Some sources said 16 died of the accident.

Victims who survived the accident and other witnesses confirmed that many workers fled the site before it collapsed, adding that they were forced to return to work by a South Korean manager.

The accident happened at a construction site of the Taiwanese-invested Formosa industrial park in the central Ha Tinh Province.

Worker Nguyen Van Hanh, 24, from the central Quang Binh Province, survived the accident but was still under health care at Ky Anh Hospital in Ha Tinh, recalled that, “I was working at the site then and felt the scaffold under my feet sink down twice and shake.

“Someone was shouting to alert the scaffold was about to collapse and all fled the scene.

“Ten minutes later, a South Korean manager asked workers to return and reassured them that it was all safe.

“Workers returned and several minutes later, the entire scaffold weighing hundreds of tons fell down with a crash.”

Another worker Nguyen Van Linh, 23, from Ky Anh District, Ha Tinh, agreed with the above details.

The accident happened at around 9:00pm on Wednesday.

Around 700 rescuers were present at the scene the entire yesterday night to search for victims stuck in the rubble.

The 25m tall scaffold is about 40m in length and 30m in width.

The investor has yet confirmed the exact number of workers present at the scaffolding collapse.

A brief report by the Department of Health of Ha Tinh confirmed that a total of 61 people were injured but many left the scene on their own.
