A workshop on developing institutional core competencies for competition regulation – regulator perspectives was held in Surabaya, Indonesia, on March 2-4.
The workshop intended to identify issues and solutions when setting up and running competition agencies so as to ensure effective implementation of competition policies and laws in the ASEAN Community when it is formed.
Chairwoman of the ASEAN Expert Group on Competition (AEGC), Kejpiroon Kohsuwan highlighted the importance of developing credible competition agencies by way of ensuring its independence, accountability and transparency.
The workshop identified the core issues faced by competition agencies which includes human resources (skills, capacity, and staff retention), structure (independence of decision-making process), and advocacy.
Participating delegates exchanged information and practical experience of current competition agencies.
The workshop was hosted by the Commission for the Supervision of Business Competition of Indonesia (KPPU) and supported by ASEAN, Australia, and New Zealand.
Participants included competition agency officials from the ASEAN member countries, Australia, and Japan.-VNA
