HCMC – Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province has been changing its long-term development direction away from heavy industry and into services for the last three years, said provincial vice chairman Ho Van Nien.
“The province is making a strong shift to attract investment in services as a major industry, including services in tourism, trade, maritime and logistics,” Nien told the Daily on Thursday at a news conference introducing the World Food Festival to be held in the province from July 21 to 25.
“Before 2007, we focused on heavy industry. That was a mistake,” said the vice chairman of the province.
He said Ba Ria-Vung Tau had attracted total FDI capital of US$27 billion, 50% of it to the service industry. Tourism and maritime services have attracted the most in FDI with the most effective projects.
According to Nien, investments in logistics are expected to boom after the development of seaports and industrial zones in the province.
In order to develop tourism, the province intends to boost its food industry which is not one of its strengths. Nien said there were many companies producing seafood products for the domestic market and for export but the products were not diverse.
The vice chairman hopes local and foreign enterprises will find ideas to develop the food and beverage industry of the province via the World Food Festival.
The festival is an effort of the province to woo domestic and foreign tourists with about 800,000 tourists expected. According to Nguyen Van Tan, director of the representative agency of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, this is the first time the province will hold such a large international festival, one of the biggest events scheduled in the country’s south this year.
The festival will combine cultural performances including a street carnival and food exhibitions along three kilometers of beach with the participation of over 40 countries and territories and over 40 Vietnamese provinces. There will also be a performance by chef Martin Yan of the well-known Yan Can Cook program.
