The Hanoitimes – The Con Son – Kiep Bac Autumn Festival will take place at the Con Son – Kiep Bac relic site in Hai Duong Province from September 8-13.
The annual event aims to commemorate the national hero Tran Hung Dao, who made great contributions in the fight against Yuan-Mongol invaders from the north in the 13 th century.
An array of traditional rituals will also be organised such as a seal opening ceremony at Kiep Bac temple; a ceremony praying for peace; a ritual procession, and a commemoration of the hero in Mam Xoi mount.
This year, the festival features a wide range of cultural and sporting activities such as incense offering rituals, a Chung cake (square glutinous rice cake) and Day cake (round glutinous rice cake) making contest, water puppetry, wrestling, and boat races.
Con Son – Kiep Bac is the site of a defence line built at the end of the 13th century to protect the Thang Long Imperial Citadel. It witnessed important battles between the Tran dynasty (1226 – 1400) army and the Yuan-Mongol invaders.
Covering an area of more than 8 hectares in Chi Linh Town, the Con Son-Kiep Bac historical site is closely associated with the lives and careers of Tran Hung Dao and writer Nguyen Trai (1380-1442), who was recognised as a Great Man of Culture of the World.
Con Son-Kiep Bac was recognised as a national heritage in 1962 and a special national heritage in 2012.
Last year, the Con Son-Kiep Bac spring and autumn festivals received national intangible cultural heritage status, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
