VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnam Civil Aviation Administration (CAAV) has decided to establish a special team to monitor flights of domestic air carriers to deal with the delays and cancellations of flights.

The team, led by Vo Huy Cuong – CAAV Deputy Director – will also check the supply of non-aviation services at the three largest airports: Noi Bai in Hanoi, Da Nang in Da Nang city, and Tan Son Nhat in HCM City from July 13 to 20.

According to CAAV General Director Lai Xuan Thanh, in the first half of this year, the rate of delayed and canceled flights of the national carrier Vietnam Airlines was 12 percent and over 40 percent for the budget airways Vietjet Air and Jetstar Pacific.

The situation and the occurrence of many incidents on safety and aviation security have eroded public confidence in the quality of air transport services in Vietnam.

The CAAV has directed port authorities to strengthen inspection and supervision of preparations before the flight, passenger services at the airport, airport facilities, obligations of the carrier for passengers in case of flight delay and cancellation.

From July 13, the port authorities will have to issue daily reports on the delay and cancellation of flights and the causes. They are also required to provide passengers with information on their hotlines so that the passengers can send complaints or requests related to air carriers.

Earlier, at a meeting on July 11, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang said that the delay and cancellation of flights is very serious and it was occurring at all airlines. He pointed out that the root cause was due not to a lack of aircraft but to a lack of passengers, as air carriers combine passengers of two flights into one..

The Minister also criticized the CAAV for its management, which has led to the high rate of delayed and canceled flights and unhealthy competition among airlines.

Thang proposed to amend the aviation law towards imposing sanctions on airlines that have high rates of delayed and canceled flights, including revoking their business licence.
