A Hanoi-based business has bought the deluxe car, which was donated by Dao Hong Tuyen, 61, a well-known businessman who is the chairman of Tuan Chau Group, which is headquartered on Tuan Chau Island in the province’s Ha Long City, said the Quang Ninh newspaper, which received the car from Tuyen last week.

The newspaper had earlier planned to auction the car for cash for relief activities, but yesterday the above business, which has requested not to be named, bought it directly from the news outlet for the said price.

The money will be spent on helping Quang Ninh to overcome the aftermath of recent severe downpours and subsequent flooding that are considered the worst in the past 40 years in the province, the newspaper said.

Part of the money will be used to repair damaged schools, purchase teaching equipment and tools, and create scholarships for poor students in the province, said Nguyen Tien Manh, editor-in-chief of the Quang Ninh newspaper.

Meanwhile, the donor of the car, Tuyen, had contributed VND2 billion ($91,700) in cash, six filters that can turn sea water into fresh water worth VND900 million ($41,260) in total, and many other gifts.

Tuyen is called the “King of Tuan Chau Island” because he has been developing a huge project there.

Besides the Tuan Chau International Tourism & Recreation Complex on the island, Tuyen also owns many companies and plants with tens of thousands of workers, according to newswire zing.vn.

As of Wednesday, the death toll caused by downpours and floods that have raged in northern Vietnam, including Quang Ninh, since July 27 reached 30, the Central Steering Board for Disaster Prevention and Control reported yesterday.

Of the deaths, 17 were in Quang Ninh, which has also suffered total damage of over VND2.7 trillion (over $124 million).

Floodwater began to recede in Quang Ninh on Tuesday and local authorities are trying to help locals get back to their normal life.
