Society

— Cars have been banned from running on the Han River Bridge in the central city of Da Nang within seven months, starting Wednesday, as the city’s transport department has blocked the road for constructing a tunnel. The project costs around VND137 billion (US$6.12 million) and is expected to be finished at the end of February next year.

— Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has assigned the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to work with Ministry of Industry and Trade and provincial People’s Committees to inspect steel factories in terms of environmental protection requirements. Those fail to meet the requirements will be strictly penalized or even be closed down.

Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper has decided to award VND7 million ($313) to Phan Van Bac, the truck driver who bravely saved a passenger bus with brake problems on Bao Loc Pass in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on Wednesday afternoon. Bac’s act rescued more than 30 people, the bus driver and all the passengers.

— Many hotels in the central city of Da Nang have had their guests’ assets stolen recently. Thieves were found disguising themselves as the guests to sneak in the hotels.

— The Mien Dong (Eastern) Bus Station in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, on Wednesday afternoon was rocked by a man firing a gun into the air, according to witnesses. Local police are investigating the case.

— The 2016 International Travel Expo Ho Chi Minh City (ITE HCMC) kicked off on Wednesday night with the participation of Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien. The minister said the annual event has not only connected international tourists with Vietnam but it has also been intended to spur sustainable tourism development in the country.

— Many Vietnamese enterprises have expressed their concerns after the bankruptcy of Korean Hanjin Shipping Line, as their goods are still on the company’s ships.

Lifestyle

— Two Vietnamese films, including Ngo Thanh Van’s “Tam Cam: The Untold” and Truong Minh Quy’s “The City of Mirrors: A Fictional Biography,” have been chosen to compete in the A Window on Asia Cinema category at Busan International Film Festival in South Korea next month.
