Ministry honors best coaches and athletes at 28th SEA Games Related image(s)

(CPV) – The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on June 23rd organized a meeting in Hanoi to honor the best coaches and athletes who just performing at 28th SEA Games in Singapore.

According to Mr Tran Duc Phan, Deputy head of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training cum head of the Vietnamese sports delegation, the 570-member delegation consisted of 392 of the country’s most outstanding athletes competing in 268/402 categories of 28/36 events. The country pocketed 73 gold, 53 silver and 60 bronze medals, settling for third place in the overall medal standings.

Vietnamese athletes set 13 Games records including 10 from swimming team and three from athletics team.

The swimming team took home 10 gold medals, the second largest number of golds won, with “little mermaid” 19-year-old Nguyen Thi Anh Vien taking centre stage in both the domestic and international media with eight individual golds and eight new SEA Games records. She carved her name into the SEA Games history as the athlete to win the most individual gold medals, surpassing Singaporean athletes, Jescelin Yeo and Tao Li, who blasted seven each in 1993 and 2011, respectively. The Can Tho city – original swimmer has been selected as the best foreign athlete this year’s tour.

The 28th SEA Games was a positive sign for Vietnamese sports as over two thirds of its gold medals won this year came from 12 Olympics events.

On behalf of the State President, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh conferred two 2nd medals of Labor to female swimmer “Cetus” Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and the most anticipated Vietnamese gymnast Phan Thi Ha Thanh for their outstanding results at the event.

Besides, 25 coaches and athletes were also awarded the 3rd medal of Labor./.
