Indecent behavior

The Saigon Times Daily

In Singapore, a lot of female Vietnamese tourists often face severe scrutiny by immigration officers and are sometimes requested to show and count cash in front of other passengers waiting for immigration procedures.

Worse still, some are taken to a separate immigration control room for further interrogation for long hours.

This inappropriate treatment has led the Vietnamese embassy in Singapore to request the Singapore foreign ministry and immigration authority for explanations.

This time in Malaysia, the Vietnamese embassy has sent a diplomatic note protesting against the July 23-28 detention of a Vietnamese tourist at Kuala Lumpur airport without clear reasons.

This tourist, identified as Truc, was detained while she was exiting Malaysia after a Singapore-Malaysia tour which was arranged by Saigontourist Travel Service Company for 61 officials from HCMC’s District 12.

The reason given by Malaysian immigration authorities, according to Tuoi Tre newspaper, was they suspected the Malaysian immigration seal in her passport was forged.

It is unacceptable that they did not inform the Vietnamese embassy of her detention, which ran counter to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963 – an international treaty that defines a framework for consular relations between independent countries.

When the Vietnamese embassy got news from the Party Committee of District 12 about the incident, it sent people to the airport for protection of Truc as a Vietnamese citizen on July 27. But surprisingly, Malaysian authorities did not let them get in or talk to Truc at first. In the end, they bowed to Vietnamese pressure.

Although Malaysia allowed Truc to exit on July 28 after the Vietnamese embassy strongly protested against the way she was treated, it has yet to give a clear explanation, except for saying the immigration seal was real.

Truc, who is still in shock over the ordeal at Malaysia’s airport, now needs official apologies for this indecent behavior to get back her dignity.
