Doctor couple dies in traffic accident in southern Vietnam

Four people, including a pair of doctors, died in a traffic accident in the Mekong Delta province of Long An on Monday after their car lost control and plunged into a wet rice paddy on the side of the road.


The accident happened at around 6 am on National Road 62 as the car was traveling from Kien Tuong to Tan An Town, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.


The four victims included a pair of doctors, Dang Chi Dong Giang and Pham Thi Ngoc Lien, Giang’s sister Dang Thi Tuyet Trinh and the driver, Nguyen Dinh Thi.



According to witnesses, the sedan lost control and flipped several times in the rice paddy.


Four people could not escape from the wreck and drowned.


Police are investigating the cause of accident.


In related news, one driver died and another was seriously injured when a truck hit a bus traveling in the opposite direction at around 1:40 am on Monday while traveling through the coastal province of Khanh Hoa on National Highway 1A.


The truck driver, 30-year-old Nguyen Van Duy, died of multiple injuries on the way to the hospital while the bus driver Nguyen Van Minh, 42, sustained a broken pelvis, a broken thigh and foot. Luckily, his 22 passengers were not injured.


Police say the bus had crossed into the truck’s lane when the accident happened.


According to the central Road Traffic Police Department, there were 12,855 traffic accidents nationwide in the first half of this year, 4,588 fatalities and 12,821 injuries.
