ADB finances to improvie education, infrastructure in most disadvantaged areas

In Hanoi, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Vietnam January 23 signed two loan agreements totaling US$165 million for improving lower secondary education of ethnic minorities in the Vietnam’s poorest regions, and for additional financing to scale up investments in rural infrastructure in the six selected provinces in the Central Region.

The first US$80 million loan agreement signed is for the Second Lower Secondary Education for the Most Disadvantaged Areas Project, a continuation of the Lower Secondary Education for the Most Disadvantaged Regions.

The project aims to improve the net enrolment rate of lower secondary education in the target areas by 5% toward 2020 through the construction of 660 more classrooms, 350 semi-boarding facilities, around 250 teacher housing, training of some 24,000 teachers, as well as development of about 344 new school clusters.

The second loan of $85 million targeted critical rural infrastructure in 13 provinces in the Central provinces of Binh Dinh, Binh Thuan, Ha Tinh, Ninh Thuan, Phu Yen and Thua Thien-Hue, including rural roads, irrigation drainage and flood control systems, rural markets, domestic water supply schemes and coastal works.
