Vietnam to finalise UNESCO-recognition dossier for Then singing by Feb 2016

NDO – The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has ratified an overall plan to compose a dossier seeking UNESCO’s recognition of Hat Then (Then singing) of the Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic groups as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Accordingly, the Vietnam National Academy of Music, in collaboration with localities with the musical genre’s prevalence, including Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan, Bac Giang, Cao Bang, Dien Bien, Ha Giang, Lai Chau, Lang Son, Lao Cai, Quang Ninh, Thai Nguyen, and Yen Bai, will hasten the compilation of the dossier to be finalised by February 28, 2016.

The construction of the nomination aims to confirm and honour the value of the distinctive musical genre in the spiritual and cultural life of the Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic groups in northern Vietnam.

It is an opportunity to introduce and promote the value of one of the nation’s intangible cultural heritages to people throughout the country and to international friends, while helping local communities to gain awareness and insight into one of their heritage values in addition to encouraging young people to preserve and promote Then singing.

Then singing is a traditional art form and an indispensable cultural activity in the life of Tay, Nung and Thai ethnic people, who perform it during rituals to pray for things such as good health, a good harvest and longevity. The style of singing is a unique combination of music and lyrics and traditionally accompanied by a handmade gourd lute, called Dan Tinh or Tinh Tau.

UNESCO has already recognised nine Vietnamese cultural heritages as intangible cultural heritages of humanity, including Nghe Tinh vi-giam folk singing, don ca tai tu Nam Bo (Southern amateur folk music), the Worship of the Hung Kings, xoan singing, the Giong festival, ca tru (chamber music), quan ho (love duet) singing, Gong space culture in the Central Highlands, and Hue’s royal court music.
