(Cinet)- Phu Yen Provincial People’s Committee, the Board of Justice, the Direction Board of the Central Highland, Institute of Research and Development organized a scientific dialogue “Solutions to preserve Central Highlands culture” on May 24.
Some participants at the seminar reported that many unique cultural characteristics in the region are being undermined, such as communal rituals and activities, traditional values and traditional crafts. The communal bond has weakened and the role of village elders is diminishing.
The culture space of the Gongs of central Vietnam is about original musical forms, which are performed against the background of the linguistic and ethnic diversity of the region. Diversity is also found in the compositions and customs of the Gong ensembles, in their performance techniques, in the musical genres and in the ritual functions of the gongs. As for ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands, gongs and gong culture present a means to affirm the community and its cultural identities. As time went by, gongs have become an attractive and appealing symbol of the culture of the Central Highlands. It is an activity associated with cultural and spiritual life, and beliefs of ethnic people when they are born, grown up and return to the soil. In particular, the region’s gong cultural space was recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005.
At the dialogue, the official suggested combining tourism with the preservation of the region’s culture.
The Tay Nguyen region, which comprises five provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lam Dong, Gia Lai and Kon Tum, is said to be a land of mysterious mountains and forests with a significant population of ethnic minorities whose varied customs and lifestyles are an anthropologist’s delight.
Saying the event, Vu Ngoc Hoang, deputy head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Popularisation and Education tended to to preserve the local culture, especially preserving forests, which are a factor of decisive significance to Tay Nguyen’s economy and culture.
