Vietnam’s contributions to the FTX-2016 highly appreciated

PANO – Vietnam’s active participation and contributions to the success of the 2016 Peacekeeping Operations and Humanitarian Mine Action Field Training Exercise (FTX-2016), held from March 2nd to 8th in Pune of India’s Maharashtra state, was highly appreciated by international friends.

During the event, the 32-member Vietnamese delegation, led by Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army Senior Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan, exchanged and learnt experiences in detecting and overcoming the aftermath of bombs and mines left behind from the war and sending troops to UN peacekeeping operations.

On March 7th, General Tuan and five Vietnamese observers witnessed the humanitarian mine action exercise at the training ground of the Engineering University, and the peacekeeping operations exercise at Aundh Military Base. He encouraged the Vietnamese participants to fulfill the mission. At these exercises, the Vietnamese participants cooperated well with the officers from other countries to perform all the contents and were praised by international friends.

Under the theme, “Force 18″, the event was a chance for armies of member countries to exchange ideas, and to promote mutual understanding and boost the coordination capability among countries.

During the week-long event, 260 officers from participating armies under the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus ADMM+ framework were divided into two groups. 117 participants took part in the training and exercise on peacekeeping operations, and the rest joined a meeting on the functions and missions of the UN’s mine action agencies and international humanitarian mine action organizations. The participants also practiced detecting bombs and mines by hand and by machines, and using police dogs in detecting bombs, mines and other unexploded ordnances.
