Vietnam firm coats Galaxy Note 4 with 24k gold

Shortly after the much anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 4 officially hit shelves in Vietnam last week, a company offering gold plating services unveiled yet a far more appealing product to diehard fans of the world’s leading smartphone maker: the 24k gold Galaxy Note 4.

The Galaxy Note 4 was released in the Southeast Asian country on October 24, and Ho Chi Minh City-based Golden Ace Vietnam Co. Ltd. wowed local Samsung aficionados just a day later with its gold plated device.

Every piece of metal, from the rim surrounding the handset to the power and volume buttons, of the phablet was handcrafted to bear a gold coat under a process that took four to five hours, according to newswire Dan Tri.

It is arguably the first Samsung handset to be coated with gold as other devices by the South Korean electronics titan, even those in the high-end segments like Galaxy S and Galaxy Note, have plastic – rather than metal – bodies.

On the left side of the handset is the “24k Gold Edition” text, while the “Distributed by Golden Mobile” line is put on the right. Both lines of text are inscribed by laser.

The heart rate sensor and the edge around the backside camera are also covered in gold. But several parts, including the home button – incorporated with the fingerprint sensor – the Samsung logo on the backside, and the S Pen, cannot wear the golden coat.

Golden Mobile, the distribution chain of Golden Ace Vietnam, is selling the golden Galaxy Note 4 at VND42.4 million (roughly US$2,000), with the gold plating service costing around $1,100, according to local tech website ICTNews.

The Galaxy Note 4 fetched VND17.9 million ($843) on its release day, according to news website Zing News.

The Galaxy Note phablet features a crisper, 5.7-inch display, and comes with a fantastic 16-megapixel OIS camera, whereas the S Pen has its own array of powerful features like Air Command and S-Note.

Samsung announced on Thursday its third-quarter operating profit fell by an annual 60.1 percent to 4.1 trillion won ($3.9 billion), matching its guidance issued earlier this month, according to Reuters.
