VN protests against tourist detention in Malaysia

The Vietnamese national identified as Truc, who is an official of HCMC’s District 12, was detained at Kuala Lumpur airport on July 23 while she was going through the immigration to fly back to HCMC on suspicion of using a forged immigration seal.

The July 23-28 detention of Truc was against the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, which is an international treaty that defines a framework for consular relations between independent countries.

Vietnam also opposed the act of handcuffing Truc as if she was a criminal, even though there was no evidence of her violation of Malaysian rules, Minister Counselor To Thi Huong at the Vietnamese embassy said, citing the diplomatic note.

Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would work with the Malaysian immigration authorities over the incident.

Truc, who works for the Party Committee Office of District 12, was on a trip to Singapore and Malaysia with 60 colleagues from July 18 to 23, organized by the leading tourism firm Saigontourist Travel Service, according to Le Van Cuong, head of the District 12 Party Committee Office.

On July 23, while the tourists were completing procedures to leave Kuala Lumpur for HCMC, Malaysian immigration officers detained Truc as they said she had a fake stamp on her passport when traveling from Singapore to Malaysia.

Her office in HCMC was notified of the detention. They sent an email to the Vietnamese embassy in Malaysia on July 25 asking for immediate assistance. But the embassy said it only received the information on July 27.

“Embassy staff went to the airport on July 27 and she returned to Vietnam on July 28. She cried a lot when seeing her family and colleagues at Tan Son Nhat airport,” Cuong said.
