More than 100 police officers in the northern province of Bac Ninh on Wednesday swooped on two local companies doubling as underground criminal gangs and arrested nine people, including two men who are their directors.
Nguyen Ngoc Minh, director of Dai An Co. Ltd., and Nguyen Thanh Hung, director of Thanh Hung Bac Ninh Co. Ltd. (a Dai An subsidiary) were arrested along with their seven accomplices when police rushed to their companies on August 13 night, police said.
The arrests of the nine people, all of whom are Bac Ninh residents, were made after a long time of investigation, police said.
On searching the two companies, police seized six guns and a grenade, and a lot of materials related to criminal offenses committed by the gang.
The nine detainees have been initially charged with “extortion of property” pursuant to Article 135 of the Penal Code, a senior police officer told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
Under the cover of “business operations,” they committed many illegal acts and became a major criminal group in the province, the officer said.
Police are collecting evidence to further charge them with other offenses, including smuggling, illegally storing weapons, and even drug trafficking, the officer added.
Major General Nguyen Anh Tuan, head of the Central Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, said that a dozen local forest rangers were mobilized to the scene to check and confiscate a large volume of wood stashed in the warehouses of the two firms.
Dai An was established in 2000, operating in the fields of high-class art woodwork, real estate, and construction, police said.
This company has been awarded many certificates of merit by the provincial taxman, along with other state-level certificates of merit.
It has been recognized by the provincial People’s Committee as “an outstanding labor collective” for a long time, police said.
The firm was also given a certificate of merit as a typical business during the celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi in 2010, they added.
