Dong Hoi – Da Nang seaplane flights to be launched in May <div> <div><span>Inside a cave in Phong Nha – Ke Bang (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p><strong><br /> Quang Binh (VNA) –</strong> The first seaplane flights between Dong Hoi in the north-central coastal province of Quang Binh and the central coastal city of Da Nang will be launched from May 4 by Hai Au Aviation JSC.</p> <p>Using 12-passenger Cessna craft, the flights will offer sightseeing of Quang Binh province’s Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, a world natural heritage site.</p> <p>Tickets for charter flights requested during the week are estimated at 3,300 USD per flight, while regular flights on Saturdays and Sundays cost 300 USD per ticket. The flight time is about one hour.</p> <p>These promotion tickets will be offered from May 4 to September 20, 2019. After that, the company will announce new prices.</p> <p>A test flight on the route was conducted successfully on April 18.</p> <p>Phong Nha – Ke Bang is dubbed the “Kingdom of Caves” for the magnificent specimens it boasts. It was twice recognised as world natural heritage sites by UNESCO in 2003 and 2015.</p> <p>Son Doong, located in the heart of the Phong Nha – Ke Bang Nation Park, is the world’s largest cave recognised by three international organisations, namely Guinness (based in the UK), the Association World Record (based in Hong Kong) and WorldKings (based in the US and India).</p> <p>The 1,645m-long cave system, which extends through a mountain, was named one of the most captivating on earth by National Geographic. It was discovered by a local in 1991 and first explored in 2009 by the British Cave Research Association, and has been open to the public since 2013.</p> <p>Meanwhile, another cave, the Thien Duong, was labelled the world’s most beautiful and magnificent when it was discovered by scientists from the British Cave Research Association in 2005. </p> <p>Located 4 km west of the North-South Ho Chi Minh Road, the cave is surrounded by underground streams and rocky mountains. </p> <p>Thien Duong Cave is 30-100 metres wide, with the widest point measuring 150 metres. With a length of more than 36 km, it is considered the longest dry cave in Asia. </p> <p>Besides Son Doong and Thien Duong, other well-known caves include En and Pygmy, which are said to be the third and fourth biggest in the world.<br /> In 2018, Quang Binh welcomed some 3.9 million visitors, a year-on-year rise of 18.2 percent – including 200,000 foreigners, up 53.8 percent. The farms allow visitors to experience grape harvesting by hand and to learn about grape cultivation and wine production.</p> <p>The Ninh Thuan Grape and Wine Festival 2019 is scheduled to take place in Phan Rang-Thap Cham city and six districts in the province from April 26 to May 2.</p> <p>Within the framework of the event, a number of festive activities will be held, including field trips to grape and apple farms, an industry-trade fair, a contest for ethnic minority groups in the province, a performance of Raglai’s “Bo ma” (farewell to the dead) ceremony, a street festival, and a beach sports festival.</p> <p>Grapes are a highly valued staple crop in Ninh Thuan, which were first introduced to the province in 1960 and test-planted by the South-Central Centre for Agricultural Technical Research based in Ninh Son district. Measures discussed to promote Quang Ninh tourism in line with heritage values <div> <p>Speaking at the workshop, Chairman of Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee, Nguyen Duc Long, emphasised that Quang Ninh aims to turn tourism into its spearhead economic sector, creating a driving force for the local socio-economic development with high professionalism, an international level, synchronous and modern infrastructure and high-quality tourism products imbued with Quang Ninh’s cultural identities, helping it become one of the leading locales in tourism in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.</p> <p>Quang Ninh has set the target to welcome 15-16 million visitors, including seven million international travellers by 2020. In 2017, Vietnam ranked sixth among the world’s 10 fastest growing travel destinations. In 2018, Vietnam welcomed 15 million foreign tourists.</p> <p>Despite continuous increases in the number of visitors, Vietnam’s revenues from tourism are far lower than in other countries in the region.</p> <p>According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), foreign visitors spend an average US$900 on a trip to Vietnam, compared to US$1,105, US$1,109 and US$1,565 spent in Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand respectively.</p> <p>The relatively modest spending reflects lower prices, which, paradoxically are one of Vietnamese tourism’s major selling points. “Compared with Thailand, the average length of stay of visitors to Vietnam is almost the same (9.5 days in Vietnam and 9.6 days in Thailand). However, visitors to Vietnam spend only US$96 per day, while those to Thailand spend US$163, and Singapore: US$325,” said John Lindquist, senior advisor to BCG – a member of the UK’s Tourism Industry Council.</p> <p><strong>Where to spend money?</strong></p> <p>In addition to Vietnam’s lower prices, tourism experts attribute the modest spending to lack of opportunities for visitors to spend their money other than on sightseeing and accommodations. Even major cities such as Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc Island lack a diversity of entertainment facilities and shopping centers to serve visitors. Da Nang, a coastal tourist hub in the central region, is an example. Although it has maintained a high economic growth rate for many years and invested strongly in tourism infrastructure, the city still lacks special products and entertainment services for visitors, especially at night.</p> <p>Da Nang offers beaches and sea, seafood, the Non Nuoc stone carving village and Ba Na Hills, but little else of interest to foreign visitors. “Destinations such as Phu Quoc and Da Nang are attractive to visitors, but they need to create new offerings to encourage visitors to come back. Visitors to Da Nang like Ba Na Hills, Golden Bridge and luxurious relaxation facilities such as InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort. However, these are not enough to get visitors to stay longer and encourage them to spend more money,” said Dang Bich Tho, Deputy General Director of Hanoi Redtours.</p> <p>Sharing this opinion, Nguyen Tien Dat, Deputy Director of TransViet Travel, said, “Da Nang has many tourism advantages but still lacks bars and entertainment facilities to attract visitors at night. It has night markets but they remain small-sized and sell mostly street food. From Da Nang, tourists can travel easily to Hoi An and its Old Town. However, shops, markets and other service facilities in Hoi An close early, at about 10pm, while other Asian cities often stay awake beyond midnight.”</p> <p>Private investment at tourist sites in recent years has focused on providing integrated models that include diverse entertainment and shopping facilities. Examples include the Sun World Ba Na Hills complex above Da Nang, Sun World Fansipan Legend in Lao Cai, Sun World Halong Complex in Ha Long Bay, and Vinpearl sites in Nha Trang and Phu Quoc. However, these high-grade tourism products and services have not kept up with growing demand, while few private companies dare to invest in such tourist projects.</p> <p>Inadequate infrastructure is a hindrance to tourism development. Kenneth Atkinson, Executive Chairman of Grant Thornton Vietnam, said that while both the quality and quantity of tourist accommodations in major Vietnamese cities have improved greatly, demand keeps growing faster than supply, reflected in increasing room charges and occupancy rates.</p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td> <p><span>The question is whether increased spending options would drive up prices, making Vietnam less attractive to budget</span></p> <p><span>tourism. Measures discussed to promote Quang Ninh tourism in line with heritage values <div> <p>Speaking at the workshop, Chairman of Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee, Nguyen Duc Long, emphasised that Quang Ninh aims to turn tourism into its spearhead economic sector, creating a driving force for the local socio-economic development with high professionalism, an international level, synchronous and modern infrastructure and high-quality tourism products imbued with Quang Ninh’s cultural identities, helping it become one of the leading locales in tourism in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.</p> <p>Quang Ninh has set the target to welcome 15-16 million visitors, including seven million international travellers by 2020. Phu Tho welcomes 7 million arrivals to Hung Kings Temple festival <div> <div><span>People flock to Hung Kings Temple for the festival (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p><strong>Phu Tho (VNA)</strong> – The Hung Kings Temple historical relic site in Viet Tri city, the northern midland province of Phu Tho, welcomed over 7 million visitors during the Hung Kings Temple Festival from April 5-14.</p> <p>The figure was provided by the organizing board of the Hung Kings Temple Festival.</p> <p>On April 14, an incense offering ceremony was held in the province  Phu Tho to commemorate the death anniversary of Hung Kings, the legendary founders of the nation.</p> <p>The death anniversary of Hung Kings has long been considered a significant day of the whole nation, illustrating the spirit of solidarity and tradition “when drinking water, remember its sources”.</p> <p>Phu Tho along with the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, the central province of Nghe An, and the northern province of Son La representing different regions across the country has actively carried out plans in celebration of the death anniversary of Hung Kings and Hung Kings Temple Festival in 2019.</p> <p>Various kinds of activities have been taking place during the day such as palanquin processions, contests to make “Banh Chung” (square glutinous rice cake) and “Banh Day” (white, flat, and round glutinous rice cake) – which were created by the 18th prince of Hung King some 3,000-4,000 years ago – symbolysing the “earth” and the “sky”, respectively, and art and cultural programmes.</p> <p>Legend has it that Lac Long Quan (real name Sung Lam, son of Kinh Duong Vuong and Than Long Nu) married Au Co (the fairy daughter of De Lai). Au Co then went on to give birth to a pouch filled with one hundred eggs, which soon hatched into a hundred sons, believed to be Vietnam’s ancestors. However, soon thereafter, Lac Long Quan and Au Co separated. (Photo: baokhanhhoa.com.vn)</span></div> <p><strong>Hanoi (VNA)</strong> – The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism will host a tourism promotion programme in China’s Chengdu, Chongqing, and Shenzhen cities from May 15 to 24.</p> <p>The information was released at a regular press conference by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in Hanoi on April 17.</p> <p>The programme is expected to attract the participation of 300 travel companies, airlines, and Chinese tourism agencies and associations. It will feature business matching events, the introduction of Vietnamese destinations and tourism products, and art performances.</p> <p>According to the Institute for Tourism Development Research, the number of Chinese tourists accounts for 28-30 percent of the total number of foreigners to Vietnam. The group’s favorite destinations include Khanh Hoa province and Da Nang city in the central region, Quang Ninh province and Hanoi in the north, and Ho Chi Minh City in the south. Notably, 60 percent of foreigners visiting Khanh Hoa are from China; while the figures for Da Nang and Quang Ninh are 30 and 20 percent, respectively.</p> <p>It is forecast that the number of Chinese tourists to Vietnam will rise thanks to the low travel costs, short travel duration, and increased flight frequency between the two nations. Vietjet reports impressive growth on international routes

Vietjet reports impressive growth on international routes <div> <p>Budget carrier Vietjet grew phenomenally last year, with around 50 per cent jumps in both revenue and pre-tax profit from its core aviation business.  </p> <div> <div> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td><span>Vietjet reported very successful business performance in 2018</span></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>Vietjet has just announced its 2018 audited financial statement with very upbeat business results.</p> <p>Accordingly, the carrier posted VND53.577 trillion ($2.33 billion) in revenue and VND5.816 trillion ($252.9 million) in pre-tax profit last year.</p> <p>Despite oil price rising by 30 per cent, the company’s revenue and pre-tax profit from aviation transport hit VND33.779 trillion ($1.47 billion) and VND3.045 trillion ($132.4 million), increases of 49.8 and 48.9 per cent on-year.</p> <p>This attests to Vietjet’s expertise in revenue generation and cost management. It is significant to note that Vietjet’s record growth last year came mostly from its core aviation transport business.</p> <h2><strong>Incremental revenue growth in international passenger transport</strong></h2> <p>Vietjet and the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines hold almost the entirety of the domestic market. Vietjet has posted nearly 20 per cent revenue growth from aviation transport in the domestic market and continued holding the pole position in passenger volumes on domestic routes.</p> <p>The company also saw impressive growth in international routes. Five years ago, Vietjet only counted VND178 billion ($7.7 million) in international passenger transport revenue, this figure jumped to VND802 billion ($34.9 million) in 2016.</p> <p>In the past two years, the company posted exponential growth on its international routes, with last year’s international passenger transport revenue nearly doubling against 2017.</p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td><span>Vietjet’s revenue growth on international routes (including from passenger transport and value-added services; Unit: billion VND)</span></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>Accordingly, the company posted VND24.681 trillion ($1.07 billion) in total passenger transport revenue last year. Likewise, the revenue from value-added services which features high profit margins (selling souvenirs, food, and in-flight advertising, among others) amounted to VND8.410 trillion ($365.7 million), a 53.5 per cent jump on-year.</p> <h2><strong>Excelling on international flight provision</strong></h2> <p>According to figures from Vietjet and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, last year Vietjet performed 118,923 flights, over 21,000 flights more than in 2017, with 34,990 flights to international destinations, a 56.25 per cent jump against 2017.</p> <p>Vietjet’s growth in flight numbers far surpassed rivals in the domestic market and also exceeded the whole aviation industry’s average growth rate of 9 per cent.</p> <p>Last year, all other air carriers in the domestic market only increased flight numbers by a combined 4,000 flights in total.</p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td><span>Vietjet’s international routes</span></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>Effective cost management has bolstered Vietjet’s competitive capacity in the international market. Its direct operating expenses not including fuel costs (cost per available seat kilometre – CASK ex-fuel) went down by 0.1 per cent last year to 2.38 US cents by virtue of modern fleet and cost-saving measures, besides support for fuel cost optimisation from the engine manufacturer.</p> <p>The average CASK rose by 4-5 per cent in 2018 (Source: IATA), helping Vietjet boost profit on international routes which accounted for more than 60 per cent of the company’s total aviation transport profit last year.</p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td> <p><em>Aside from solid development in its home market, Vietjet aims to push up international route expansion to avail itself of lower fuel cost advantages on the international routes.</em></p> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>Besides a plethora of options in time schedules and destinations, Vietjet is approaching higher-income passengers with an array of priority services. New airport serves world famous Ha Long Bay <div> <p>(VEN) - Visitors to Vietnam can now fly directly to the must-see World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay, saving themselves a bus or car trip of several hours from Hanoi. Flights land at the recently inaugurated Van Don International Airport, located about 50km from Ha Long City, the capital of Quang Ninh Province in northeastern Vietnam.</p> <div> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td>An overview of the Van Don International Airport</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p><strong>Agreements with airlines</strong></p> <p>Van Don, named after the district in which it is located, is the first airport in Vietnam developed under a build-operate-transfer format. The single runway airfield, which went into operation in late December 2018, includes a passenger terminal capable of handling 2.5 million passengers. Flights will connect it to major Vietnamese cities and to various Asian destinations in the coming years.</p> <p>More than 60 airlines and travel companies took part in promotion events for the airport in late February and early March, which included the signing of cooperation agreements with the airport and introduction of travel agents to the facility.</p> <p>Signatories to the agreements on tourism and aviation with the Van Don International Airport included regional travel agencies, such as Sky Angkor and DHT Aviation Inc – the Vietnamese representative of major airlines in East Asia, Hana Tour of the Republic of Korea (RoK), Viet Travel and Smile Viet.</p> <p>The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) announced the recent signing of a cooperation agreement on tourism development in the 2019-2021 period between the national carrier Vietnam Airlines and the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism. Under the agreement, Vietnam Airlines will open routes connecting the city of Ha Long with destinations in Cambodia, including Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. The signing ceremony took place during a state-level visit to Cambodia by Communist Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong on February 26.</p> <p>CAAV Deputy General Director Vo Huy Cuong said this would be the first step for the domestic aviation industry to implement Prime Ministerial Decision 105/QD-TTg dated January 22, 2019 on enhancing air connectivity with tourist source markets.</p> <p>“The Van Don International Airport will be connected by domestic flights to Vinh, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Nam, Nha Trang, Can Tho, Đa Lat, Hue, Quy Nhon and Phu Quoc and will have international routes to China, the RoK, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore from now to 2025. These are decisive factors for sustainable development of the airport, in particular, and Quang Ninh’s tourism, in general,” Cuong said.</p> <p><strong>Incentives for tour operators</strong></p> <p>The Van Don International Airport and Quang Ninh Province have announced a series of incentives to attract airlines and travel companies to open routes and tours. These include reducing the rental price of counter space at the terminal and the cost for advertising in the airport.</p> <p>The airport’s director, Pham Ngoc Sau, said the airport currently provides incentives mostly to charter flights by reducing take-off and landing fees and cutting ground service costs by 70 percent.</p> <p>Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of Sun Group, the investor of the Van Don International Airport, said besides incentives for tourists (discounting tickets by 20-50 percent at the Sun World Halong Complex), Sun Group is committed to support policies for airlines and travel agencies when they open tours to Quang Ninh.</p> <p>“It is a privilege to experience the group’s projects in the province such as Sun World Halong Complex, Quang Hanh Hot Mineral Stream Resort, Sun Premier Village Halong Bay and other products of the group,” Truong said. Quang Ninh Province will also call on local businesses to provide incentive packages, including entertainment services, accommodations and restaurants for tourists who travel to Ha Long by air.</p> <p>Vo Huy Cuong said the CAAV supports charter and stopover flights to Van Don, and will work with relevant ministries and sectors to assess the impact and benefits of stopover flights that combine two or three destinations. Street carnival excites crowds in Sam Son Sea Festival 2019 <div> <p>The street carnival has been organised by Sun Group for the first time. The event took place as part of the Sam Son Sea Festival 2019 and aims to mark the beginning of the tourist season in Thanh Hoa province. The parade took place between 9:30 am and 11:30 am in the morning and was repeated from 16:00 to 18:00 in the afternoon on April 13. A troupe of European dancers from Sun World Ba Na Hills definitely served to liven up the event, bringing with them a range of unique dance routines. Residents and visitors enjoyed two floats during the parade which were beautifully decorated with flowers. Over 70 artists were carried on them, wearing colourful outfits, dancing, and encouraging tourists to dance with them. The parade stopped to perform on stages at three locations, including Hai Ba Trung-Xuan Huong lake, Le Thanh Tong-Xuan Huong lake, and the Tay Son-Xuan Huong lake t-junction. Visitors showed their delight at witnessing such a vibrant performance. Akshay Kumar from India said that this is the first time he has seen such an attractive street carnival, noting that artists look so beautiful that he can’t stop dancing with them. With a range of unique dances such as the fire dance and drum dance on display, artists were able to turn Xuan Huong Lake street into one large stage. The audience gave them a constant round of applause. Local people and tourists gathered together on the pavements on Xuan Huong Lake street, whilst some chose to watch from high-buildings close by to enjoy the festivities and to record images. Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Festival posts VND120 billion in revenue <div> <p>The four-day event featured various activities, including seminars, exchanges and offers of tours, which attracted more than 250,000 visitors, according to the municipal Department of Tourism.</p> <p>As many as 40 travel enterprises participated in the festival, who showcased their products and services at 150 pavilions. Approximately 12,700 visitors bought tours at the event, up 41% over 2018. Marble Mountains – icon of Danang tourism <div><span>The Marble Mountains are a popular destination near Danang city in central Vietnam, famous for temples, pagodas, caves, and magnificent views of fields and ocean.<br /></span> <div><span><br /></span> <span><br /></span></div> <p><span>The Marble Mountains, eight kilometers southeast of downtown Danang, rise above the sandy beach of Hoa Khue village.</span></p> <p><span>There are five peaks named after the five basic elements in Eastern philosophy – metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. They look like a god’s hand when seen from above, suggesting that this is a holy land.</span></p> <p><span>Legend says that an old fisherman, who lived on the Danang coast, suddenly saw a dragon emerging from the water to lay an egg. After the dragon had disappeared back into the water, a golden turtle, who claimed to be a god named Kim Quy, came and dug a hole in which to bury the egg.</span></p> <p><span>The turtle gave the fisherman one toenail and instructed him to protect the dragon egg from hawks and other predators. The dragon egg hatched a beautiful girl and the eggshell broke into five pieces, which turned into the five Marble Mountains.</span></p> <p><span>The Marble Mountains today are a nature reserve sheltering historical relics with a spiritual dimension. The sounds of wind and wooden bells, the fragrance of incense, and the transitory mountain shadows make visitors feel a deep peace in their souls.</span></p> <p><span>British visitor Ali Collier said, “The caves at the Marble Mountains are really stunning and special. I love this place and I want to know more about its. history and culture. The results of the preliminary round will be announced on May 3, with the top 16 teams advancing to the semifinals, slated between May 6 and 27.</p> <p>The 16 semifinal videos will be screened periodically on the television channel VTV6 and the fanpage <b><i><a>www.facebook.com/diff.vn/</a></i></b> from May 24 to June 17. Yen Mac fermented spring roll <div> <p>This dish is named after the famous place it is made. In the past, it was a dish served to students who came from other regions but stopped at Ninh Binh before continuing their trip to their examinations. But now, it has become a local delicacy that is served in many restaurants in big cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang.</p> <p>The cooking technique of this dish is quite elaborate. To make the dish requires not only a secret formula but also passion for the work. The meat to make delicious Yen Mac fermented spring rolls must be lean pork and makers usually choose meat right after the pigs are slaughtered to make the spring rolls fresher and more flavourful. Afterwards, the meat is cut into 2-3 cm long slices. Then, the slices are ground and mixed with “<em>thinh</em>” (a kind of ground roasted rice). Next, the meat is put into one garment to press it which will help it to be kept longer. The pork skins are boiled and cut into thin slices. Pork meat and skins are mixed with “<em>thinh”</em> again, a pinch of salt is added and it is then rolled into small rolls covered with guava leaves and wrapped in banana leaves. Next, the rolls are tightened by strings split from giang, one type of bamboo which has long nodes.</p> <p>Yen Mac fermented spring rolls are served with guava leaves, fig leaves and aromatic vegetables dipped into” <em>nuoc mam</em>” which is mixed with garlic, lemon juice, pepper and chilli.
