Can Tho tourism authorities suspended an air route to Bangkok on Thursday after five trial flights, saying it may relaunch the service during the holiday season early next year.
Nguyen Khanh Tung, director of Can Tho Tourism and Trade Promotion Center, told Tuoi Tre newspaper that the center has cooperated with Ho Chi Minh City-based tourism company Vietravel to operate the charter flights.
But Vietravel, which covers 75 percent of the operating costs, no longer wants to invest in the service, he said.
The route was launched on July 21 with a 180-seat flight every five days.
But travel demand has dropped since because it is the end of summer.
Flights so far have been mostly filled but the last one from Bangkok on Thursday had to land in Ho Chi Minh City as there were not many people traveling to Can Tho.
Tung said the service can be resumed early next year for the New Year holiday season.
