HA NOI (VNS) — International Grandmaster Le Quang Liem’s ranking fell from the top 10 to the 19th place in the rapid discipline at the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2014 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, yesterday.



The HCM City-born player gained nine points after 15 matches.


In the third day of competition, Liem, who has an Elo rating of 2724, won three more points. He had beaten Guseinov Gadir of Azerbaijan (Elo 2613), Luka Lenic of Slovenia (Elo 2659), and Jobava Baadur of Georgia (Elo 2713). However, Liem lost to Curuana Fabiaano of Italy (Elo 2791) and Etienne Bacrot of France (Elo 2720).


Meanwhile, Liem’s teammate Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son also had nine points after 15 matches, but he was ranked 15th because of a different auxiliary index.


In the same discipline at the event last year, Liem was ranked fourth and Son was in the 16th place.


Today, players will compete in the rapid event. Liem is the defending world champion in this category, while Son’s ranking was sixth in the last season. — VNS
