On March 12, in Hanoi, Central Hydrometeorological Prediction Center coordinated agency for Japanese Space Exploiting (JAXA) to hold a workshop on the results of the project for “Application of remote sensing technology in forecasting, warning and monitoring floods.” Photo illustration (Photo: Quoc Viet/vietnamplus) The project was implemented from April, 2011- March, 2014 to support the Government of Vietnam, Bangladesh and the Philippines to improve the monitoring and warning system at the risk management caused by flooding with reasonable costs; practical experiences through the application of space-based technologies (SBT); information technology and communication. The countries of Asia and the Pacific, non-structural measures have been using and those are considered as an effective method of monitoring and warning floods on river basin, help mitigate the loss of people and properties. According to estimation of the Agency for Disaster Management in Asia under the World Meteorological Organization, Vietnam is one of the most disaster-prone countries in Asia. Coastline is 3,260km long, annually Vietnam often gets natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, flash floods, heavy rains, droughts, landslides, storms, whirlwinds etc. In which storm floods are disasters caused more damages.
