REACH wins Project Inspire 2014 in Singapore

(VOV) -An inspiring project changing the lives of disadvantaged Vietnamese women entitled REACH was selected to receive a US$25,000 grant to continue its mission to help young people from under-privileged backgrounds.


The project was selected out of a total of 500 entries from a record 70 countries around the globe, at the final round of “Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World” contest in Singapore on August 30.


The competition was co-organised by the Singapore Committee for UN Women and MasterCard.

Georgette Tan, MasterCard Group Head of Communications in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa, said she was impressed with REACH’s novel idea of ​​changing the lives young people from under-privileged backgrounds.


The project transforms the lives of disadvantaged women in Vietnam by providing them with a range of training skills. Once trained, it also assists the women with job placement, provides follow-up support, and empowers them to stand on their own feet, she added.


Mai, a REACH representative, said the team implemented a similar project in 2008 and 80% of trained disadvantaged women located jobs within 6 months of graduating.


The grant will help expand REACH’s activities, supporting more than 50 disadvantaged youth, she noted.


Launched in 2011, “Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World” presents 18-35 year olds a 5-minute platform to pitch their inspired idea to the world to win a US$25,000 grant in support of their work to empower women and girls.
