A police officer in southern Vietnam has been suspended for firing plastic bullets at a group of teenagers with no justification, causing one to be hospitalized last week.

Phan Van Vi from the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang admitted that he had been drinking before the incident.

According to local media, Nguyen Van Nhan, 17, and his friends were talking on a bridge around 11 pm on January 15 when Vi and two other officers under his supervision approached them.

As the teenagers quickly split up, Vi fired some warning shots with plastic bullets, but one of the shots directly hit Nhan on his back.

Nhan was taken to the police station for questioning, only to be released the next morning.

He was then rushed to a local hospital and treated for the bruises.

Vi was suspended after Nhan’s family filed a complaint to police.

Local authorities are considering further disciplinary measures.
