Vietnam ends worker evacuation operation in Libya

(VOV) – As of September 21 the Vietnamese government has successfully evacuated most of its 1,763guest workers trapped amidst the escalating conflict in war torn Libya, returning them safely to the homeland.

Pham Viet Huong, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA)’s Department for Overseas Labour Management (DOLM), made the announcement saying 1,758 Vietnamese guest workers have now escaped the violence plaguing this North African nation.

Compared to the 2011 repatriation of workers, this time the task was much more precarious as the government had to contend with some employers who disagreed with the decision to permit their employees to flee homes. In addition, evacuees did not receive as much assistance from international organisations as in 2011.

However, thanks to the perseverance and collaborative efforts of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, relevant agencies and businesses, the mission to evacuate more than 1,700 from Libya has been a success. The MOLISA provided VND1-7.5 million in financial aid for each of the returnees depending on their careers and length of stay.

Huong said two workers in Misrata – 250km from Tripoli – were ardent in their desire to remain in Libya despite repeated attempts by families, businesses and embassy staff to persuade them to leave.

The MOLISA proposed the Vietnamese Embassy in Libya and businesses keep in close contact with the two workers to provide them with necessary support in case of emergency.

Three others remain missing as they ran away without leaving any information as to their whereabouts. The embassy worked to no avail with employers and local authorities to locate them.

The International Red Cross has been contacted for assistance in the search.
