamese website fined for publishing film inspired by horrible massacre

A local website has been fined for broadcasting a film made by an amateur based on the <a href="#http://bit.ly/1JyX5Ie">massacre</a> of six family members in the southern province of Binh Phuoc.
The operator of the site was required to pay VND25 million (US$1,116) for publishing the 22-minute film “Tham Sat So 6″ (Massacre Number 6), inspired by the brutal murder of six people in a wood magnate’s family in Binh Phuoc last month.
The film, which was considered offensive and inciting, has been removed from the website, as requested by officials from the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on August 18.
The Vietnamese Central Council on Film Evaluation and the Cinematography Agency held a meeting on August 14 to evaluate the short film and concluded that it simulated the massacre in Binh Phuoc, incited violence, and featured inhumane characters performing cruel and offensive acts of murder.
“Tham Sat So 6″ has been completely banned in all forms, as it violates the country’s cinema law, while all people participating in the production and distribution process will also be fined, according to the Cinematography Agency.
The 22-minute film was released in early August, one month after the slaughter of the six people in Binh Phuoc. It describes the whole story which led to the terrible crime that shocked the entire country.
T.P., 21, who produced the film and played Nguyen Hai Duong, the main character, who was arrested in real life along with two accomplices for allegedly killing the six people, said that he dreams of becoming an artist.
In a conversation with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters, T.P. innocently said he did not think the film was offensive as he only wanted to advise people not to perform cruel acts of murder.
T.P. added that he had even eliminated many real details from the film.
Le Van My, 48, a wood processing magnate, his 42-year-old wife, Nguyen Le Thi Anh Nga, and their two children and two relatives were found dead inside their villa in Chon Thanh District at 7:00 am on July 7, while his youngest daughter, aged 18 months, survived the tragedy.
<a href="#http://bit.ly/1NLhgQT">Two suspects</a>, including Nguyen Hai Duong, hailing from the southern province of An Giang, and Vu Van Tien, a Binh Phuoc resident, were captured only four days after the massacre.
On August 10, Tran Dinh Thoai, 27, identified as <a href="#http://bit.ly/1JyX72S">the third suspect</a> in the bloodbath, was nabbed by Binh Phuoc police in an outlying area of Ho Chi Minh City.
Thoai is considered a suspect because he agreed to be Duong’s accomplice but eventually could not join him in carrying out the murder plot due to some unexpected, objective reasons, according to a source close to Tuoi Tre with knowledge of the matter.
He is thus facing charges of murder and robbery instead of “failing to report criminals,” the source said.

In Vietnam, sponsors prefer amateur football tourneys to professional leagues

The organizer of an amateur football tournament in Hanoi has had to shortlist and curtail sponsors because there are not enough places for their advertisements, which is contrary to professional competitions that cannot find sponsorship.
The event is officially named ‘Hanoi Premier League – S3,’ the biggest tournament of grassroots football clubs in northern Vietnam. ‘S3’ refers to the third consecutive annual edition of the Hanoi league.
Introducing the S3 on August 19 at a press conference in a five-star hotel in the capital city, Vietfootball Company – the organizer of the league – confirmed that tens of sponsors had been denied by the firm.
They are ‘small sponsors’ who could commit merely VND10 million (US$455) each in sponsorship.
The organizer of the competition has never launched a marketing event to advertise the Hanoi league, according to Vietfootball.
Dang Ngoc Tuan, Vietfootball’s general director, said the S3 will be organized from September 6 to November 22 at C500 Stadium inside the Security Institute in Hanoi. The stadium can welcome around 5,000 people.
Tran Huy Duc, head of the competition unit under the Vietnam Football Federation, admitted that the ‘Hanoi Premier League – S3’ is the worthiest to watch this time in Vietnam.
The top professional football league of Vietnam, the V-League 1, has five more weeks to complete its 26 rounds.
The S3 has the participation of 12 amateur football teams to compete in one-way round robin format every Sunday.
The winning team will get VND30 million ($1,360) and the two followers will be awarded VND20 million and VND10 million respectively.
However, the biggest prize for players of the teams is the chance and joy of playing ‘pure football’ amid the applause of thousands of fans on weekends after work.

Top Vietnamese tennis player Ly Hoang Nam qualified for the Egypt F27 Men’s Futures quarterfinals after overcoming Silverman Cameron of the United States 2-0 in their second-round meeting on August 20.
Nam, rated 1,317th in the ATP rankings, entered the match comfortably with his confidence strongly boosted by a 2-0 win over Italian Edoardo Eremin, the tournament’s third seed with an ATP ranking of 470, in the first round the previous day.
Despite the extremely sunny weather in Egypt, the Vietnamese star continued writing his fairy tale finishing off Cameron, sitting at 1,082nd position in the world, in two sets of 6-3 and 6-0.

LONDON: Liverpool midfielder James Milner claims Monday’s clash with Arsenal is the perfect opportunity to test his side’s improvement since last season.
Brendan Rodgers’ team have been widely written off as also-rans in this season’s title race after limping to a sixth place finish that saw the Reds trail in 25 points behind champions Chelsea last term.
The departure of star forward Raheem Sterling to Manchester City and the continued fitness problems of England striker Daniel Sturridge have also played a role in Liverpool’s low approval rating.
But the Reds have made a quietly encouraging start and head to the Emirates stadium in third place after grinding out 1-0 wins over Stoke and Bournemouth.
Arsenal slumped to a 2-0 home defeat against West Ham before getting back on track with a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.
And Milner, a close-season signing from Manchester City, believes Liverpool will get the kind of stern examination in north London that should indicate how much they need to improve to challenge for the title.
“They look sharp,” Milner said. “They had a disappointing result in their first game against West Ham but they are a quality team and will want to bounce back from that and try to get their run going.”
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is a doubt for the Arsenal game due to a foot injury.
Rocked by their surprise loss to West Ham, Arsenal looked more composed and clinical against Palace and German defender Per Mertesacker has revealed how clear-the-air talks helped them kick-start their campaign.
“Obviously when everything goes very smooth in pre-season, you avoid those talks. But there was a need for it when we came out of the (West Ham) match,” he said.
“You could already feel something when you are in the relegation zone, and not having produced what everyone expected from you, so it was important to bounce back. Against Palace it was a very encouraging performance from top to bottom.”
Lacklustre
Arsenal’s early inconsistency is nothing in comparison to the dismal start made by Chelsea, who have endured their worst opening for 17 years after a 2-2 draw against Swansea and then a 3-0 thrashing at Manchester City.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho has acted swiftly by signing Pedro Rodriguez – the Barcelona winger who ignored Manchester United’s interest to move to Stamford Bridge – and Ghana left-back Baba Rahman from Augsburg.
With Pedro and Rahman potentially in line for debuts at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic has no doubts his team will soon bounce back from lacklustre opening he blames on the earlier than usual start to the season.
The kick off was moved to Aug 8 to give England manager Roy Hodgson extra time to prepare his side for Euro 2016.
“Those 10 days in terms of preparation between what we did last year and this year make a difference and is maybe a problem,” Matic said. “This is football. We have to cope with that. I feel in training that everyone is hungry, everyone wants to win the title. We know what we have to do.”
Early pace setters Manchester City will look to maintain their 100 per cent record when the leaders travel to Everton on Sunday.
Fourth placed Manchester United, who host Newcastle on Saturday, have also won their first two fixtures, as well as defeating Club Brugge in a midweek Champions League play-off first leg tie.
None of those matches featured a goal from captain Wayne Rooney, but the England striker is confident of getting off the mark soon.
“It’s early on in the season. I’ve experienced this (criticism) before and the goals will come, I know that,” Rooney said. “I understand I have to be the one who’s going to lead that line and try and find the goals for us.”

August Revolution’s 70th anniversary marked in Hanoi

The Hanoitimes – The Hanoi Party Committee hosted a meeting on August 19 to mark the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution.
In his speech, Municipal Party Secretary Pham Quang Nghi expressed deep gratitude to revolutionary veterans, heroic mothers, war martyrs and invalids, and revolutionary contributors for their sacrifices for national construction and defense.

He attributed the success of the revolution to the staunchness of the Vietnamese people and the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) led by President Ho Chi Minh.
“With pride and faith in the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, the Party committee, government, Fatherland Front, and people of Hanoi will continue to be united and boost our renewal, industrialization, and modernization to develop a capital city with rapid and sustainable growth,” he said.
The same day, the Vanguard newspaper and the Vietnam Youth Union held a workshop during which delegates agreed that the August Revolution was a glorious moment in Vietnam’s history.
The Ho Chi Minh Museum in Gia Lai and Kon Tum provinces hosted an exhibition featuring the 79 signatures of President Ho Chi Minh between 1945 and 1969.
A collection of 79 poems about President Ho Chi Minh was also featured at the event.
To mark the occasion, major newspapers covered the significance of the August Revolution on Wednesday to mark its 70th anniversary on August 19.
The front page of the People’s daily newspaper quoted President Ho Chi Minh’s comment as saying that “The August Revolution smashed colonialism after nearly one hundred years, and established the Democratic Republic of Vietnam”.
The newspaper said the August Revolution is always a great motivation and a source of spiritual encouragement for Vietnamese people to move forward.
The People’s Army newspaper ran an editorial and an article on bringing into full play the August Revolution’s spirit in the renewal process.
The stories analyzed reasons and lessons learnt from the victory of the August Revolution saying that it is necessary to revive the spirit of the August Revolution in the context of national renewal process. Meanwhile, the Sai Gon Liberated newspaper said the victory of the August Revolution is evidence of the role and power of the people and national unity.
Hanoi’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism held various activities to honor revolutionary traditions as well as achievements of Vietnam’s renewal process and of the capital city over the past 70 years.
Central Quang Binh province organized an exhibition on documents, newspapers and magazines on the general uprising in August 1945, the foundation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh in national liberation, construction and defence.

Vietnam’s short-distance runner gets set for Beijing test

Short-distance runner Nguyen Thi Huyen will leave for Beijing, China, on August 21 to compete in the Women’s 400m hurdles at the 2015 IAAF World Athletics Championships.
The 22-year-old girl from Nam Dinh province is the only Vietnamese athlete to show at the event.
“Huyen hasn’t fully recovered from a knee injury. So she has to both train and take care of her injury, but I hope she will have a great result in China,” said coach Vu Ngoc Loi.
Huyen is the second Vietnamese runner to compete at a world athletics tournament.
In 2011, Truong Thanh Hang was the first Vietnamese to compete in the event but she failed to make it to the final in the women’s 800m event.
According to Loi, Huyen had an outstanding performance in the 400m event at the recent 2015 Asian Grand Prix series in Thailand where she took two gold medals. However, Huyen won’t compete in this category in China.
“We want Huyen to invest in doing well in one key event rather than many,” Loi explained.
She continued her star performance at the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in June, winning two individual and one team gold medals for Vietnam, which secured her a berth at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.
She won the women’s 400m hurdles final with a best time of 56.15 seconds, breaking the 20-year Games’ record of 56.78 set by Thailand’s Srithoa Reawadee.
She also dashed to the top in the women’s 400m event, clocking a final time of 52.00, which smashed the Games record and met 2016 Olympic standards for this event.
The IAAF tournament will be the largest sporting event to take place at the Beijing National Stadium since the 2008 Summer Olympics.
The competition will start on August 22 and will attract some 2,000 athletes from over 200 countries and territories.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has collected ideas for a project that aims to encourage more reading among Vietnamese people – especially children. The project would cost about VND230 billion (US$10.2 million).
Under the draft version, the money will be spent on equipping facilities and buying books for local libraries.
A survey by the ministry shows that Vietnamese people only read one book per year on average. That average is about 12 in Western countries.

What makes one become a book-lover?

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has collected ideas for a project that aims to encourage more reading among Vietnamese people – especially children. The project would cost about VND230 billion (US$10.2 million).
Under the draft version, the money will be spent on equipping facilities and buying books for local libraries.
A survey by the ministry shows that Vietnamese people only read one book per year on average. That average is about 12 in Western countries.

HCM CITY (VNS) — Truong Nguyen Thanh Nhan won the overall yellow jersey of the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta Cycling Tournament which ended in the southern province of Ben Tre yesterday.
Nhan of VUS-HCM City won the event’s most wanted award for the best overall time of 23:12.55 after eight stages.
Tang Chi Hung from ADC-Vinh Long Television and Tran Le Minh Tuan from Military Zone 7 were runners-up.
Nguyen Thanh Tam of An Giang’s Gao Hat Ngoc Troi won the green jersey as the best sprinter with 133 points. While Nguyen Minh Viet of BTV Binh Duong won the white jersey as the best young cyclist.
In the team’s rankings, Domesco Pharmacy’s Dong Thap triumphed after eight stages, followed by VUS-HCM City and ADC-Vinh Long Television.
The 1,038km eight stage event attracted nearly 150 cyclists from 18 teams across the country. — VNS

HA NOI (VNS) — The national U19 men’s team left for Laos yesterday with their eyes set on the 2015 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U19 Youth Championship trophy.
Coach Hoang Anh Tuan said that in preparation for the event, which starts tomorrow, the team practised for more than a month. Tuan then selected the 25 best players from the training session.
Notably, the coach called on midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai of Ha Noi Club, even though Hai wasn’t part of the 30-member training team. Hai played impressively in the Ha Noi jersey at the recent National First Division Football Tournament and caught the coach’s eye.
Tuan also called on eight players from the PVF professional football centre, including goalkeeper Nguyen Thanh Tuan, midfielder Mac Duc Viet and strikers Ha Duc Chinh and Ho Minh Di.
Hoang Anh Gia Lai club contributed three midfielders Tran Thanh Son, Luong Hoang Nam and Phan Thanh Hau.
The coach believes with their physical strength and technique, Viet Nam will shine in Laos.
“My players come from various clubs but they fall in line with each other quickly. The team’s way of playing has actively changed. I also focused on enhancing physical strength. I believe the team will have a good result in Laos,” said Tuan who earned an AFC certificate and has received special training in India and Switzerland.
This is the 12th year of the championship and is hosted in Laos for the first time after its original host Indonesia was suspended by FIFA in May.
All 12 members of the AFF were set to take part in the tournament, but with Indonesia’s suspension, the AFF reverted the tourney to two groups of six and five teams.
Viet Nam are in Group B alongside Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Singapore and Malaysia. Group A includes host Laos, Thailand, Australia, Brunei, the Philippines and Cambodia.
Viet Nam’s key rival in Group B will be Myanmar, a team that already earned a ticket to compete in this year’s World U20 Championship.
Viet Nam won silver medals at the event in both 2013 and 2014. — VNS

Various activities to celebrate 70 years for traditional day of culture

The meeting to celebrate 70 years for Traditional Day of Culture and the sencond congress of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will take place on Augsut 22 at the Hanoi Opera House.
The concert ” Autumn melodies” will take place on August 26 in My Dinh stadium in Hanoi. It is the first time that Vietnam Orchestra Symphony performs at the stadium. The concert will cover various art genres such as symphony orchestra, ensemble music, dance and vocal music. The festival attracts some professional artists until now, which contributes and devotes a development of Vietnamese and international arts as well as gains some achievements at the competition. The program will consist of some songs of war, renewal and construction of the country in integration and develop of 70 years. In particular, the program is a part to honor some masterpieces by Beethoven, Brahms and Bach with the participation of top-notch international violinist Stephane Tran Ngoc from France and under the baton of overseas Vietnamese conductor Le Phi Phi from Macedonia.
Socio-economic achievement exhibition 2015 with the topic of “Reform, Integration and Development” is one of some activities to welcome the 70th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2). The 15,000-square-metre exhibit sprawling both indoors and outdoors will present outstanding socio-economic achievements under the leadership of the Party and State over the past 70 years, stretching over four display sections represented by ministries, agencies, localities and businesses.
The exhibition will focus on introducing and honoring Communist Party of Viet Nam and President Ho Chi Minh; the position of Viet Nam in the globalization context; typical socio-economic achievements; potential and advantages of tourism development of Viet Nam; materials, images on the maritime borders protection; national socio-economic development strategy until 2020 and vision to 2030; socio-economic achievements of the country in all fields under the leadership of the Party and State. Ha Noi will join the exhibition with a display area of 150-200m2.
Side events will include a seminar, music performances and publicity campaigns that will enable exhibitors to introduce investment opportunities, new policies and products. On the occasion of the 70th founding anniversary of the cultural sector (August 28), the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also asked the provincial and municipal Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism to hold exhibitions featuring its history and achievements since its inception in museums and relic sites nationwide this month.
The secind congress consists of propagandizing to introduce some great achievements of the industry; develop some fields of culture, sports and tourism; adjusting stele of historical relic sites; film-making to celebrate 70 years for traditional day of culture and organizing free entrances for some museums.

Swiss, US probes into FIFA unlikely to disrupt 2018 Russia World Cup – sources

American and Swiss criminal investigations into corruption in global soccer are unlikely to lead to any threat to Russia retaining the hosting rights for the 2018 World Cup, according to U.S. and European sources familiar with the probes.
Prosecutors in New York and Zurich are examining whether there were irregularities in the awarding of the rights to hold that tournament and the 2022 competition, which went to Qatar. The executive committee of global soccer’s governing body, FIFA, made the decisions in 2010.
The review of those decisions is part of a wider investigation into FIFA and its affiliates that led to the indictment in May of nine soccer officials, including several people who had served on the FIFA executive committee, and five business executives. They are all charged with various corruption-related offences, including money laundering and wire fraud.
But Swiss officials do not expect their continuing investigation of FIFA will come up with the kind of evidence of wrongdoing that would force the Zurich-based body to reconsider holding the 2018 competition in Russia, the sources said. This is particularly the case given there is now less than three years to go before the tournament, making a switch to another country potentially a logistical nightmare.
The Russian part of the probe has been particularly difficult because the computers used by its World Cup bid committee appear to have been destroyed, which means that many documents have not been available to investigators.
In a statement in response to questions from Reuters, the media office of the Russia 2018 local organizing committee, said that the computers and other equipment had been leased by the bid team, and once the process was over it had returned them to their owner. “The computers became obsolete and were discarded by their owner,” it said.
The committee also said that the Russian bid was successful because of “the excellence of the concept” presented. The bid team, it said, had all along insisted on transparency and international best practice in governance. It always operated “in full compliance with the spirit and letter of FIFA’s Code of Ethics.”
The committee also said that it would cooperate with any relevant authorities.
Among those who have suggested that the World Cups could be taken away from Russia and Qatar if there is evidence of bribes being paid in the bidding process is Domenico Scala, the independent chairman of FIFA’s audit and compliance committee and the official put in charge of overseeing FIFA reform efforts. However, FIFA itself has said that it has no legal grounds to do that.
The Russian government and soccer officials have suggested previously that the investigations are the result of sour grapes by major Western powers whose bids failed. England was unsuccessful in its bid for the 2018 tournament and the U.S. in its bid for 2022.
In the U.S., the FBI and federal prosecutors in New York are continuing their own investigations into alleged FIFA-related corruption, including examining how Russia was successful in its bid for the 2018 World Cup, sources said.
A New York-based FBI squad which specializes in investigating Russian organized crime has now been looking into FIFA and soccer-related corruption for four-and-a-half years.
Any Russian involvement in soccer corruption, including the World Cup bidding, remains a key focus of the FBI inquiry, one of the sources familiar with investigations said. However, FBI investigators do not believe that prompting FIFA to reconsider whether to hold the competition in Russia is, or should be, a goal of their investigation.
The same stumbling blocks are not there in the investigation into Qatar’s successful bid as there are more documents available to investigators and that World Cup is still seven years away, the sources said.
Prosecutors based in Brooklyn, New York, who are leading the U.S. investigation, declined to comment.
Swiss authorities, led by the country’s Attorney General, Michael Lauber, have said publicly that they are investigating possible money laundering and disloyal management in FIFA, including in the awarding of the two World Cups. The disloyal management focus is a reference to provisions in Swiss law under which managers can be held criminally liable if they violate their duties or cause or permit damage to an entity.
A German judge hired by FIFA to review its own investigation of allegations of irregularities in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup awards reported in November 2014 that Russia had only made available a “limited amount of documents” to an investigator hired by FIFA.

Quang Ninh’s Department of Information and Communications told the Daily on August 20 that the relocation from Bai Chay Port to Tuan Chau was scheduled for completion before the end of this year and that Bai Chay Port would be closed before the peak summer travel season in 2016.
Earlier, the Vietnam Maritime Administration (VMA) issued a decision allowing Tuan Chau habor to handle local and international passengers and cruise ships in Halong Bay from July 28.
Located in the southeast of Tuan Chau Island in Halong City and developed by Au Lac Co. Ltd., the international tourist harbor has one 1,443-meter-long pier and one 4,411-meter-long pier able to handle huge vessels.
The VMA requested the Quang Ninh Port Authority to oversee the port to ensure maritime safety and environmental protection as well as fee collections in line with the current regulations.
A number of tour operators have hailed the relocation of tourist boats to the new venue as it has better infrastructure than at Bai Chay Port such as large waiting lounges and floating facilities for easy access and exit. The new harbor is convenient for visitors traveling from Hanoi.
However, Asian Trails Co. CEO Bui Viet Thuy Tien said more piers should be built at Tuan Chau harbor as the venue could be soon overloaded when hundreds of boats from Bai Chay flock there.
Vu Duy Vu, deputy general director of Saigontourist Travel Service Company, said the new place would cost passengers of cruise ships more time and money as many big cruise ships cannot pass under the Bai Chay Bridge to enter the Halong Bay and must anchor near the bridge for smaller boats to transport passengers to the bay.
However, Vu said a single boat trip between cruise ships anchoring near the bridge and Tuan Chau harbor could be 45 minutes.
