Nhan Dan Online – The final span of Nhat Tan Bridge, Hanoi’s longest bridge (8.9km) crossing the Hong (Red) River was connected on the morning of April 15.

The bridge begins at Phu Thuong ward in Hanoi’s Tay Ho district and ends at the intersection at Nam Hong road in Dong Anh outskirts district.

Nhat Tan Bridge – 33.2 metres wide and eight lanes wide – required a total investment of over VND13.6 trillion (US$639.2 million), which came from Japanese official development assistance and the State budget.

The bridge is one of the seven bridges in Hanoi spanning the Hong River, and is designed as a cable-stayed bridge including five arched towers symbolising the five gates of the city.

Addressing the span closure ceremony, Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam, Hiroshi Fukada emphasised that Nhat Tan Bridge will be the symbol of the friendly relations between Vietnam and Japan. He also expressed his hope that with the co-operation of the Vietnamese Government, other Japan-funded projects will prove more effective in the future.

Construction of the bridge was commenced in 2009 as one of the major transport projects in Hanoi which helps connect the inner city with industrial zones in the north and shorten the distance to Noi Bai International Airport.

To date, 90% of the bridge has been completed and it is scheduled to begin operation in October 2014.
