Conference shapes orientations to develop tourism into spearhead economic sector

At the conference, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien briefed the participants on the major targets set under the project, including attaining an average annual growth rate of 14-15% in the 2015-2020 period and contributing 9-10% to the country’s GDP.

The sector also strives to welcome 14-15 million foreign arrivals, earn revenues between US$29 billion and US$32.5 billion, and generate 3.5 million jobs by 2020.

To realise the tasks, the sector is required to enhance its promotion activities, improve conditions regarding visa procedures for visitors, strengthen domestic and international transport connectivity, and improve the professionalism of those working in the field.

The project also maps out other solutions including boosting inter-sectoral and inter-regional co-operation, creating a friendly environment for holidaymakers, diversify tourism products, and increasing the participation of localities in deploying tourism activities.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy PM Vuong Dinh Hue highly valued efforts of the project’s compilation board and contributed his opinions on the plan.

Accordingly, he asked for clarification on the current shortcomings of the hospitality sector, such as the lack of authentic and indigenous tourist products for each locality and region, and the weak co-ordination among localities and regions in developing tourism.

He also noted that localities should consider their practical conditions in devising their own tourism development plans.

Meanwhile, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam requested ministries and sectors to review the current legal act regarding tourism activities in order to facilitate the project’s implantation.

Delegates at the conference also suggested ideas to supplement the project’s contents, such as how relevant ministries, sectors, localities, businesses and residents contribute to the robust and sustainable development of tourism sector.
