VietNamNet Bridge – As local consumers express their worries over the quality of imported apples and pears, particularly Chinese products, the Ministry of Agriculture has decided to implement all possible measures to monitor the quality of these fruits.
For fruits imported from China, the Ministry on Wednesday asked relevant bodies to strictly supervise the import procedures under international practices.
The Ministry said that there are thousands of fruit preservatives but for a kind of fruit, only a certain preservatives are used. Therefore, according to Minister Cao Duc Phat, relevant bodies should conduct the risk assessment procedure. Prior to allowing imports into Vietnam, agencies of the two countries must reach an agreement on the production process, storage of fruits and have the commitment to mutual recognition of supervision of the both sides.
When fruits are imported into Vietnam, the relevant agencies have to conduct supervision on the basis of analyzing the commonly used preservatives for those kinds of fruits.
Earlier, the head of the Plant Protection Department – Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hong – offered an answer for consumers’ concern that why imported apples and pears are not rotten after many months that the preservation of fruit depends on many factors such as breed and species; therefore, users should not jump to conclusions that fruits are preserved by harmful preservatives to be fresh for a long time.
Hong’s answer was not supported by the public.
