Impacts of climate change on Vietnam’s World Heritage Sites

At present, there are 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Vietnam including Ha Long Bay, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Complex of Hue Monuments, Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary, Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long – Hanoi.

However, the recent study by Institute of Meteorology, Geology and Physics of Innsbruck University, Austria points out that almost all 7 sites have suffered from climate change, especially Complex of Hue Monuments.

Storms and flooding left rotten wood, damaged tiles and degraded Complex of Hue Monuments. In view of degradation problem, Hue Monuments Conservation Center reinforced foundation and embankment at damaged areas and structural frame by steel wires.

Addressed in the study of Innsbruck University, similar to Complex of Hue Monuments, such World Heritage Sites as the Statue of Liberty, London Tower and Sydney Opera House may disappear due to sea level rise if the temperature increases by 3 Celsius degree in the next two millenniums.
