A tropical storm that has formed to the east of the central Philippines is moving towards Luzon Island. The storm will sweep across the island before entering the East Vietnam Sea early on Monday, the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned Saturday.
The storm’s international name is Kalmaegi, which was chose by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the center said.
At 7 am this morning, September 13, the storm was 480 km east of the Central Philippines, packing winds of 89-102 kph and gusts of up to 133 kph.
The storm is moving west northwest at 15-20 kph and is expected to strengthen.
At 1 am on Sunday, the storm will be located about 400 km east of the Philippines’s Luzon Island, with maximum winds of 102 kph and gusts of up to 149 kph.
The storm will continue moving at the same speed, and at 7 am Monday, September 15, it will lie over the northwestern part of Luzon Island, about 840 km east northeast of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracels) archipelago, with winds of 133 kph and gusts of 183 kph.
The storm will continue moving west-northwest at 20 kph, and then enter the East Vietnam Sea, the center said.
The agency warned that the storm may be difficult to forecast, adding that it is closely monitoring its movements.
