Hoi An seeks solutions to restore Cau pagoda

The event saw the attendance of numerous scientists and experts in Vietnam and Japan.

According to Director of the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Preservation and Management Centre Nguyen Chi Trung, time as well as impacts of human and environmental factors have caused the serious degradation of the 400-year-old structure.

At the seminar, member of the National Heritage Council, Professor Dr. Truong Quoc Binh, emphasized that the preservation and repair of the relic site must meet specific requirements, such as keeping maximum original elements of the pagoda, ensuring authenticity of the relics and minimising the use of new materials.

He also emphasised that the approved plans for the restoration of the pagoda should be publicised.

Japanese cultural researcher Toshio Shimada affirmed that Japan would co-ordinate and support Vietnam in repairing the pagoda that the Japanese government contributed to constructing.

Japanese experts will present their techniques and ideas for Vietnamese scientists to refer to and apply in restoration.

Concluding the seminar, the representative of the Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee noted that due to the contributions of domestic and Japanese partners, the restoration of the Cau pagoda would be soon implemented, avoiding the serious degradation of the unique and meaningful cultural structure.

Currently, the Cau pagoda welcomes around 4,000 visitors each day.
