(Cinet)- Festivals at the Va temple and Hat Mon temple in the capital city of Hanoi have been named as part of the country’s intangible cultural heritage.

The Va festival is organised in autumn and spring every year at the Va temple in Trung Hung commune, Son Tay suburban district. It honours the god of Tan Vien Mountain known as Son Tinh, who is respected as one of the immortals in Vietnam’s folk tale. Va Temple festival is annually held in the full moon of the first lunar month (spring festival) and of the ninth lunar month (autumn festival) to celebrate his services rendered to society. Every three years, the festival is organized with a large scale. Those are the years of the Mouse, Cat, Horse and Rooster.The festival begins on the 14thof the ninth lunar month. On that day, the inhabitants of Van Gia, Nghia Phu, Thanh Tri, Mai Trai, Dam Trai Hamlets gather at the Tich River (the section from Thuong Cau Vang to Ha Ma Mang) to catch fish.

The Hat Mon festival at the Hat Mon Temple in Hat Mon commune, Phuc Tho suburban district commemorates the contributions to the nation by the two national heroines, known as the Trung sisters. In the Hat Mon festival, there is an interesting custom which is giving the floating cake on the river. People take 49 cakes (in the symbol of 49 sons of Lac Long Quan (father of Vietnamese people) to place in the lotus and drift into the river to let it come to the sea.

The two sisters, Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, led their troops on elephant back to repel Chinese invaders for three years. The victory brought the liberation for Dai Viet (an old name for Vietnam) after 247 years of Chinese domination.

Besides the two festivals, an additional 13 heritages were also listed as National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Decision 246/QD-BVHTTDL.
