- Typhoon Rammasun heads towards Nam Dinh and Haiphong
- Resident evacuation plan afoot as Rammasun nears
At 07.00 on July 18 the typhoon was 570km south east of Quang Ninh province, packing winds of up to 183km/h near its centre.
Rammasun, which is travelling north west at a speed of 20km/h, is forecast to enter the Bac Bo (Tonkin) Gulf in the evening and slam the northern coast early on July 19.
Moving inland, the typhoon will trigger heavy downpours of up to 200-300mm, flooding low-lying areas in capital Hanoi, Haiphong, Thai Binh, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Ha Nam and Nam Dinh.
Heavy downpours will cause water levels in the major river systems in the north to rise to the second or even above the third alert levels.
Weather experts warned mountainous localities of possible mudslides and flash floods.
Vietnam Airlines on July 17 announced that it had delayed more than 20 flights during the day due to Rammasun.
Between 08.00-11.00am alone, torrential rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning directly affected 16 flights coming in and from Hanoi, including 13 domestic flights and three others to Moscow (Russia), Shanghai (China) and Vientiane (Laos).
A fishing ban was released on July 17 for fishermen along the central-northern coastal provinces to ensure their lives and protect property.
The government has asked for an evacuation of residents in the low-lying and flood-prone areas to be completed before 16.00pm on July 18.
