Nhan Dan Online – A symposium was held this morning in the central coastal city of Da Nang with a focus on tabling relevant policies and measures to promote the fisheries development in a more sustainable and effective manner.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat and leaders of coastal localities with fishing from across the country.

Vietnam’s fisheries have seen rapid and stable growth over the past few years and the sector has become a spearhead industry, with significant contributions to the national economy, Minister Phat said.

He reported that the country’s total fisheries output has reached six million tonnes so far, with aquaculture accounting for 54.2%, while total labour working in this sector has been estimated at more than 4.5 million people. Fifty fishing unions were established across the country and put into operation.

He also pointed out the sector’s shortcomings regarding the low quality of fishing boats, outdated technical infrastructure for fish farming and limited ability to prevent and combat diseases in aquaculture.

Phat proposed some recommendations to promote the sustainable development of Vietnam’s fisheries, including provision of vocational training to fishermen, acceleration of offshore fishing and modernisation of fishing boats.

He suggested selecting seafood products of high competitiveness for aquaculture, such as tiger shrimp, white-legged shrimp and tra fish, shifting from raw processing to high-value products, diversifying processed products in line with the culture and taste of each market, boosting trade promotion to maintain traditional export markets and seeking new markets.

He also recommended that the government continue implementing policies to support fishermen operating on remote sea waters and help them deal with risks and natural disasters on sea, while prioritising preferential credit loans for fishermen to upgrade fishing infrastructure.
