Two men coming from Nigeria, isolated at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City due to high fever, were discharged on Wednesday after doctors confirmed they are now free from the deadly Ebola virus, according to Vietnamese health authorities.

The HCMC Tropical Diseases Hospital yesterday evening released the two foreigners after monitoring them for a day for signs of the fatal virus that has killed 1,350 people in four West African countries, including Liberia, Nigeria, Guinea and Sierra Leone, Tran Dac Phu, head of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health’s Preventive Health Department said the same day.
The two Nigerians, 34 and 32 years old, had been found running a fever at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and were taken to the hospital, Phu said.
They were given tests and other medical examinations, and the results showed that they had not contracted any infectious diseases including Ebola, Phu said.
The two foreigners no longer had a fever when they were discharged but they have been required to self-monitor their health until the end of the 21st day from August 18, when they left Nigeria, the official said.
The ensuing monitoring is necessary as Ebola virus disease (EVD) has an incubation period of two to 21 days.
Before the two Nigerians, 33 other Nigerians had arrived in Vietnam by air but no health problems were found, said Dr. Nguyen Van Sau, director of the HCMC International Health Quarantine Center.
Vietnamese hospitalized after returning from Liberia
Meanwhile, a source has told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that a Vietnamese person who had returned home from Liberia was taken to the same hospital on Wednesday evening after having a fever and cough.
This person arrived in Tan Son Nhat airport a couple of days earlier, the source said.
As having stayed in the Ebola-hit area, the patient actively came to the hospital and preferred to be isolated for treatment and care, the source said.
As of Wednesday, the EVD affected at least 2,473 people in West Africa and killed 1,350, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the same day.
As a severe acute viral illness, the EVD is often characterized by the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, according to the WHO.
No Ebola infection has been found in Vietnam so far and local competent agencies are taking all necessary measures to prevent a penetration of the deadly virus, which may be brought in by visitors coming from the epidemic areas.
