An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Project RENEW safely removed an artillery shell from a kindergarten in the north-central province of Quang Tri on Wednesday.
Nguyen Thi Hong, the headmistress of the Cam Thanh ward nursery in Cam Lo district called RENEW right after she found the 100-millimeter shell on school grounds, on Tuesday.
The shell was only 10 meters away from a class room, Hong said, adding that her nursery is attended by 150 toddlers in Cam Thanh ward.
“It is a 100mm artillery shell which had been here for years,” the EOD team leader Le Xuan Tung said. “Torrential rains in the past few days exposed it,” he explained, “and we have now removed it to our central demolition site for safe destruction.”
It is not uncommon to find unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Quang Tri Province. From the beginning of this year, Project RENEW received 346 reports of UXO discoveries through the Community Reporting Network, resulting in 565 items of UXO being safely destroyed.
