Dozens of flights to and from Tan Son Nhat were delayed on Wednesday and the holiday travel reached its peak, putting the airport’s runways under unprecedented strain that can last through this weekend.

A report from the Ho Chi Minh City airport listed 33 flights that had to land between 15 and 50 minutes behind schedule, and 44 flights that had to leave the airport 15 minutes to one hour later on Wednesday.

The total number of flights has increased 17.8 percent compared to the holiday season last year to 686 as of Wednesday while the number of passengers surged nearly 19 percent, the airport said.

Representatives from the three local carriers Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air and Jetstar Pacific said busy flight schedule has caused traffic jams at the airport.

They said they have cooperated with the airport managers to prevent delays, but the infrastructure has been overloaded with more than 100,000 passengers on a single day.

The airport was designed to serve 13 million travelers in the domestic terminal and 10 million in the international terminal every year, but the number in 2015 exceeded 26.5 million.
