Sixty Zitherists perform in HCMC

More than 60 zitherists at home and abroad joined in a concert t at Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music that is part of dan tranh (sixteen-string zither) art program 2014 to take place in the city from June 30-July 4.

The list of participants includes students and teachers of the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, the Tieng hat que huong (Voice of homeland) club, the Duyet Thi Trang quarter, and folk music groups in the US and France such as VAV Tranhsemble, Huong Viet, Phuong Ca.

Famous artists namely Huynh Khai, Hai Phuong, Vo Van Anh, Thu Hien, Bich Lan Lannie, Thuong Huyen, Chau Minh Tam, Uyen Tram and Thanh Thuy will also take part in the event.

A seminar on preserving and developing dan tranh

The Vietnamese zither (dan tranh) is also known as Dan Thap Luc or sixteen-stringed zither. It has a trapezium-shape, 110-120 cm in length. The large end is 25-30 cm in width with holes and to hang the strings. The narrow is 15-20 cm in width with 16 tuning keys on the surface of the instrument. The strings are made of silk or then copper and now steel. Players use all fingers with plectrums on the thumb. The music of the dan tranh is usually bright and full of cheerfulness. The instrument is often performed solo or in concert, to accompany poem chanting, singing, performances of traditional orchestra. (internet)
