Kien Giang aims to raise local living standards

The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang is making every effort to improve living conditions for its local people, especially those from ethnic groups.

From now to 2020, the locality will focus on promoting socio-economic development, building new-style rural areas and reducing poverty. It will also work to enhance cultural standards for local people as well as foster the development of the workforce.

Kien Giang has planned to arrange dwelling land and jobs for 2,740 households from ethnic minority groups in the 2013-2015 period.

Since 2006, the province has invested 580 billion VND (27.2 million) to build 14,000 houses and allocate dwelling land to 2,699 families and cultivation land to another 2,220. The locality has also provided employment for 10,810 local people.

The rate of poor households in ethnic minority areas is currently falling by an average rate of 2.5 percent per year. Up to 96 percent of the households in the areas have access to electricity, while 76 percent of them can use clean water. Meanwhile, 93 percent of the children from ethnic groups aged between 6-14 are attending school.-VNA
