A food stall in Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport has been closed for selling a bowl of veggie instant noodles at an extortive price of VND100,000 (US$4.7).
Tre Viet Company, which owns the Bamboo Café & Fastfood at the airport’s international terminal, was also fined VND8 million because it did not list the price on its menu, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
Earlier, an anonymous passenger forced to pay the high price on December 31 reportedly sent a complaining text message to Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang, who then instructed the Northern Airports Authority to look into the case.
It is unknown how the passenger managed to contact the minister directly.
According to the Airports Authority, a Tre Viet representative said that the stall was not officially opening that day, but an employee deliberately sold the plain noodle, which was also not on the menu, to some customers for high prices.
Food sold at unreasonably high prices have been reported at Vietnam’s airports over the past few years, prompting relevant agencies to stipulate maximum prices for food stalls operating at airports.
For instance, Noi Bai airport in 2013 set the maximum price of a 500-ml water bottle at VND15,000 at public places, VND20,000 at domestic waiting areas, and $2 at international waiting areas.
A bowl of instant noodles has to be sold for no more than VND20,000 at the airport’s domestic terminal and $3 at the international terminal.
