Thoi Son Islet
The small islet sits downstream on the Tien River, one of the two tributaries of the Mekong River in Vietnam, which the province is named after. Visitors can pay to take a boat ride under coconut canopies along canals that zigzag through the islet.

Vinh Trang Pagoda
This Buddhist pagoda is hidden in an orchard of nearly two hectares (4.9 acres) outside My Tho, the provincial capital. The scenic backdrop adds to the religious experience, and the pagoda combines Asian and European designs.

Flower village
The flower village in Man Dinh Hong is four kilometers (2.5 miles) to the west of My Tho. It is the main supplier of flowers and ornamental trees during the Lunar New Year in southern Vietnam. Several families have planted extra sunflowers and bachelor buttons to attract visitors, and charge VND30,000 ($1.32) for happy-snappers on a photo shoot.

Floating market
Around an hour to the west of My Tho is the Tien River. Cai Be, one the Mekong Delta’s iconic floating markets, opens early in the morning at around 5a.m.

You can either ride a motorbike, take a bus or rent a boat for between VND150,000-800,000 ($6.60-35) for a round trip. Most of the boats here sell fruit and vegetables picked fresh from local gardens.

Dong Hoa Hiep Commune in Cai Be District is home to nearly 40 houses that were built up to 200 years ago. Most of them are still furnished with unique decors and cooking sets that served as a symbol of wealth in southern Vietnam during colonial times.

This was unveiled at a conference to promote provincial tourism attended by local authorities and travel agents yesterday in Hà Nội.
 
Lùng Khúy Cave, Chiêu Lầu Thi Peak and Tu Sản Canyon are three attractive destinations to be presented to travellers, according to Đặng Quốc Sử, director of the Hà Giang Tourist Information and Promotion Centre.
 
Chiêu Lầu Thi is the second highest mountain in the province at 2,142m above sea level, Lùng Khúy is a newly-discovered cave with impressive stalactites, while Tu Sản Canyon is 800m deep and 1.8km long.
 
Some new tours will be offered including climbing, kayaking on the Nho Quế River and walking down Mã Pì Lèng Pass to Tu Sản Canyon.
 
“Hà Giang impresses visitors with its UNESCO Geopark Site – Đồng Văn Karst Plateau, steep hills, winding roads and the diversified culture of many ethnic groups,” Sử said.
 
“Provincial authorities pay special attention to promoting tourism as it is a key factor to develop the local economy sustainably and improve people’s living condition.”
 
The provincial Party Chief Triệu Tài Vinh said upgrading service quality and developing new tours is key.
 
“When I worked as head of Hà Giang’s Hoàng Su Phì District eight years ago, I rode a motorbike to visit all villages and communes and realised the landscape is spectacular but I didn’t know how to get tourists here because the infrastructure wasn’t developed, traffic was not convenient and locals didn’t know how to receive tourists,” said Vinh.
 
“Eight years later, everything has changed. Hà Giang is a stunning destination for both domestic and foreign tourists. Tourism is a key factor to develop the provincial economy.”
 
However, many attractive tourist areas haven’t been developed, he said.
 
“Through field trips, we acknowledged that tourists like to visit new and primary destinations that few people know about. That’s the reason why newly discovered caves and beauty spots are always attractive.”
 
“We prioritise promoting tourism as part of the development strategy of the province,” said Vinh.
 
“Developing tourism will be attached to preserving the local culture and identity, and protecting the environment.”
 
Trần Thế Dũng, vice director of Thế Hệ Trẻ Company from HCM City, has brought many tourists to Hà Giang in recent years.
 
He gave some suggestions to develop tourism such as using social networks, improving traffic to make roads to caves more accessible and opening tours connecting Hà Giang with Tuyên Quang, Cao Bằng and Bắc Kạn provinces to encourage tourists to stay longer.
 
“I also have some advice for foreign tourists to Hà Giang, they shouldn’t give money to the ethnic minority children, instead, I recommend that they organise charity trips.”
 
“To approach and understand the local culture, I advise tourists to adhere to the traditional customs of ethnic minority families when they visit, such as not talking loudly, not standing on the threshold of the house, not sitting with your backs facing the altars and not touching items on the altars or musical instruments inside the house.”
 
Dũng pointed out that foreigners need to obtain permits to enter border areas in Hà Giang and the process is time consuming. He suggested the process be done in Hà Nội to make it more convenient for foreign tourists.
 
During the conference, Hà Giang’s Tourism Association signed a memorandum of understanding to work with partners in Hà Nội, Nghệ An, Ninh Bình, Hải Phòng, Quảng Ninh and Thanh Hoá provinces. Accordingly, they will exchange experience and information in promoting tourism and hold training courses on tourism.
 
On the occasion, the provincial Department of the Culture, Sports and Tourism also introduced the publication Reliable Addresses of Hà Giang Tourism to honour excellent tourism businesses and help visitors find the best products in Hà Giang.
 
Hà Giang received 469,000 tourists, including 85,000 foreigners, in the first half of this year, 11.2 per cent more than the same period last year. The province aims to welcome 1.5 million tourists in 2020.
 
Takahashi Ayumi, head of Japan National Tourism Organisation in Việt Nam, said Hà Giang is an attractive destination to Japanese tourists and he expected that Vietnamese and Japanese partners will enhance co-operation in tourism.

The announcement aims to call for investment from enterprises to turn Ban Gioc waterfall tourist site into a key tourism site of the northern mountainous province and the nation, contributing to boosting the development of the province and the region.

Under the master plan, approved by the Prime Minister in April this year, the Ban Gioc waterfall tourist site will cover 1,000ha while the central area of the site will cover 156.7ha.

Facilities will be also built in the zone to serve tourism, including hotels and service areas.
The tourist site is expected to welcome approximately 750,000 visitors per year and have more than 1,000 rooms for tourists by 2020. By 2030, the tourist site is estimated to receive 1.2 million visitors and have some 1,750 rooms for visitors.

The central area of the Ban Gioc waterfall tourist site is set to have four areas including the Ban Gioc waterfall landscape, the landscape along the Quay Son River, the mountainous forestry landscape ecology and the agricultural landscape ecology.

Ban Gioc is in Dam Thuy commune, Trung Khanh district, on the border with China’s Guangxi province. It is 53 metres high and 300 metres wide and has three levels of smaller waterfalls.

The waterfall is the fourth largest border waterfall in the world and was named one of the ten most spectacular waterfalls in the world by travel site Touropia.

In 2016, the tourism site welcomed more than 178,000 visitors.

Mr Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, noted that “The top task of the tourism industry in the second half of this year is to exert all the strengths to achieve the growth of least 30 per cent and this cannot be a better time for the Vietnamese tourism industry to take wings to fly.” Therefore, in addition to maintaining the charisma of central and southern coastal tourist attractions, it is also very important to boost the competitiveness of northern upland tours during the autumn-winter season to achieve this growth target.

 
Diversified upland tours woo visitors 

National Day holidays will start the autumn-winter tourism season. Many have planned their travel for their families, with a majority opting out for short-day tours because they have 2-3 days off for this public holiday. In addition, there are many traditional festivals during this autumn – winter tourism season such as Mid-Autumn Full Moon Festival, Halloween, Christmas and New Year with many stimulus programmes. As a result, these tours catch the fancy of foreign travellers. Weather is very good during this season and tourists can have perfect conditions to explore, experience and contemplate the scenic landscape.

To serve the needs of tourists, many travel companies such as Vietravel, Saigontourist and Vietsense have launched autumn – winter tours. Mr Nguyen Van Tai, Director of Vietsense Travel Company, said, “In recent years, travelling uplands has become much more popular. For this reason, we have opened up 50 different tours to serve travellers. In addition, localities have launched many arts and cultural programmes such as festivals, arts performances, cuisine or visits to museums and specialty sale points to lure tourists.”

Upland tourist attractions include Sapa, Moc Chau, Dong Van, Meo Vac, Ban Gioc and Ba Be with terraced rice fields, white radish flower carpets or immense tea hills enchant countless visitors. In addition, hill-tribe indigenous cuisines, cultures, customs, habits and lifestyles are special lures to tourists.

Besides existing tourist areas, many new ones are also opened, including Tu Le, La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, Mu Cang Chai and Ta Xua to offer new choices for tourists. New destinations are advantageously pristine while local people are sincere and hospitable – the plus in the eyes of visitors.

Highland tour prices usually range from VND1 million to VND3 million, affordable to many people. Furthermore, airfares, train fares and hotel room rates are also much lower than those the peak tourism season.

Ha Phuong, a Hanoi tourist, said: “With only VND1.5 million, I had a great trip to discover the Thai people living in Moc Chau-Mai Chau. The accommodation and food were quite cheap while travelling fees were low. The scenery was stunning. The local people were honest and easy going. I’m very impressed and will come back there.”

With such charms, upland tours are expected to be the most attractive this autumn – winter tourism season. Therefore, as visitors intend to relax or explore the white buckwheat flowers in Ha Giang, white cabbage flowers in Moc Chau, Ban Gioc waterfall in Cao Bang, they should make early reservations and enjoy preferential policies from travel companies.

NDO/VNA – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has urged the aviation industry to tighten security and safety as they are important issues currently.

This requirement was one of six in a message from the Prime Minister sent to the aviation industry at the meeting between the Government working group led by Minister cum Head of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung and representatives of three aviation firms, including Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation and Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), in Hanoi on August 16.

The meeting aimed to urge the industry to boost business and production, contributing to hitting the country’s GDP growth target this year as well as discovering and solving difficulties. The businesses will then have to report and explain the problems to the Government and the PM.

In the message, PM Phuc said the industry has grown but has to ensure security and safety, seen as the most important issue.

The PM mentioned the importance of increasing the frequency of take offs and landings and said that many international airports had a frequency of two minutes per flight, or even one minute per flight.

Dung also questioned the plan to double the annual capacity of Tan Son Nhat International Airport from its current capacity of 25 million passengers when the airport has not been expanded and Long Thanh Airport, designed to be the country’s largest airport in the southern province of Dong Nai and about 40km far from HCM City, is yet to be constructed.

The third issue is ensuring the security of flight information. This is a key issue for ACV, which needs to have measures to stop cyber-attacks that delay flights.

Delayed and cancelled flights are another issue. In July, the on-time rate of Vietnam Airlines increased compared with previous years, but the number of delayed and cancelled flights of budget airlines was still high, which was due to infrastructure, technology or facilities, Dung asked participants at the meeting.

The industry had witnessed fierce competition, good development and enhanced quality but the delay and cancel of flights is a big public concern. Agencies need to pay attention and co-ordinate with each other to solve this problem.

The PM also mentioned aviation culture, efficiency and profit, especially of Vietnam Airlines. The firm’s revenue rose nearly 10% in the first months of this year, but after-tax profits did not increase in tandem.

Another issue is airport security. Dung questioned why some airports control security well and stop drug transportation but others can’t. He mentioned the mobilisation of social funds in aviation infrastructure.

The Ministry of Transport and the ACV should study the issue and devise measures.

The fifth issue is equitisation. The PM wanted the ACV to hasten its equitisation and divestment.

As for the sixth issue, he asked the industry to take every opportunity to maintain its annual growth rate of 17-20% in recent times.

The Government working group also asked the three businesses to report their difficulties in mechanisms and policies in detail. The group will collect and report the issues to the Government and the PM.

NDO – It cannot be denied that tourism promotion contributes significantly to the good growth of tourism of Vietnam’s tourism in recent years. However, the field is facing many difficulties due to low professionalism, limited funding.

Since the beginning of the year, Vietnam has welcomed nearly 7.5 million international visitors, up 29% over the same period last year. The total revenue from tourism was estimated at over VND307 trillion, up 26%. With this growth, Vietnam tourism industry is expected to achieve 30% growth in international visitor arrivals in 2017. In order to achieve growth in the past two years, other than simplifying immigration procedures for foreigners, diversifying and improving the quality of tourist products, strengthening management, and cleaning business environment, there is no small aspect when it comes to the tourism promotion of Vietnam.

With the investment of the tourism industry and the coordination of all related levels and branches, the promotion of tourism in Vietnam has been step by step changed and expanded the scale. Many programmes and events are held across the country and abroad. The programmes have introduced tourists to the image of Vietnam’s landscape, people and potentials, as well as tourism products, opened opportunities for investment cooperation, affirmed the position of tourism in the region and the world. Tourist promotion activities are also more and more diversified, taking full advantage of information technology.

Electronic marketing (E-marketing) via Internet has brought information on Vietnamese tourism to 340,000 viewers on Youtube and millions of visitors through Vietnam’s travel websites. The tourism industry organises and invites media, press and travel agencies to learn about Vietnam destinations. The industry has also participated in large international tourism events such as international sports competitions, fairs, festivals, tourism festivals, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum 2017, the fifth Asian Beach Games (ABG 5), Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Contest, Da Nang International Fireworks Competition (DIFC), and Hue Festival. With the efforts, Vietnam’s destinations have attracted many international friends, that has created the wave of visitors from key markets.

However, the tourism promotion in Vietnam still faces many challenges, including elements from the limitations of Vietnam’s tourism. Many conferences and seminars were held, to discuss solutions, but it seems that the tourism promotion has not been as effective as expected. The coordination in organising events of domestic units with the international units has not lived up to expectation, lack of unity. The display, introduction of Vietnams’ tourism products have been lack of attraction; meanwhile communication activities have been simple, lack of professionalism, lack of clear messages and topics. Market research has not paid adequate attention, along with the lack of proper product promotion strategies and the dependency on funding conditions.

In addition, the process of funding, approving outlines for promotion work go through many levels of approval, requiring waiting time that leads to passive, losing promotion opportunities. The socialization, mobilising of resources and economic sectors in the field is not effective. The annual budget for tourism promotion is low compared to other countries.

According to ideas of experts and many tourism businesses at the 2017 Tourism Promotion Conference held in Hanoi, in order to improve the effectiveness of tourism promotion, the tourism sector should research concerning the establishment of the unit, which is responsible for promoting national tourism, strengthening the coordination and connection between tourism promotion centres across the country. Especially in relation to the role of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) in orienting, updating, and forecasting market movements is the basis for all action programs. The contents and methods of organisation need to be renewed, effectively implemented models of cooperation in promoting, building and placing into operation the Tourism Development Assistance Fund. Meanwhile, the localities should effectively combine tourism promotion with trade and Vietnamese cultural centres in other countries to promte the image on Vietnam.

To achieve the goal of international visitor growth of at least 30 percent in 2017 set by the Government, Deputy Minister Huynh Vinh Ai of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam suggested the tourism sector mobilise all resources and implement promotion solutions to attract international visitors in the last 5 months. This is the information shared by Mr Ai at the Tourism Promotion Conference in 2017 held by Vietnam National Administration of Tourism recently in Hanoi. 

Vietnam’s tourism industry welcomed more than 10 million international arrivals in 2016 and over 7.2 million international arrivals in the first seven months of 2017. The direct contribution of tourism to GDP in 2016 was approximately 6.9 percent. Mr Ai stressed the role of tourism in the national economy, noting that in many countries, tourism has become a “salvation” for the economy when facing difficulties. In Vietnam, the tourism industry is receiving favourable conditions when the Politburo has identified tourism as the key economic sector of the country.

Deputy General Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) Mr Ha Van Sieu said that VNAT annually participates in major international tourism fairs in key markets; In collaboration with the Vietnam Tourism Association and localities to hold two main domestic fairs which are VITM (Hanoi) and ITE (Ho Chi Minh City); Maintain famtrips, press trips and roadshows in key markets; Develop advertising programmes on the media, promote e-marketing, and coordinate with partners such as VNtrip, VTVgo to organise photo competitions, unique travel experience, etc. Besides, tourism promotion also takes place through events such as the “National Tourism Year”, and broadcasting on publications, souvenirs.

On the exchange of public-private partnerships in the promotion of tourism in Vietnam, Mr Hoang Nhan Chinh, Director of the Travel Advisory Board (TAB) Secretariat, said that although tourism in Vietnam has achieved many impressive results, the sector has also encountered much congestion. According to the TAB study, Vietnam ranks sixth among ASEAN countries in terms of direct tourism contribution to GDP. On the budget for national tourism promotion, Mr Hoang Nhan Chinh said that the current budget for advertising tourism in Vietnam is only US$2 million per year, this is very low compared with other ASEAN countries. Another limitation of Vietnam’s tourism is that there are no tourism promotion agencies and no representative offices in some key markets. These are the difficulties that directly affect the promotion and tourism in Vietnam, especially in foreign markets.

Also in this regard, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association, Vu The Binh, said that the Tourism Development Assistance Fund should be set up soon and the fund management mechanism should be set up in a rational way for promotional activities. Mr Binh emphasised the importance of professionalism in tourism promotion, so it is necessary to set up an agency responsible for tourism promotion at the national level. At the same time, we should promote training to improve labour in the sector, as well as attract experts involved in this field.

The conference also noted many opinions of localities and enterprises related to the construction and development of tourism products such as developing cruise tourism products; Promote attracting tourists in markets near the end of the year (Northeast Asia, ASEAN); Support key tourism destinations (such as Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh, etc) to build visitor support centres, and; Develop training programmes, improve professional qualifications and skills for human resources in tourism.

General Director of the VNAT Nguyen Van Tuan highly appreciated comments by delegates. Mr Tuan said that tourism promotion and promotion is one of the key activities to fulfil the growth target assigned by the Government. Mr Tuan also expressed his consensus on the idea of strengthening public-private partnerships, cooperation among ministries, agencies from central to local levels; Mobilising resources; Unifying the promotion of the national tourism brand; Focusing on attracting visitors from key markets such as Northeast Asia, ASEAN, Western Europe, Russia, North America; Improving professionalism and efficiency in promotion, promoting the use of e-marketing, and building a database for tourism promotion.

Deputy Minister Huynh Vinh Ai noted the candid contribution of localities and businesses. Deputy Minister Ai also suggested that the industry focus on implementing solutions to achieve the target of passenger growth in 2017, focusing on localities and enterprises to carefully study the 2017 and 2018 promotion plan of VNAT to register for participation. The VNAT organises the preliminary review of the implementation of three strategies: tourism marketing, development of Vietnam tourism brand, development of tourism products in Vietnam; Study and propose the establishment of a specialized agency for tourism promotion; Develop steering mechanism, coordinate activities of local tourism promotion centres; Integrate the contents of the introduction of tourism in the external activities of localities; Promote the application of technology, apply a variety of tools to improve the efficiency of promotion, and; Strengthen cooperation between agencies, localities and enterprises.

He also asked the VNAT to synthesize comments from delegates at the conference to report to the leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which is an important basis for developing solutions and launch promotion activities in the future.

 
In the coming time, the tourism industry is to focus on implementing four groups of measures to promote international visitor growth in the last five months of the year, including: Promoting tourism promotion activities in potential areas; Strengthening destination management, diversifying and improving the quality of tourism services; Enhancing air connections, and; Speeding up the implementation of programmes to promote international tourists.
