(VOV) – Striker Tuan Tai on August 9 scored two goals, helping U19 Vietnam outplay U21 Singapore 4-0 in their opening game at the U22 Southeast Asian football tournament taking place in Brunei.

Vietnamese players looked very comfortable at the start of the game, realising coach Guillaume Graechen’s tactics and pressing their rivals into their home turf.

Captain Cong Phuong missed the first chance to open the scoring for Vietnam on 10 minutes from a free kick, when the ball travelled past the horizontal bar.

Four minutes later, Xuan Truong was awarded another free kick in front of the Singaporean goalie, but the ball went wide past the vertical wooden bar.

On 17 minutes, Xuan Truong set up a ball for Tuan Tai, who then hammered in, giving Vietnam the lead.

After the goal, Vietnamese players still kept the game under their control, turning down Singapore’s chance to produce any counterattacks.

Five minutes after the interval, Tuan Tai again, who is said to succeed his veteran Van Quyen at Song Lam Nghe An FC, extended Vietnam’s lead from a superb kick.

Captain Cong Phuong failed to slot in from Tuan Tai’s pass on 56 minutes, but he did not miss a chance after Vietnam was awarded a penalty kick two minutes later.

Substitute Van Toan scored the fourth goal for Vietnam when the game had 7 minutes to go.

At this year’s Hassanal Bolkiah Cup, Vietnam were pooled in Group B together with Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, and hosts Brunei.

Vietnam will take on Malaysia on August 11, Indonesia on August 13, Brunei on August 16 and Cambodia on August 18.
