After days of investigation, police in the central province of Nghe An said on Sunday that they had detained Nguyen Thi Ha, 22, a local woman, on suspicion of stealing property.

Ha is a drug addict and has a previous conviction of appropriating property through swindling, police said.

The investigation was launched after Mark Beaumont Dutch, 52, an Australian national who is head of the technical department at the Nghi Son Oil Refinery Plant in the central province of Thanh Hoa, reported he lost an iPhone 5 and 5s and a Zippo lighter at the Thai Binh Duong Hotel in Nghe An’s Cua Lo town.

On January evening, after a working trip to Nghe An’s Vinh City, Dutch stayed at the hotel and asked it for a massage service in his room, he said in his report.

At 12:20 am on January 11, a young masseuse arrived and gave him a massage. He fell asleep after leaving the phones and the Zippo lighter at the end of the massage bed.

When Dutch awoke around 5 am that morning, the masseuse had disappeared, along with his two cell phones and the lighter, the Phap Luat Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh (Ho Chi Minh City Law) newspaper quoted him as saying.

There are a lot of important materials stored in the iPhones, Dutch said in the report.

As he did not remember what the masseuse looked like, police had a hard time identifying her.

However, after several days of screening all masseuses at the hotel, police focused their suspicions on Ha and decided to detain her for questioning on January 18.

Upon searching Ha’s rented room in Dien Chau District, police found an iPhone 5 and 5s and paraphernalia related to methamphetamine use.

Ha later admitted that she had stolen the phones from the Australian man while he was sleeping during the massage session.

Ha dropped out of school when she finished fifth grade. She then made a living as a sex worker, and in 2011, was sentenced by the Hanoi People’s Court to 10 months in prison on charges of appropriating property through swindling.
