<p><b><sup>th</sup> to 14<sup>th</sup>, reported the Khanh Hoa provincial People’s Committee at a press conference on June 29<sup>th</sup>.</b></p>
<p>Mr. Truong Dang Tuyen, Director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said the festival will include 52 cultural and sporting activities, honoring traditionally cultural values and quintessence of sea and people in Khanh Hoa in particular and Vietnam in general.</p>
<p>On the sideline, the event will have numerous activities towards the country’s sea and island sovereignty such as an exhibition displaying maps and documentation on Vietnam’s sovereignty over Vietnam’s Paracel and Spratly archipelagos and a scientific conference on educating sea and island sovereignty at schools.</p>
<p>Specific traits on Khanh Hoa’s sea and people will be manifested through folk games, Cham pottery display, basket boat rowing competition, traditional fishing competition and a photo exhibition on the beauty of Khanh Hoa aloe wood. In addition, large-scale sporting competitions will be held such as national sailboat competition, national beach volleyball competition and Khanh Hoa beach volleyball completion.</p>
<p>The bi-annual festival is expected to draw 150,000 foreign and domestic tourists to Khanh Hoa./.</p>

<p>The event is co-organized by the Southwest Region Steering Committee, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Can Tho Municipal People’s Committee.</p>
<p>It aims to promote local tourism, popularize tourism potentials and special tourism products in coordination with environmental protection and sustainable development.</p>
<p>It will cover a series of events, notably a conference on Mekong Delta’s green tourism development and a meeting on investment attraction, with the participation of the regional consul generals, consulates and international organizations.</p>

<p>On this occasion, they visited an exhibition featuring the life and revolutionary career of the late Party chief.</p>
<p>Nguyen Van Linh, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam from 1986 to 1991, was known as a staunch and reformist leader who strongly promoted the Doi Moi (renewal) process in Vietnam.</p>
<p>The same day, the Hung Yen provincial People’s Committee and Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism held an artistic program in celebration of the late Party chief’s 100th birthday anniversary.</p>

Mekong Delta: moves to enhance green tourism investments
<p>Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh has requested Mekong Delta localities make strong moves to attract investment to the region’s green tourism.</p>
<p>An investment promotion meeting in Can Tho city on June 30 drew officials from several ministries and localities, Consul Generals of some countries, and domestic and foreign business representatives.</p>
<p>The Deputy PM said Vietnam boasts great advantages to attract tourism investments such as a stable political situation and community hospitality.</p>
<p>Although the region recorded rapid growth in the tourism sector, the results have yet to reach their expected potential, he noted, adding that number of foreign tourists is still below that of regional countries.</p>
<p>He said to foster tourism investments, the Government, central agencies and localities must ensure the legitimate interests of enterprises and commit to strong administrative procedure reform to improve the economy’s competitiveness.</p>
<p>He also urged them to hold regular dialogues with domestic and foreign businesses to address hindrances and provide optimal conditions for business operations.</p>
<p>Ninh added other necessary efforts to improve Mekong Delta tourism, including creating typical tourist products, developing infrastructure with both State and private funding, boosting inter-provincial coordination, equipping tourism personnel with first-rate skills and encouraging local residents to adopt a more civilised lifestyle.</p>
<p>At the meeting, the State Bank of Vietnam inked credit contracts for two tourism projects in the Phu Quoc Island of Kien Giang province and another project in Phong Dien district of Can Tho.</p>
<p>The event was part of the 2015 Mekong Delta Green Tourism Week, which is underway in Can Tho from June 27 to July 3. The week also includes a fair with 1,030 booths, a food festival and a street festival.</p>
<p>The Mekong Delta region encompasses Can Tho city and the 12 provinces of An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Ca Mau, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh and Vinh Long.-VNA</p>

<p>The program will focus on building 03 gratitude houses for young people’s falilies with difficult circumstances in Binh Thuan commune, Binh Son distrct; exchange and meet local youth and resident through art and sport exchange activities; visit some famous landscapes and historical relics in Quang Ngai and Quang Nam provinces; etc.</p>
<p>The program’s activities will be taken place from June 29 to July 19, aiming to create friendly relationship and mutual understanding between American students and Vietnam’s students, especially Quang Ngai local people and students.</p>

<p>“Relay for Entrance Exams” was first organized in 2008 by the Quang Ngai Youth Entrepreneur Association in conjunction the Provincial Trade Union and District People Committees. </p>
<p>It was started to help ease the financial burden and provide safe transportation to Binh Dinh Province for as many as 1,000 students who wish to sit for the critical University Examinations.</p>
<p>This year Doosan Vina and other companies in Quang Ngai came together to support the students with a fleet of busses that will carry them to the exams.Doosan Vina supplied three hi-quality, 50 seat buses for this year’s “Relay.”</p>
<p>The buses departed at 7:30 on June 28th from Dien Hong Sports Centre in Quang Ngai City with high hopes, cheers and the well wishes of family members and officials.</p>
<p>In addition to the buses, Doosan Vina also prepared boxed snacks for the Doosan passengers to enjoy during the 180 kilometer trip. Total funding for the program was over 32 million VND.</p>
<p>The year’s university entrance examinations will take place over four days at 38 examination centers across Vietnam. This year more than one million students are expected to take the exam nationwide.</p>

A Korean teacher to work in Quang Ngai

<p>Quang Ngai Provincial People’s Committee, in its newly-announced Official Letter, has agreed to permit a Korean volunteer, Mr. Kim Hong Gown, born 1959, to work as a primary teacher in two years for Tinh Tho primary school No. 2, Son Tinh district, Quang Ngai province (commencing 6/2015-6/2017). </p>
<p>The volunteer is placed to Quang Ngai by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) under the program signed between Governments of Korea and Viet Nam aiming at strengthening bilateral relationships among two sides.</p>
<p>The Chairman requested Son Tinh DPC to direct the district Education and Training Department and Tinh Tho primary School No. 2 to support the volunteer in professional teaching schedule and management of the volunteer under the current regulations of the State.</p>
<p>Reportedly, KOICA many years ago also funded to partly construct the hospitals and schools in districts of Binh Son, Son Tinh, Duc Pho. In addition, KOICA assigned some volunteers to Quang Ngai province to provide health check services (free of charge) for patients and to work as Taekwondo instructors in the provincial Sports Gifted School.</p>

Vietnamese more open to “non-traditional family”

<p><em>VietNamNet Bridge – The Institute of Social, Economic and Environment Research (iSEE) has reported results of its survey, saying that Vietnamese are now more open to nontraditional families.</em></p>

<p>The survey results were issued at the workshop “The core values and challenges of the contemporary forms of family in Vietnam”.</p>
<p>According to the institute’s survey of 1,500 people, conducted in May and June 2015, Vietnamese families are facing conflict and disagreement between members of the family, adultery, debt and other issues.</p>
<p>The report said that 27.5% of families faced disagreements between generations (parents, grandparents, children); 16% face the risk of adultery of wife/husband or both; and 9.9% are in conflict because of debt.</p>
<p>At least 19.6% of women said that adultery was unacceptable while only 10.1% of men agreed.</p>
<p>The percentage of women who felt “unpeaceful” or “dissatisfied” with some aspects of family life such as the share of feelings, caring, the faithfulness of their husbands, and the division of housework was significantly higher than men.</p>
<p>Regarding the survey, iSEE’s expert Pham Thanh Tra said that while the traditional view of the family (the family must have parents and children) still prevailed, some new perspectives and new values of family had appeared.</p>
<p>Besides love as a universal value, personal freedom, privacy and honesty are the new values that were selected by many people.</p>
<p>The change in view of the type and value of the family was shown through support to families with the wife or husband being a foreigner (49%) or same-sex family (19%).</p>
<p>Relatively high proportions of respondents had a neutral or positive viewpoint of single-parent family from divorce (35.3%), single family due to not getting married (33.7%), living together without getting married (26. 4%) or family without children (32.1%).</p>
<p>Urban residents are more in favor of non-traditional families than those in rural areas.</p>
<p>Love and sharing remain the core values</p>
<p>Mr. Hoa Huu Van, Deputy Director of the Family Department of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stressed: “In the changing trend of the family in general and the variety of the type of family in particular, amid the multidimensional impact of the process of industrialization and international integration, we believe that the function of psychological and emotional satisfaction will become the dominant function of the family, beyond all other functions such as reproductive, economics and social education of children.”</p>
<p>Van said that love and the sharing would be the core and immutable values of Vietnamese families.</p>
<p>On the sidelines of the workshop, Mr. Bakhodir Burkhanov, Vietnam deputy director of the UN Development Program (UNDP) said: “The International Declaration of Human Rights affirms that everyone has the right to create a family, including single people, transgender people or two adults regardless of their gender. We encourage and support the Vietnamese Government and National Assembly to find the challenges that these vulnerable groups are facing and protect the family creation right.”</p>

<p>HA NOI (VNS) — The website <em>footballchannel.asia</em> has named striker Abass Dieng of Toyota V.League 1 side Binh Duong as one of the top five foreign strikers who have been performing exceptionally well.</p>
<p>The website said these players helped their Southeast Asian clubs to start the 2015 season on a high note.</p>
<p>The website said, “Despite a successful year in 2014, during which he won the best foreigner player in Viet Nam award, Abass doesn’t sleep on his victory. The Senegalese striker has scored eight goals for Binh Duong, helped the defending champions remain on top of the table.”</p>
<p>Dieng scored two goals in the AFC Champions League and the National Cup respectively. He has showed his class since joining the Vietnamese side after leaving a Hungarian club.</p>

<p>(VOV) -Ho Chi Minh City has ranked sixth among the top 10 cheapest cities to buy beer across the world, with a bottle costing £1.15, according to the UK Daily Telegraph.</p>
<p>Other Asian cities, including Delhi, Bangkok, Bali, and Manila, are also proven to be cost-effective places to enjoy a cold one, with £1.50 per bottle on average, in each destination.</p>
<p>The magazine quoted the website GoEuro.co.uk’s survey that the Krakow and Kiev, respectively, topped the 2015 Beer Price Index with the average bottle costing the equivalent of £1.07.</p>
<p>The survey compared prices at both bars and supermarkets in 75 major cities.</p>
<p>In addition, Geneva, Switzerland was the most expensive city for beer drinkers with £4.08 per bottle, the survey showed.</p>
<p>Tel Aviv, Oslo, and New York were among the other top five.</p>

<p>NDO – The Southwest Region Steering Committee (SRSC) hosted an opening ceremony of the 2015 Mekong Delta Green Tourism Week in Can Tho city on June 26.</p>
<p>The ceremony was attended by former State President Tran Duc Luong; and Politburo members Le Hong Anh, Permanent member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat; Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, National Assembly Vice Chairwoman; and Vu Van Ninh, Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the SRSC.</p>
<p>Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy PM Vu Van Ninh spoke highly of the Mekong Delta tourism development over the past years, which significantly contributed to the regional socio-economic development as well as the preservation of the tradition culture.</p>
<p>The Mekong Delta provinces should also make full use of their advantages, strengthen links for green tourism development, as well as mobilise all resources to invest in tourism infrastructure and enhance human resource development, he noted.</p>
<p>Scheduled to run until July 4, the week-long festival features activities to promote investment in eco-tourism and create links among regional provinces as well as between the region and other localities.</p>
<p>The event also provides a good opportunity for local and foreign travel agencies to showcase their products and services at over 1,000 booths at a fair in the riverside area of the Can Tho River in Cai Rang District of Can Tho City.</p>
<p>Other art performances, cuisine and street festivals will also take place during the festival.</p>

<p><b>The central coastal province of Khanh Hoa greeted about 1.8 million tourists staying overnight in the first half of the year, fulfilling 45% of the year’s target, reported the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.</b></p>
<p>Of this, foreign tourist arrivals were 410,000 or 41% of the year’s plan. Total tourism revenue posted VND2.93 trillion, 40.7% of the year’s plan.</p>
<p>According to the Department, during the period, the average length of stay of each visitor to Nha Trang city was 2.3 days with average room capacity reaching 65.5%.</p>
<p>Total tourist arrivals to Nha Trang were 6.7 million. Markets sending the largest numbers to the coastal city were Russia (79,000), China (36,000), the Republic of Korea (18,000), Australia (17,000) and the US (13,000).</p>

Businesses encouraged to invest in green tourism

<p>(VOV) – A conference on investment promotion in green tourism was held in Can Tho on June 30 under the framework of the Green Tourism Week in the Mekong Delta region.</p>
<p>Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh said the Mekong Delta has a great potential for green tourism development.</p>
<p>He quoted statistics from regional countries, saying that Thailand attracted 25 million visitors a year while with natural advantage and political stability, Vietnam lured more than 7 million tourists only.</p>

<p>He called on businesses to speed up investment in the Mekong Delta region’s tourism and authorised ministries, departments and localities to remove difficulties for businesses.</p>
<p>The Government will create a niche for tourism investors to operate effectively while protecting the environment, he confirmed.</p>
<p>Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Vuong Duy Bien reported that the region lured 22.5 million visitors last year, including 1.8 million foreign arrivals, and earned VND6,630 billion.</p>

<p>Moreover, in the context of climate change, green tourism plays a key role, helping mitigate natural disasters and promote sustainable development in the region.</p>
<p>At the conference, three commercial banks will sign contracts in principle on green tourism development for three projects in Kien Giang and Can Tho provinces with total loans of more than VND1,000 billion.</p>

<p>HCM CITY (VNS) — Captain Phung Ngoc Vinh Quy scored twice to help Khanh Hoa beat Thua Thien-Hue 2-1 in the curtain-raiser of the National Beach Football Championship yesterday.</p>

<p>LONDON: Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova reached the Wimbledon second round on Monday (Jun 29) as 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt’s 17-year All England Club career came to a bruising end.</p>
<p>Defending champion Djokovic enjoyed a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber with crucial breaks in the ninth game of each set.</p>
<p>But the world number one and top seed again found himself defending allegations that coach Boris Becker is using various means to coach him from the sidelines, a practice which is banned.</p>
<p>“I’m just trying to figure out what you want to achieve with this story. Do you want to say I’m cheating, my team? I’m really trying to figure out what’s behind this,” fumed the 28-year-old Djokovic.</p>
<p>The usually affable Serb added: “There are certain ways of communication which is encouragement, which is support, which is understanding the moment when to clap or say something that can lift my energy up, that can kind of motivate me to play a certain point. But it’s all within the rules.”</p>
<p>Djokovic, playing his first match since his defeat to Stan Wawrinka in the French Open final three weeks ago ended his hopes of completing a career Grand Slam, hit 12 aces and 36 winners past world number 33 Kohlschreiber.</p>
<p>HEWITT BOWS OUT FIGHTING</p>
<p>He next faces Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen who defeated Hewitt 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 in a four-hour marathon.</p>
<p>It was Hewitt’s last singles match at the tournament – and 44th five-setter at the majors – as he plans to retire after next year’s Australian Open. “To beat him here when it’s my last time here as well, it’s tough to find the words,” Nieminen said.</p>
<p>Top seed Serena Williams, bidding to become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to wrap up all four majors in one season, endured a nervy start and was warned for swearing before completing a 6-4, 6-1 win over Margarita Gasparyan, the world number 113 from Russia who has never won a tour-level match in four years as a professional.</p>
<p>“It feels good so far. Just one match but it feels good just to be back here at Wimbledon. I’ve done so well here in the past so I’ll always have so many good memories,” said the 33-year-old American after her 73rd Wimbledon match win secured her a second round clash against Hungary’s Timea Babos.</p>
<p>Fourth seed Sharapova also reached the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Britain’s Johanna Konta. Sharapova, the 2004 champion, will face Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp for a place in the last 32.</p>
<p>“I was quite pleased with the way things went. It was my first competitive match in about four weeks, so I just wanted to start off really strong,” said the Russian.</p>
<p>VENUS IN A HURRY</p>
<p>Five-time champion Venus Williams wasn’t to be outdone as the 34-year-old American took just 42 minutes to crush compatriot Madison Brengle 6-0, 6-0. Williams hit 29 winners to just two from Brengle, the world number 36.</p>
<p>But hers wasn’t the fastest win of the day as German 14th seed Andrea Petkovic needed just 38 minutes to see off Shelby Rogers of the United States.</p>
<p>Spanish ninth seed Carla Suarez Navarro went down 6-2, 6-0 to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in just 52 minutes while Italian 24th seed Flavia Pennetta lost 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas.</p>
<p>Two-time semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka, seeded 23, saw off Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-1 and seventh seed Ana Ivanovic breezed past Chinese qualifier Xu Yifan 6-1, 6-1.</p>
<p>In the men’s first round, Australia’s 26th seed Nick Kyrgios, who knocked out Rafael Nadal last year, eased past Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman 6-0, 6-2, 7-6 (8/6).</p>
<p>US Open champion Marin Cilic, the ninth seeded Croatian and a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon last year, got past Japanese qualifier Hiroki Moriya 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7/4).</p>
<p>Germany’s Tommy Haas, at 37 years and 100 days old, and who first played Wimbledon in 1997, beat Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to become the oldest man to win a match at Wimbledon since Jimmy Connors (38 years 308 days) in 1991.</p>
<p>Japan’s fifth seed Kei Nishikori needed his lower left leg strapped before clinching a gruelling 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Italy’s Simone Bolelli.</p>
<p>Meanwhile Canadian seventh seed Milos Raonic, a semi-finalist last year, beat Spain’s Daniel Gimeno 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4).</p>

<p>LONDON: Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne is set to join Liverpool as Brendan Rodgers continues to revamp his squad ahead of the new season, British media reported on Monday (Jun 29).</p>
<p>The 24-year-old England right-back has returned from holiday and reportedly underwent a medical before the £12.5 million move is completed. Assuming he passed his medical, Clyne will become Liverpool’s sixth pre-season signing.</p>
<p>Arrangements are also reportedly being made to bring Brazil international Roberto Firmino to Anfield as his participation in the Copa America has come to an end with the defeat by Paraguay on Saturday.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, when the transfer window opens, Liverpool are set to confirm the arrivals of Manchester City midfielder James Milner, Burnley striker Danny Ings, Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan as well as that of Clyne.</p>
<p>Yet despite the influx of players, including Charlton defender Joe Gomez, into Anfield, Rodgers is expected to spend less than a year ago when he shelled out on £110 million on eight players following the £75 million move of star striker Luis Suarez to Barcelona.</p>
<p>However, Liverpool, who had been runners-up in the previous campaign, could only finish sixth last season and so missed out on Champions League qualification.</p>

<p>HA NOI (Biz Hub) — International arrivals to Viet Nam declined for the 13th consecutive month in June, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).</p>
<p>It said the nation welcomed 529,000 international visitors last month, a month-on-month fall of 8.2 per cent and year-on-year fall of 1.9 per cent.</p>
<p>The office estimates a total of 3.8 million visitors in the first six months of the year, a year-on-year decline of 11.3 per cent.</p>

<td><strong>Thua Thien-Hue welcomes 1.6 million tourists</strong>
<p>Nearly 1.6 million tourists visited the central province of Thua Thien-Hue in the first six months of this year, up 1 per cent over the same period last year, including 572,000 international visitors.</p>
<p>The tourism sector earned VND1.4 trillion (US$67 million), a year-on-year increase of 2 percent.</p>
<p>The 2015 Hue Traditional Craft Festival, held during the national public holidays on April 30 and May 1, drew more than 100,000 visitors, up 22 percent from the previous year.</p>
<p>Director Phan Thanh Hai of the Hue Relics Preservation Centre said it has welcomed nearly 1.1 million visitors to date, half of them foreigners.</p>
<p>The centre organised the Golden Tourism Week programme on April 22-28 and June 15-21, as well as many other activities including music performances, “royal parties” and exhibitions.</p>
<p>The province has said it plans to improve its tourism infrastructure, including completing construction of the Dien Bien Phu road to serve tourism in the southwestern part of Hue imperial city – a UNESCO-recognised world heritage. It will also upgrade the Hue Relics Preservation Centre, the Revolution and History Museum and the Ho Chi Minh Museum.</p>
<p>The locality will also improve its connectivity by opening at least six direct flights between Hue and Bangkok, and organising promotions in Hong Kong (China), the Korea World Travel Fair (KOTFA) and the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) tourism expo. — VNS</p>

<p>The number of visitors from Europe has fallen by 14.7 per cent and from Asia by 10.6 per cent.</p>
<p>Australia has bucked the trend with a 1.6 per cent increase in the number of visitors.</p>
<p>The GSO said that international arrivals to Viet Nam have been much lower than other countries in the region in the recent years.</p>
<p>There were 7.8 million visitors to the country last year, while Malaysia received 27.4 million, Thailand, 24.8 million, Singapore, 15.1 million and Indonesia, 9.4 million.</p>
<p>A GSO report attributed the decline to several factors, including a failure to attract visitors for business and recreation, something that other countries have managed to do.</p>
<p>Relevant agencies have also not co-operated effectively in tourism management, it said.</p>
<p>The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (MERS-CoV) outbreak in South Korea and other Asian nations has resulted in a decrease in travel.</p>
<p>Apart from Germany, Italy, Spain and Finland, the number of visitors from key European markets decreased due to economic difficulties. The number of visitors from Russia was down 13 per cent.</p>
<p>A 2013 survey found 69 per cent of visitors said Viet Nam had beautiful scenery, but only 39 per cent said they were satisfied with the quality of service.</p>
<p>Many visitors also said Viet Nam offered less diversity in tourism products like souvenirs, but these were more costly than in other markets.</p>
<p>Solving the problem</p>
<p>Green tourism could help solve the problems that keep tourists from coming to Viet Nam – or from returning after their first visit. In this vein, participants at a workshop yesterday focusing on the development of green tourism in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta suggested the establishment of a steering committee to head the effort.</p>
<p>To do this, localities in the region have to establish better co-ordination mechanisms, speakers said.</p>
<p>The workshop, held in Can Tho City, was one of eight main activities under the Mekong Delta Green Tours Week that is being organised from June 26 to July 2.</p>
<p>Vuong Duy Bien, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, “I hope that following this workshop, green tours will be given a push along the lines of sustainable development, contributing to environmental protection and climate change adaptation.”</p>
<p>He said that in 2014, the Delta had welcomed over 1.8 million foreign tourists and more than 10 million domestic tourists, earning revenues of over VND 6.3 trillion (US$288 million) and providing jobs to over 2.2 million people.</p>
<p>However, sustainable development has become a critical problem for the region in the wake of severe environmental pollution, diminishing natural resources and climate change impacts, he said.</p>
<p>“Sustainable tourism development needs strong co-operation between tour companies and concerned agencies, particularly enterprises providing services like hotels and tourism sites” Bien said.</p>
<p>Participants noted that green tour development was a global trend with great growth potential in the Delta, which is criss-crossed with waterways, has high ecological value and cultural facets that are very attractive.</p>
<p>Given its natural advantages, green tours can promote socio-economic development in the region while protecting the environment and promoting climate change adaptation, they said.</p>
<p>They also mentioned challenges facing the development of green tours in the region, including low knowledge and awareness of green tours among its residents and policy shortcomings at the macro level. This has prevented strong linkages between agencies engaged in organising green tours in the region.</p>
<p>Tran Huu Hiep, director of the Department of Economic Affairs under the Southwestern Region Steering Committee, said better co-ordination was also needed between the Central and local governments.</p>
<p>Commenting on a proposal to develop special tourism products for the region, Hiep said three main areas of focus: co-ordination policy, resources generation and human resources development. — VNS</p>

<p>Hung and another cyclo driver each quickly took a US$50 note from the wallets of an Australian couple after dropping them with their two children at the Independence Palace last Thursday.</p>
<p>The couple gesticulated, asking for their money back, but Hung and his friend just smiled and rode away.</p>
<p>The Australian man said they had been brought from Ben Thanh Market, a kilometer away.</p>
<p>He said it was their first time in Vietnam and so did not know prices or directions.</p>
<p>“We feel unhappy because they took a lot of money,” he told a Tuoi Tre reporter.</p>
<p>An investigation by Tuoi Tre found Hung is one of 10 freelance cyclo drivers stationed around Ben Thanh Market. They charge foreign tourists exorbitant prices, usually 10 times what is agreed in advance.</p>
<p>They would grab money straight from customers’ pockets if the latter are reluctant to pay.</p>
<p>Last Tuesday Hung allegedly snatched $200 from another Australian tourist after driving 1.2 kilometers from Ben Thanh.</p>
<p>The woman said he had agreed to take $20.</p>
<p>“I was shocked and angry,” she said.</p>
<p>Sometimes the rip-off is accompanied by violence.</p>
<p>That happened last Wednesday when Minh, a driver in the same group, took Chang Lee, a 28-year-old Taiwanese, from Ben Thanh to Tran Hung Dao Street in District 1.</p>
<p>Minh called a colleague named Long to wait for him there.</p>
<p>When he arrived, he announced a huge fare and quickly took some notes from the customer’s bag.</p>
<p>They quarreled and Lee grabbed Minh’s arm to drag him to a police station.</p>
<p>Long showed up and rescued his friend and they both left.</p>
<p>Lee said Minh had agreed to take VND150,000, but took VND1 million.</p>
<p>On another occasion, four tourists from New Zealand were in four cyclos from the group.</p>
<p>When they stopped at a café to pay money, Long and Minh named a number and the tourists refused. They argued and the drivers snatched VND100,000 notes from the tourists, screaming “More, more.”</p>
<p>They only left after one of the male visitors was furious and slammed a table.</p>
<p>The tourists said VND6 million, or around $300, had been taken.</p>
<p>“We found the cyclo interesting and we wanted to try them; we did not expect that to happen,” one of them said.</p>
<p>A woman in the group said the drivers had been very friendly at first, telling them about popular places in the city and showing them where to shop.</p>
<p>A local man living on Tran Hung Dao Street said he sees the cyclo drivers arguing with tourists every day.</p>
<p>When some female tourists said they did not have enough cash, the drivers would escort them to a nearby ATM to withdraw money, he said.</p>
<p>A representative of District 1 Cyclo Association said their members sign an agreement to charge tourists only VND50,000, around $2.5, an hour and wear uniforms.</p>
<p>But he also said they only serve clients of travel agencies. So tourists traveling on their own end up with thugs like Hung and his gang.</p>
<p>A police officer said the District 1 police have photos of several drivers notorious for cheating customers in the area, and so victims can go to any police station to report.</p>
<p>It is not clear if the tourists have been given their money back.</p>
<p>One day after Tuoi Tre published the story, it cited a city official as saying that local authorities will look into the issue and deal with violations strictly.</p>

Da Nang among top 8 most colourful cities in the world
<p><em>SkyScanner, the world’s travel search engine, has cited Vietnam’s central Da Nang city among top 8 most colourful cities in the world.</em></p>
<p>According to the website, Da Nang’s claim to colourful fame is the fire-breathing dragon bridge over the Han River.</p>
<p>Each night at around 9pm, a spectacular light show of dragons spurting fire and water with LED lights illuminating its body begs to be seen.</p>
<p>“It’s all part of a grand plan to enliven the city, so we’ll be expecting even more exciting and colourful light-ups in future”, says SkyScanner.</p>
<p>Among top 8 most colourful cities in the world are Jodhpur and Jaipur of India, Pattaya of Thailand, Guilin of China, Arashiyama of Japan, Brighton of Australia, and i-City of Malaysia.</p>

European tourists cancelling Tunisia vacations after massacre

<p>PARIS: Thousands of European tourists are cancelling planned vacations to Tunisia in the wake of last week’s massacre at a beach resort by a gunman whose attack was claimed by the Islamic State group.</p>
<p>Tour operators said on Monday (Jun 29) that many clients were scrapping plans entirely or asking to go to other, safer destinations. Some of the travel companies had taken the initiative themselves to suspend travel to Tunisia.</p>
<p>The trend began on Saturday, the day after 38 people – most of them British tourists – were killed at the Riu Imperial Marhaba hotel resort by the Tunisian gunman, who was then shot dead by police.</p>
<p>The cancellations have grown since as perception spread of Tunisia as a risky holiday spot targeted by anti-Western jihadists. In March, the North African country suffered an attack at a museum in its capital that killed 21 tourists.</p>
<p>TUI, the German group that is the biggest leisure and tourism company in the world, said Monday it had received 500 requests for “changed reservations” since the weekend. It declined to say how many Tunisia reservations it had been handling.</p>
<p>Germany’s number two tourism company Der Touristik said the latest attack had caused around half of its customers who were meant to have left on the weekend to stay at home.</p>
<p>A spokeswoman said the company had taken “several thousand reservations” for Tunisia for the peak vacation months of July and August, and that as of Monday there were 400 cancellations or changes for other destinations.</p>
<p>Demand had slowly bounced back after the March attack in Tunis, “but has now again been reduced to nothing,” she said.</p>
<p>In France, the head of the SNAV national association of travel agents, Jean-Pierre Mas, told AFP that, of around 10,000 vacation packages reserved for Tunisia for July, 80 per cent were cancelled or modified.</p>
<p>Rene-Marc Chikli, of the French tour operator association SETO, said between a quarter and half of the 50,000 reservations had been changed. He said “the worst effect” was on the last-minute bookings that would normally have filled spare capacity. “All the last-minute market is sunk,” he said.</p>
<p>In Belgium, “more than 15,000″ customers were affected by the decision by the travel company Neckermann – a subsidiary of Thomas Cook – to cancel Tunisia packages until the end of August in line with a foreign ministry warning.</p>
<p>Jetair, another Belgian company, has also suspended Tunisia trips until the end of July, a spokeswoman said.</p>
<p>In Britain, which was reeling from the number of citizens killed last week, no figures were available on Monday on the number of cancelled vacation trips. A spokesman for the Association of British Travel Agents said however there had been a “clear impact” on Britons who had been planning vacations in Tunisia.</p>
