USAID project to grow commercial market against HIV in Vietnam

(VOV) – The US Agency for International Development (USAID) officially kicked off a US$15 million project in HCM City on October 30 to encourage private health-related goods and services for HIV prevention and control.

The project will leverage private-sector solutions, expertise, interests, and assets to identify market opportunities and catalyze market responses to the HIV epidemic. The project will support a phased transition from an environment where condoms and other related HIV prevention goods and services are predominantly subsidized, to one where non-subsidized commodities, services and distribution channels are the norm.

To create a modern marketplace for HIV-related goods and services, the project will explore new markets with manufacturers, create opportunities for new distribution channels, and increase demand among key populations – injecting drug users, female sex workers and men who have sex with men.

At the ceremony, Dr. Ariel Pablos-Méndez, the Assistant Administrator for Global Health at USAID said the body has committed to to develop a more sustainable response to the HIV epidemic to improve people’s health in Vietnam. The project aims to grow a viable commercial market for HIV-related goods and services capable of meeting the needs of populations facing the greatest risks.

Meanwhile, Vo Tan Thanh, Director of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), Ho Chi Minh City branch emphasized that local businesses can participate in different components of the project as producer, supplier, distributor and retailer.

The five-year project will be implemented by PATH – an international nonprofit organisation and the Centre for Creative Initiatives in Health and Population (CCIHP).
