HA NOI (VNS) – Nguyen Tien Minh retained his title at the Yonex Suffolk County Community College US Open Championships yesterday in New York, beating Tien Chen Chou of Chinese Taipei.
Top seed Minh defeated the No 2 seed 21-19, 14-21, 21-19, in a hard fought singles title clash.
It is for the second consecutive year that a Vietnamese has won the men singles title at the US Open badminton championship.
The women’s final saw No 3 seed Beiwen Zhang of the hosts beating Japanese Kana Ito 21-8, 21-17.
Muhammad Rijal and Vita Marissa from Indonesia took the mixed doubles crown with a 21-16, 21-19 win over Thai duo Maneepong Jongjit and Sapsiree Taerattanachai who were top seeds here.
Indonesia pocketed their second title after Shendy Puspa Irawati and Vita Marissa trounced No 3 pair Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai from Thailand, 21-15, 21-10, in the women’s doubles.
The Thais also secured the men’s doubles gold medal as Maneepong Jongjit and Nipitphon Puangpuapech, No 2 seed, defeated No 1 Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark 21-17, 15-21, 21-18.
The world leading players have now flown to Chinese Taipei to compete in the Yonex Open Chinese Taipei which starts tomorrow.
The world No 17 Minh is seeded No 4. The silver medallist will play Malaysian Kok Hong Woon in the first round. The two have never played each other before.
His female teammate Vu Thi Trang will face Ksenia Polikarpova of Russia in the first round.
The Taipei Open will offer US$200,000 to the winners. The finals are being played on Sunday. – VNS
