Measures to ensure safety for laborers to be enhanced

At the conference, the delegates proposed solutions to improve quality and reduce labor accidents, occupational diseases, fires, and explosions in workplaces.

The Hai Duong provincial Labor Confederation on the morning of March 19 held the workshop “Improving the performance of trade unions, contributing to reducing labor accidents, occupational diseases, fires, and explosions (LA-OD-FE) in workplaces” with the participation of 30 delegates representing the leaders of a number of concerned agencies, boards, and branches, and trade unions of 12 districts, provincial town, city, and sectors in the province.

Hai Duong now has more than 6,700 enterprises, luring over 260,000 laborers. Beside the enterprises having cared about investing advanced equipment and technology in production, ensuring labor safety, there remain many medium- and small-sized firms currently using outdated equipment and technology, traditionally producing products, yet to ensure labor safety factors, resulting in potential risks of LA-OD-FE.

In 2013 alone, the province recorded 82 labor accidents, including nine particularly serious cases that killed 12 people, and 22 fires and explosions.

At the conference, the delegates focused on assessing the trade unions’ activities in the coordination with professional knowledge to diminish LA-OD-FE in workplaces and proposing solutions to improve quality and reduce LA-OD-FE in workplaces.

Some noteworthy solutions recommended levels of trade unions:

- to promote propaganda and mobilization of employers to organize laborers to participate in activities in response to the National Week on Labor Safety and Hygiene – Fire and Explosion Prevention, minimize LA-OD-FE in workplaces, and intensify measures to ensure safety for laborers;

- to frequently organize training, propagandizing LA-OD-FE prevention skills for laborers, concurrently raise their sense of discipline observance before, during, and after the production process;

- to regularly enhance the quality of the safety and hygiene staffs of enterprises, avoid formalistic activities.

Functional agencies should strengthen inspection, strictly handle violating units, etc.
