Police in the southern Vietnamese province of Tay Ninh that borders Cambodia are investigating a case in which two Chinese men were caught illegally transporting a large amount of Vietnamese dong (VND) from Vietnam to Cambodia via the border.
T. Z., 45, with Chinese nationality, was arrested in Tan Bien District on August 29 when local police, in conjunction with customs officers and border guards, examined his car at the Xa Mat border gate.
Police opened three suitcases and a carton they found inside the car, and discovered they contained Vietnamese banknotes of VND50,000, VND100,000, and VND200,000 denominations.
The cash amounted to VND18.2 billion (US$860,000).
Z. failed to show any documents related to the cash, saying that another Chinese, L. W., had hired him to transport it through the border.
On searching the man’s body, police also found and seized $1,030 and VND12.5 million ($590) in cash and four mobile phones.
Z. said that W. was waiting to receive all the money on the other side of the border gate in Cambodia.
After waiting for long, W. crossed the border into Vietnam to look for Z. and police captured him immediately.
Police officers are questioning the detainees about the origin of the money and the purpose of transporting it from Vietnam into Cambodia.
